I broke my freakin' toe today - stubbed it badly on the dryer. It's gotten worse, very swollen and a lovely shade of purple. Not sure how I'm going to get a shoe on tomorrow.

My mom died in 2003, so I can't call her and get "My poor baby!", nor can I get any "Poor baby, let me come over and cook you something good." And she won't call me in the morning and say "How is my poor baby doing?"

So if any of you moms and stepmoms can send a little "poor baby" my way, I'd appreciate it :)

I really miss my mom.

Oh, that's horrible! Both things - I'd just sink w/o my mother. I once had a friend lose her mom and say, "There's no one to call now when we get back from a trip just to say that we're OK." My mom is my best friend - an amazing person.

Ironically, my mom has broken her toe a few times, but the little one. She's not a complainer, but boy did that smart. I'm so sorry you're going through this. I can only advise, sandals, flip-flops or barefeet.

Sending some sympathy your way on all counts...

We were in the process of going for full custody. His 12 year old is actually the better behaved of the two youngest sons. His 10 year old has ODD and doesn't come to our house anymore because he doesn't want to and his mother doesn't make him. If DH goes to get him it's kicking and screaming and punching and the police will get called. We had SS10 in therapy for 8 months starting in January of last year. It took us 8 months to get him somewhat managable. I went into the hospital at the end of august to have our baby and we found out after he was born that he had 3 congenital heart defects. We stayed in the hospital with him for a month while he had open heart surgery. When we got back home, all the progress we had made with SS10 had gone out the window because of his mother. We couldn't afford to keep paying the lawyer to fight for full custody so DH just lets SS10 stay with his mom. SS12 doesn't give us any trouble at all to come over. He enjoys playing with my children and they get along for the most part. We were also told by SS10's previous psychiatrist that he was not to be left alone with the baby for ANY period of time because of his violent tendencies. The story goes deeper than this and our lawyer is pretty sure CPS will eventually get called and they will be taken away from her and will come to live with us. BM recently changed SS10 to a different psychiatrist than what we were bringing him to and I'm sure her story was "his dad doesn't want anything to do with him" which was her story for his other doctors until we started getting in touch with all of them and explaining what this woman is about and that's when they realized that they weren't being able to treat him correctly because they didn't have the right information on why he was acting out like this. We have recently gotten in touch with the new psychiatrist and got them a copy of the full psych evaluation that we had done on SS10 so they should be calling back soon to get any other info they may need from DH.

After reading all of the above posts I just have to wonder...what must it be like for THESE CHILDREN to have to ask their stepparent if they can call them mom or dad? What is it like for THESE CHILDREN to be introduced as step or half or my husband's/wife's kid? I am quite certain of one thing-it is so dang hard to be a kid these days. It is so dang hard to try to fit in at school, in sports, let alone two different households. How must they feel? How alone or how confused? Why not just do what makes them comfortable? I personally have no experience with stepparents. My own parents have been married for 32 years. However, my mom has experience with every type of HORRIBLE stepparent that has ever lived. Her stepmother used to make HER daughters peanut butter and jelly and made my mom and her sisters freakish cheap lunchmeat sandwhiches. She burned all the baby pictures of my mom an her sisters and did absolutely unspeakable things I won't even mention. And do you know what she told me when I started dating a man with kids? She said, "I never wanted to be a stepmom because of my experiences as a kid. But I made a decision very early on that if I were ever to become a stepmom, I was going to be the best damn one that ever lived!" So here I am, and I'm going to be the best damn stepmom that ever lived. And if my stepkids are more comfortable being introduced as 'my kids' or if the day comes when they want to call me mom, or whatever have you, I'm going to do my best to make them feel good. BECAUSE IT'S NOT ABOUT ME!!! IT'S ABOUT THESE PRECIOUS CHILDREN!!! And I love them!

I am a stepmom to a beautiful 7 year old little girl and have been since she was 4 years old. I can literally count on my ten fingers the amount of times her biological mom has made visits since I have known her (more like on one hand). She moved out of state with her when she was four and kept her from my husband for almost a year until he took her to court about three times u tip he finally won sole custody of her and her was granted child support from bio mom. He was also to drive half way from New Mexico to Dallas Texas to have our little girl do OVER NIGHT visits once a month in Texas and two week visits over summer break. Like I said bio mom would constantly cancel visits saying she could not afford it even though we received absolutely no child support checks and when she did make visits she would often request for us to pick up the child early because she had plans with her boyfriend or she would state the child was out of control and she could not handle her. The last visit she had with my step daughter she kept her for a month and it was only supposed to be a two week visit. Also during that time my step daughter was sexually assaulted by step father and we took them to court and the mother called the child a liar and automatically took step fathers side. My husband and I have put her I counseling, pressed charges and done all that we can as loving parents. Charges were dropped due to lack of evidence and now mother is fighting to move child to Texas with her and husband (what a joke right). Keep in mind no child support has been paid and mother has not attempted contact in about a year and 5 months and before that would very rarely make phone calls. She was granted supervised visits which my daughter refuses to have and if she's forced she does not engage in contact AT ALL. She is terrified of these people but the system demands visits. Last time in court bio mom failed to appear because she put her husband as priority and said she could not make it and all visits were suspended. My step daughter is traumatized and terrified of these people. I wish she had a good bio mom but she doesn't and I have been the one to take This place without the official title. Is it hard? Heck yes you do all the work without the official title and have people constantly belittling you as just the "stepmom" but the title is earned not only because you give birth to a child it goes far beyond that. These children have real needs and it takes true responsibility to raise a child and meet their need and give them the love they deserve. I have experienced the feeling of not being recognized for all that I do as a step mom who has really taken on 100% responsibility but that's what being selfless is its doing these thing without expecting recognition from humans. When I married my husband I took on the responsibility of being a mommy whether full time or once a week. I love it and since we have had trouble having babies of our own I have truly been blessed with the opportunity to be a mommy before giving birth. God placed is in each others life and I cherish every moment. To all the step moms out there I know the feelings that go along with being a step parent but it's a huge role and God sees even when others don't. Keep being good mom mad and you shall be blessed. It's not the child's fault they deserve nothing but the best!!!

It's so funny how I KNOW everything you're saying but how different it sounds coming from someone else and not myself. And you are 100% correct that she tricked him into it. BOTH times. 1st was for marriage, the second was the first talk of divorce. I know how important it is for him to plan our "trying." I've been on pre-natals since November but we've pushed it back from this past Feb. to this coming Sept. I am willing to compromise to whatever his needs (reasonably) so that he is 100% ready for it to happen if/when it does. And he's voiced how excited he is to try for a girl - he's an amazing dad and I know she'd be a total "daddy's girl" which worries him that I want my own baby so bad and she'd be more about him than me *LOL* :) I know part of my issues are jealousy and part are this insecure part of me that doesn't like to be new at something. I'm the youngest and vividly recall feeling stupid for not knowing information or how to do something that the older kids could. I hear people talk about the life changing "wow we have a baby; what now?" affect. My friend was talking about how she and her husband were married 5 years before having their oldest. She said they wanted it, tried for it, but still came home from the hospital, put him in his bouncy chair and just looked at each other like, "now what?" It really bothers me that he will never have that "let's figure this out together" thing with me. He already knows what to do with a baby. It's even more upsetting as a woman that my husband could answer my pg/baby questions. It's actually nauseating to me. The other part is that I can't even confide in the one woman I never felt stupid "not knowing" around - my mom - because she passed away 6 years ago this June. I'm close with my MIL, she's a lovely lady, I just miss what I had with my mom. I think that's why I want a girl so badly. My sister and I are very different people but she understands me and also had her 1st after the death of our mom. I know she will be there for me (and she's had two girls and is a SM of a 15-year-old boy.) It's nice to have supports (you all included!) Jessegirl, I actually had such a difficulty adjusting to my whole situation (5000 mi. away from anyone I know, stay-at-home mom from previous working woman, dealing with the emotions of "step-mom" "second wife") and wondered if I really want to "start over" since they will both be in school next year. But then that thought angers me; That I'm burnt out on being a mom and I've never felt a baby kick. I already gave up on the possibility of multiple kids of my own but really feel that I NEED a baby of my own. I think I deserve that. Fortunately, so does my DH. And it will be amazing to create life from love instead of manipulation. I just wish I could OWN what you all have said. I know I'm the mom here and I know I'm the one the boys will think back to and I know I've been put here for a reason and that those boys need me. And I need them...it's just so strange the way the head and heart have this strange disconnect feature between them, y'know? MIL is a twin and sometimes I hope to have twins myself because I KNOW that will be different for him! How juvenile is that?!?!?! Well...Thanks for listening guys... Ouch! I saved my best swear words for a stubbed toe. I guess if it was broken, I would have to make a few up.

Thanks, I needed those! Seriously, I'm 48 and never outgrew mom's "poor baby" :) And I know she *loved* it when one of us called to tell here we were not well, so she could be mommy.

Luckily it is the middle toe - I have broken my big toe and my baby toe in the past, and those are worse.
(I'm really not a klutz, although ballerina was scratched from the list rather early.)

But I'm still a poor baby!!!!

Jessy's rounding up the calvary! I do hope your toe is doing better and "poor thing." Those suckers really hurt!

"Be sure and ice it, only 30 minutes at a time; check for toe turning blue and if it does, stop the icing. Restart the icing if your toe returns to normal. Be sure you are icing the correct toe." Now, this is likely my mother's advice....lol! She is certain I have no sense at all!

Seriously, I hope you are doing better now. I wasn't a ballerina either, but it was broken fingers I dealt with...baseballs, basketballs....

Aw, poor Weed....

I know how you feel. My dad's been gone a long time, and my mom passed in 2003 as well. I have VERY little of my family left--just a sister and an uncle, and I'm only 42. :/

Yep, I totally understand not being able to pick up the phone and hearing a voice that loves you unconditionally offer sympathy or encouragement. Call me mean or whatever, but I know firsthand why people of a certain age should NOT have babies. My parents were 44 when I was born. I lost my dad just after high school graduation, and I spent most of my 30s caring for an aging mother. I never really knew any of my grandparents.

I've had some difficulties recently and I so wish that there was someone I could call to just LISTEN.

The thing about a broken toe is....they don't do anything for it....no cast to your knee. no sling...no elaborate bandage...you just have to hobble like an old lady and wear dorky shoes!
And when it heals it'll probably be crooked and ugly....mine is!
There! Do you feel better now? At least you didn't drop something on a toe so that you lose the nail! EWWW! Now, that's really ugly!!

I miss my mom too, but not because she died! And not because I hurt myself. She's just not really there for me anymore and it feels empty. She has become very self oriented for the last 10 years, she's 80. Converstaions are all about her trip to the grocery store and that she needs tires and are endless. If she asks a question she doesn't really listen to the answer. Sometimes I really need to tell her something or ask her something and it's really hard to get her to pay attention.

I call evey week because I need to, but I never look forward to it. (And I've never said this to any one, except one sister. She misses mom too.)

Oh Weed, I have broken so many freakin toes and it HURTS! I hate to tell you, but when the weather changes the big toe I broke (or severely jammed, at any rate) still aches occasionally even after like almost 20 years. Sorry! :(

Hoping you feel better! All the CF aunties around here will come to your rescue with warm hugs and encouraging words! :)

There, now that's out of my system, I do feel for you. I had a horse step on my big toe a couple of years ago and the darned thing hurt like crazy and there's not a darned thing that can be done, really.

Now, what you really need is a tall cold drink and someone to bring it to you. Where, oh where is Raoul when you need him, the rat? LOL

Oh My Poor Little Weedie! I'm not a Mom but I'm a Grandmom (now that's pretty tricky to accomplish) so I'll just send the entire CF over to take care of you. I never learned to do the poor baby thing very well but I do know how to delegate.

Quite frankly, when I saw Jessy's note I am just so freaking happy to find out that its not any kind of doggie news that well, I'll just have to clink to your toe tonight with a nice cold alchoholic drink and wish that you had Nico or Annie's Raoul to serve you one of those funny blue drinks that you're so fond of - I think it was blue, anyway I do remember that it was something new and different.

I remember your pretty foot picture (or was that Gina's? oh well) and I hope that your toe looks and feels like itself soon.

Weed I'm very sorry you broke your toe. I know how painful it is. Take relief in knowing that when you break it it is not near as painful as when you hit it on a chair or the corner of the bed AFTER you break it. BE CAREFUL GIRL.

My mom would be proud, for the simple fact that I got so much sympathy ;)

LOL Linda sounds just like my Mom...I can still hear her saying "get over it"! But she was still my Mom and she loved us more than anything, she just wanted us to "tough it out".

No matter what her style there is nobody like a Mom when things hurt.

Chase - OMG! I can't believe you said that about Whirlwind! Mine just keeps getting smaller --- it is back down to one stinkin' eye! I was just thinking not 3 days ago what a loser it was. Such a shame - it is (was) a pretty hosta.

I wish I could send you some divisions of some of my other hosta. I don't know if you're allowed to send plants from the US to Canada. Or how long they'd be hung up in customs.
