I broke my freakin' toe today - stubbed it badly on the dryer. It's gotten worse, very swollen and a lovely shade of purple. Not sure how I'm going to get a shoe on tomorrow.

My mom died in 2003, so I can't call her and get "My poor baby!", nor can I get any "Poor baby, let me come over and cook you something good." And she won't call me in the morning and say "How is my poor baby doing?"

So if any of you moms and stepmoms can send a little "poor baby" my way, I'd appreciate it :)

I really miss my mom.

Oh, that's horrible! Both things - I'd just sink w/o my mother. I once had a friend lose her mom and say, "There's no one to call now when we get back from a trip just to say that we're OK." My mom is my best friend - an amazing person.

Ironically, my mom has broken her toe a few times, but the little one. She's not a complainer, but boy did that smart. I'm so sorry you're going through this. I can only advise, sandals, flip-flops or barefeet.

Sending some sympathy your way on all counts...

Dear BioMom, if you think that sending $57 dollars a month, phoning twice a week, sending occasional care packages and contacting the teachers from time to time means parenting an 11 years old and if you really think that $ 300 a month for a child are too much because "I spend that much on my family of 4 people in the house now and that includes diapers and baby wipes! And we dont buy clothing every single month for our children, clothes in our house last a while!" (clothes on 11 year old last a season, maybe, boys at that age outgrow pants, shoes every 3-6 months) and you really believe that "I mean only the rich can spend that kind of money on One child! Dad has to keep a roof over his and his new wifes and two childrens heads anyways, just because Im not his wife anymore shouldnt mean i have to help pay his rent, food and extra's,should it? and what else is there to spend on children, I mean come on ..I pay 50% of all his medical, sports, toys, personal hygene stuff,I buy schoold supply stuff, etc."(out of the $ 57 you send every month ?).......you really live in fairyland and frankly I am not surprised that when after you chose to relinquish the custody of your child, the judge decided not once but thrice to leave your son in what is clearly a loving and stable household and not to subject him to further disruption just because you have put in your mind that now, after remarrying, moving to another state etc..you can now stand up to your parenting role.. And I think the stpmom rightly resents the fact that while she's doing the REAL job of parenting, you still feel entitled to special consideration because you are the biological mother. Well in the real world it is not so: if you up and leave a 5 year old child and somebody else I raises him (everyday, not twice a week by the phone and during the summer vacation), she justly feel she has more rights than you. You write: "I only had one child with this man, what was I supposed to stay unmarried, have no more children and spend the rest of my life, staying close to this man making sure I help with all his bills?", you know that's exactly what the "wicked, cruel, bitter, full of hatred" stepmom did find in her heart to do, staying close to this man, helping him to pay his bills and raising his son, she did exactly what you could not find in your heart to do. Nobody forced you to eave your child. You chose, and everybody, your child, his father and the stepmom had to learn and to adapt to your choice. It is abot time you do it too. And let me tell about money, this woman has put her actions (and her money or her family's money, that she could otherwise spend) where her heart is, toward your son, while you evidently have chosen to do otherwise, till now. And the idea that as this biomom has now her own children so she should just "let you have yours" is completely wrong, children are not property of the parents to leave or take back on a whim but members of the family, to be cared and respected. If you really want to rebuild your relationship with the your son's father and stepmom, you should start to behave like a responsible, dependable person, financially too so they could start to trust you instead of just criticizing and belittle them and the good job they are doing while you are otherwise occupied.

After reading all of the above posts I just have to wonder...what must it be like for THESE CHILDREN to have to ask their stepparent if they can call them mom or dad? What is it like for THESE CHILDREN to be introduced as step or half or my husband's/wife's kid? I am quite certain of one thing-it is so dang hard to be a kid these days. It is so dang hard to try to fit in at school, in sports, let alone two different households. How must they feel? How alone or how confused? Why not just do what makes them comfortable? I personally have no experience with stepparents. My own parents have been married for 32 years. However, my mom has experience with every type of HORRIBLE stepparent that has ever lived. Her stepmother used to make HER daughters peanut butter and jelly and made my mom and her sisters freakish cheap lunchmeat sandwhiches. She burned all the baby pictures of my mom an her sisters and did absolutely unspeakable things I won't even mention. And do you know what she told me when I started dating a man with kids? She said, "I never wanted to be a stepmom because of my experiences as a kid. But I made a decision very early on that if I were ever to become a stepmom, I was going to be the best damn one that ever lived!" So here I am, and I'm going to be the best damn stepmom that ever lived. And if my stepkids are more comfortable being introduced as 'my kids' or if the day comes when they want to call me mom, or whatever have you, I'm going to do my best to make them feel good. BECAUSE IT'S NOT ABOUT ME!!! IT'S ABOUT THESE PRECIOUS CHILDREN!!! And I love them!

I got together with a guy in 1992. He had three kids (1, 5, 7) I had my own 1, 2, 5 yr olds. I was 23 yrs old. I did everything for all the kids, school stuff, sports, dance, scouts, plus I worked full time and went to college at night. I left in 1998 when I realized he never intended to marry me. The biggest slap in the face is (now) that they talk about how great their mom is because she lives 45 minutes away from them. All the years I was there, she was gone. She left her husband for another man that was traveling the carnival circuit... yes he was a carnie. They did that lifestyle for several years and then moved around from Las Vegas to New Mexico doing drugs and I guess being free. She never paid support and visited them once or twice a year. I guess it's good if she's not on drugs anymore but I don't know that. They don't have any contact with me since they have their "real" mom back in their lives. It was very painful and made it very hard for me to even date anyone with children again. I now have a wonderful husband and a sweet step daughter and I sometimes wonder if it will end the same way. BTW, my dad married my step mom 20+ years ago. She had 3 kids that were grown and we were grown. About 9 years ago, she had a brain aneurysm and is to this day, in a persistent vegetative state. Her sons stopped seeing her then. Her daughter (whom my dad treated like a daughter for the past 21 years) took care of her for two years (and was paid generously by my father) before she decided it was too much for her. She was visiting once every couple of months but that stopped shortly after they tried to bring a lawsuit against my father because they accused him of misappropriating the funds of her estate. Her care costs more than her income and my dad has paid it all without any help since she suffered this. He was devastated that after treating her (my stepsister) like a daughter (more than her own father) that she would stab him in the back. Her own father once excluded her son from a family portrait because he had a different last name... real nice guy. I've come to the conclusion that what I do may not be appreciated by the child but as long as my husband appreciates what I do, that's enough for me. I take care of my step daughter because she's a child that needs to be taken care of and I'm the one that's available. and I love my husband. I also take care of my step mom while my dad works. I do that because she needs to be taken care of and I love my dad. My dad loved her so it's important to do the right thing.

Of course he can go out. He does all the time. The point is he did not come home that night or has not been back since last Wednesday. He did bring the car backt until the next day on Thursday evening. But if he can't pay for the gas then he should be smart enough know he can't drive around until it goes out of gase. THEN ask his littler brother for help.... Never said he was a loser. He uses the victim card too much. His mother left him 4 years ago. I have been married for 4 years. I was a single a parent for 18 years and never had this type of problem....You can't force a 21 year old to get his degree, get up, go to school, do your homework, don't stay up too late. etc etc. He is older enough now to make choices. The youngest one does......He claims he is in Colorado and the husband sister sent the ticket. However, no word from any of them...But his dad thinks he is lying. Keep in mind Dad is in China. If he was here I wouldn't even worry about it.......YES I am thrilled that there is piece in our apartment right now....I am just thrilled.....But it saddens me when my wonderful husband is hurt....This happened beyond his control. So the 21 year old wants to act up while his dad is away. HOW CONVENIENT...I asked his family and told my husband that he would not respect me and would be doing something like this. Well GUESS WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!When we move into the house that is my request. You want to act like an adult go be an adult.......My husband and I are soo close, best friends etc. There is nothing that will come between us. So I am not worried about that............I guess I see where there is gaps and now I can see where people did not understand. However, I think asking the questions that could put the pieces together is just fine. But when you make this down right rude comments of this and that. I guess it shows something about you..NOT I......

I'm sorry to hear about your mother.Its moments like this,when we are reminded of how much we still need them in our lives...

Ouch! I saved my best swear words for a stubbed toe. I guess if it was broken, I would have to make a few up.

Thanks, I needed those! Seriously, I'm 48 and never outgrew mom's "poor baby" :) And I know she *loved* it when one of us called to tell here we were not well, so she could be mommy.

Luckily it is the middle toe - I have broken my big toe and my baby toe in the past, and those are worse.
(I'm really not a klutz, although ballerina was scratched from the list rather early.)

But I'm still a poor baby!!!!

Jessy's rounding up the calvary! I do hope your toe is doing better and "poor thing." Those suckers really hurt!

"Be sure and ice it, only 30 minutes at a time; check for toe turning blue and if it does, stop the icing. Restart the icing if your toe returns to normal. Be sure you are icing the correct toe." Now, this is likely my mother's advice....lol! She is certain I have no sense at all!

Seriously, I hope you are doing better now. I wasn't a ballerina either, but it was broken fingers I dealt with...baseballs, basketballs....

Aw, poor Weed....

I know how you feel. My dad's been gone a long time, and my mom passed in 2003 as well. I have VERY little of my family left--just a sister and an uncle, and I'm only 42. :/

Yep, I totally understand not being able to pick up the phone and hearing a voice that loves you unconditionally offer sympathy or encouragement. Call me mean or whatever, but I know firsthand why people of a certain age should NOT have babies. My parents were 44 when I was born. I lost my dad just after high school graduation, and I spent most of my 30s caring for an aging mother. I never really knew any of my grandparents.

I've had some difficulties recently and I so wish that there was someone I could call to just LISTEN.

The thing about a broken toe is....they don't do anything for it....no cast to your knee. no sling...no elaborate bandage...you just have to hobble like an old lady and wear dorky shoes!
And when it heals it'll probably be crooked and ugly....mine is!
There! Do you feel better now? At least you didn't drop something on a toe so that you lose the nail! EWWW! Now, that's really ugly!!

Ooh, Weed- that's got to hurt like crazy! Put it up if you can- it will ease the throbbing somewhat.

I miss my mom too, but not because she died! And not because I hurt myself. She's just not really there for me anymore and it feels empty. She has become very self oriented for the last 10 years, she's 80. Converstaions are all about her trip to the grocery store and that she needs tires and are endless. If she asks a question she doesn't really listen to the answer. Sometimes I really need to tell her something or ask her something and it's really hard to get her to pay attention.

I call evey week because I need to, but I never look forward to it. (And I've never said this to any one, except one sister. She misses mom too.)

Oh Weed, I have broken so many freakin toes and it HURTS! I hate to tell you, but when the weather changes the big toe I broke (or severely jammed, at any rate) still aches occasionally even after like almost 20 years. Sorry! :(

Hoping you feel better! All the CF aunties around here will come to your rescue with warm hugs and encouraging words! :)

Oh Weed, I AM a Mom, so I'll prop your foot up on a pillow and bring you a cup of tea and tell you that you're a poor baby. Would you like some cookies with that tea, baby, I'll go bake you some.....

There, now that's out of my system, I do feel for you. I had a horse step on my big toe a couple of years ago and the darned thing hurt like crazy and there's not a darned thing that can be done, really.

Now, what you really need is a tall cold drink and someone to bring it to you. Where, oh where is Raoul when you need him, the rat? LOL

Oh My Poor Little Weedie! I'm not a Mom but I'm a Grandmom (now that's pretty tricky to accomplish) so I'll just send the entire CF over to take care of you. I never learned to do the poor baby thing very well but I do know how to delegate.

Quite frankly, when I saw Jessy's note I am just so freaking happy to find out that its not any kind of doggie news that well, I'll just have to clink to your toe tonight with a nice cold alchoholic drink and wish that you had Nico or Annie's Raoul to serve you one of those funny blue drinks that you're so fond of - I think it was blue, anyway I do remember that it was something new and different.

I remember your pretty foot picture (or was that Gina's? oh well) and I hope that your toe looks and feels like itself soon.

Weed I'm very sorry you broke your toe. I know how painful it is. Take relief in knowing that when you break it it is not near as painful as when you hit it on a chair or the corner of the bed AFTER you break it. BE CAREFUL GIRL.

My mom would be proud, for the simple fact that I got so much sympathy ;)

LOL Linda sounds just like my Mom...I can still hear her saying "get over it"! But she was still my Mom and she loved us more than anything, she just wanted us to "tough it out".

No matter what her style there is nobody like a Mom when things hurt.

Chase - OMG! I can't believe you said that about Whirlwind! Mine just keeps getting smaller --- it is back down to one stinkin' eye! I was just thinking not 3 days ago what a loser it was. Such a shame - it is (was) a pretty hosta.

I wish I could send you some divisions of some of my other hosta. I don't know if you're allowed to send plants from the US to Canada. Or how long they'd be hung up in customs.
