Comments (59)I'm going to disagree with advice to paint first and hold off on reupholstering the chairs. You say you've been waiting three years to do this. Selecting fabric can take a lot of time--esp. when working with an open floorplan where you want the colors/fabrics to flow from room to room. You have some lovely fabrics to choose from that can be incorporated into your space in a variety of ways--or even into the adjacent rooms. I recovered my DR chairs last year and am so glad that I did. Mine also were hard and uncomfortable--which you said yours are as well. One thing that was important to me was the fabric not only coordinate with my DR, but my LR since I planned to occasionally move the DR chairs into the LR if I needed extra seating for a party. Personally I found a stripe to be the most versatile choice. I do also agree that you are more likely to tire of a floral or find it more limiting as time goes on. To me, your ivory will always read more formal due to the sheen of the present fabric--not so much the color. If you still like the floral, I would again consider using two complimentary fabrics and use the floral in smaller doses. For instance, you could do the host chairs in floral and others in stripe or solid, or do different backs/fronts as I suggested earlier. Or bring in your floral fabric in a less permanent way via a table or buffet runner. Calico Corners is also really good with suggesting complimentary fabrics. It may be worthwhile to bring in a swatch of the valance fabric and ask for advice on complementary fabrics....See MoreHelp Me Dress My Dining Room Windows - Lots of Pics
Comments (22)Ok, so repainting the room is an option: that's your out! Or should I say "easy" solution? Repaint in a color more in keeping with the gorgeous rug (which is beautiful and valuable on many levels-honeymoon purchase being one of them!). Then your window treatments (panels-maybe) will be a much easier decision. I'm not loving the panel options mentioned above, which I think are nice, but a tad too informal for the direction you have taken with your room. Plus, they are very trendy, which again is not in keeping with your traditional style. You have heirloom quality pieces there! The rug and furniture should stay. Paint is cheap (compared to the investment in good quality furniture and the rug)! That's the way to make a significant impact without breaking the bank. Take a good look at the colors in the rug. On my monitor I see blue as the primary color, but monitors vary. Go to the paint store and bring some sample cards home, narrow it down and then go back and buy some paint samples and splotch away. In any case, have fun with this project!...See MoreAsian Mahogany furniture living room - redesign idea needed!
Comments (8)Pleasant looking room. Would not try changing everything at once. You might begin by replacing only the uncomfortable seating and keep the other furnishings. For comfort, you cannot beat a recliner if you want to replace the individual chairs first. There are "ladies" recliners that are smaller as well as huge oversized ones. A platform rocker or wing back chair would be worth considering -- either can be comfortable. Consider a two-seat sofa -- a love seat -- instead of a larger sofa that would fit in the same space as your current sofa rather than crowd the room. Alternately, if you find a two-seat sofa you truly like, and don't want a recliner, you might consider getting a pair of two-seat sofas and set them across from each other -- maybe even keeping one or both of your current chairs to put where your sofa now sits until you find something you truly like to replace them. Sit in what you buy before buying it and make sure it is comfortable for you -- for your size. What is comfortable for a 6'6" guy is usually not be comfortable for a smaller guy or petite female....See MoreCan you help me keep my Mom’s Dining Room Furniture?
Comments (34)winendine5- You do not enough space for an area rug in that dining room. You only have exactly enough space for the table and chairs and buffet. Not an extra inch of space. Not a problem, there are plenty of ways to add color to the room. And when you are eating in there, the food adds color as well, in addition to the centerpiece. I don't know if you are going to keep the color of the chair upholstery, but that is easy enough to change if you want, to either a solid or print. I like white or off-white curtains, and you can add a trim on the edges that coordinates with whatever color chair seat you choose. I would suggest eating at the table and sitting at it for a good 2-2.5 hours as you would for a dinner party. Somehow the spokes of the back of the chair don't look particularly comfortable. If they are not, you can have cushions made for the back of the chair. I would also not center the table exactly, move it a bit closer to the windows than the buffet. After all, if chairs bump the window wall, that is an easy fix with spackle and paint. If they bump the buffet, terrible! And be sure to seat your larger guests on the window wall. You can also purchase thing-a ma-bobs with the wool felt for the bottoms of your chairs so they don't mar your wood floors when the chairs are pulled out and pushed in as you won't be having a rug in the room....See Moredilly_ny
