L-shape ranch needs front window ideas
Comments (4)Hi Homebound, your home is similar to a relative's home in Michigan. I am no expert, just a homeowner having some time to browse this morning. A patio over the enclave would look nice especially if it can have an A-shape roof with exposed beams and extends at an angle not parallel to either side of the L shape walls. Level the entire enclave step with stones or stamped concrete with steps leading up to it. It would make an inviting entry. With flowers and landscaping on both side and a winding path leading to it, add lighting, whewww! A larger bedroom window would be nice, better proportion to the wall. Some sort of frame color (other than white) that you like or something that matches the house color would be nice. Forest green? Add a nice long flower boxes under or better yet, add a planted bed of flowers along the wall and it is curb appeal galore! May be nice to spruce up the wall with good quality black coach lamps of some sort, it makes for nice lighting at night and nice visual appeal in the day. Sorry, I am just day dreaming :-). Have fun fixing it all up!...See MoreHelp! One story ranch exterior design dilemma.
Comments (21)rustic relating to the countryside; rural. made in a plain and simple fashion. If you don't like cedar shingles that turn gray with age then you shouldn't list "rustic" a goal. Painted clapboards and thin stone skirts aren't rustic. Nothing could look more rustic than cedar shakes that are hand split and have a very thick bottom edge and a stone foundation should stop at the bottom of the floor framing like a foundation normally does. What you have drawn looks decidedly suburban and developer-ish. The best finish for shakes is to have them factory dipped in a stain of any color you like but I wouldn't choose one as dark as the windows nor mix them with other claddings....See MoreRemodel Front Exterior- L Shaped Home
Comments (11)We want to have an open mind about budget and what to change. I think we'd like to get some ideas and make decisions from there, but probably no more than $5,000...less would be better....See MoreWhat would you do to make the exterior not look like such an L shape?
Comments (30)Sorry about the new paint but when the goal is to deemphasize, dark is never good. The L shape is the garage. If you want to play down the garage and up play the HOUSE then the garage door needs to fade not POP. Same with the shutters on the garage. That is quite a substantial window meant to give the illusion of home vs garage..is it safe? If those bushes grow up it would be a perfect place for a criminal to hide/break the window..... I do think adding a front porch/pergola gives the home a friendly feel. Still then you are all sitting in the driveway given your home configuration and that's not always a favorite place....See MoreJulie Nelson
