My "new" (budget) kitchen
Comments (29)Colleen, it's at least better than the bedroom we just did upstairs, it looks kind of like butterscotch pudding and was supposed to just be a medium tan kind of color. I'm not good at determining what color it will be on the wall, it's never what I think it will be. As for the counter, I really did just "podge" it on with the sponge any old way. I liked it better lighter than darker, so I sponged on more of the light stuff. I was shocked that it actually looks OK, LOL. Brad, thank you, I appreciate that. Bobby and Shirl, I definitely still want to move, there is no place on earth that I want to be, no matter how nice the house, except the farm. If it were only the house that mattered, I'd have stayed in Elery's house instead of selling it. Yes, I definitely still want to move. Madonna, isn't it amazing what a little paint and about a week's worth of work will do? Linda, so when are you going to come and visit, just to see the new kitchen in person? Or are you waiting until we build at the farm and see my really NEW "new" kitchen? Heck, I might have to have another Michigan Run when that happens! Comments (41)Thanks, all! Nosoccermom, we did not paint the doors. We were concerned about that pinkish tint, too, but decided we could always paint in the future if we hated them as they are after installation. As it turns out, they are definitely an off-white, but the pink seems to depend completely on lighting. In natural and direct light, they are warm white but not pink. In dim light, they do take on that pinkish look. We have the white fridge right next to the cabinets, which you can see in a photo I posted above, and in another area there are cabinets adjacent to wainscoting painted with BM simply white. You can certainly see the difference in those locations, but we don't find it jarring. Those spots are the areas where the pinkish tone is most prominent in dim light, though. We didn't replace the fridge, since the old one still works fine, and we are happy enough with the way it looks with the cabinets that we will probably go with white again when this one does need to be replaced. So, I would say to anyone considering these doors, you have to bring a sample home and see how it looks in your home with your lighting to really know how it will look....See MoreDIY Budget Kitchen Refresh Reveal *9 photos
Comments (34)Wow, Kathy, I think I'm as impressed with your "can do" attitude and common sense as your impressive kitchen redo. Thanks so much for sharing. Love all your color sections, especially the way the fabric in your kitchen window curtain pulls it all together. Before, the kitchen was chaotic, and now your colors are so soothing. Also love the way you rearranged the cabinets to maximize your space and storage. By the way, I know what you mean about measuring as that scares me too when I'm spending real money. I do have two suggestions for when you save up more $$$. The first is that you order full extension drawers, or trays, to go inside the large base cabinet with the double doors on the right side of the range. I ordered from Quikdrawers.com for the cabinets in my dining room and am extremely happy with the company and the result. They make a quality product, the guy who helps you (Keith) knows his stuff, and spacing between the trays is fully adjustable to maximize storage for what works best for you. Those pull outs certainly beat standing on your head and rearranging to see what's in the back. The second suggestion is to add a light rail and led puck lights run by batteries that you can just tap to get them to come on. My daughter-in-law knows a number of her neighbors who have used that approach and that it works pretty well if you don't want to go the electrician route. Those lights should be available at the big box stores or online elsewhere. Again, five stars on your project all the way around. It is well worth all the time, stress, and worry. Also, your low budget is hard to believe....See MoreBudget kitchen Reno
Comments (21)Ok, so obviously not practical to put dishwasher on the left side of the sink. Is the corner cabinet next to your range a lazy susan? Is that where you are storing pots and pans currently? Are you sure you only need one 36-inch drawer cabinet? When looking through your pictures, it seems you need space for pet food, kitchen electrics, trash can, k-kups and whatever else you're storing in the little cabinet with colored drawers and the sideboard where you have the Keurig. Speaking of which, you need counter space for the canisters and coffee maker. I see potential in rearranging some of your existing cabinets and purchasing a couple additional base and upper cabinets. I'm almost positive you can find matching, basic cabinets, off-the-shelf at a big box store such as HD or Lowe's. Just an idea to throw out there for consideration....See Morefisherpete
