Straw hats!? THIS time of year!?

Where can I find (at this stage of the game!) a couple of straw hats (the kind with the large brims) to paint a black cat on for Halloween and to do a snowman on for winter? You know, the kind where the crown is painted black, ears, fuzzy tail, etc. are added on? The snowman uses the crown for his face and then a small hat is attached to his "head", etc.?

Checked at WalMart and they don't have any. Shoot! Guess I should have thought of them back when it was still summer! Grumble...grumble...LOL

Try someplace like the Dollar Tree in the toy section. I think I've seen some there in the past. You may have to pull the trim off.

Making Birdhouses Out Of Straw Hats?
Q

I did this once, quite a few years ago :-) I was concerneded about using any product that might be toxic, but I was also worried about the crown of the hat collapsing, so I found a margerine tub that was a good fit for the inside of the crown and cut the "birdie door" through both layers. Then I stiched around the edges of the opening with yarn and used a staplegun to attach the hat to a thin piece of plywood the same size as the hat brim. I hung it on one of our porch posts where it was mostly out of the weather, and it became a favorite of the house wrens, they nested in it almost every year. I was able to pull out the staples to make sure the nest was cleaned out before each nesting season. It lasted for several years before the straw just finally started to disintegrate. Dunno why I never made another one?? :-/ It was cute, well, I guess that's another thing for my list . . .

Diana, they are keeping me so darned busy at work, and then my design business is zipping right along that I've never gotten any time off since I emailed you. I'd love to meet you and see your garden! Satellite, with your description it sounds like you should be over here living in East Atlanta!! Sarah has a little boy of 4? These are people I probably know. That is good the Mesculin is going well for you. At these temps they germinate so unevenly unless you can give some shade at times. I'm amazed we are still eating garden lettuce. I'm eating it right now as a matter of fact. And some Cherokee purple that bugs didn't get. Yum. Come in and say hey at work if you get the chance. I'm there every night except Fri & Sat (except this week, this week I'm working 7 days) but weekends are band practice nights! GGG

All of them are beautiful, but the Sipa Michu is the best. Could I talk you into sending me some of their seeds when they get mature? I sure would appreciate it and reimburse the postage.

It's "Grandmother's Hat" Time . . .

FWIW, if you're in a cold zone Grandmother's Hat is likely to also do well for you. A lot of times I just have to sigh in envy on the Antique Roses forum for so many of those roses that only do well zone 7 and higher (even for a zone pusher). Fortunately, GH is a rose that is happily hardy in my zone 5 garden, though it is on the sunny protected side of the house. It usually has surviving cane, which no more than 20% of my roses have in any given winter. It grows to a good 5-6 feet and puts out nice blooms though not as profusely as I'm sure it does in warmer zones. Grandmother's Hat is one of those roses like Bonica or Darlow's Enigma that I would propose as doing well in just about any region zone 5-9. I have yet to hear of anyone saying those roses didn't do at least moderately well for them. Cynthia

You might even check out some of the bigger dept stores such as Filene's (now Macy's) and see what they have left over on clearance. J.C. Penney's, Sears, maybe, maybe not. Good luck in find the hats.

Thanks, Judy, but I don't need them now. I already had one and then found another one at a garage sale. Gave one to my grandkids to hang on their door and kept one for me. I'll post a photo when I can locate the camera! LOL
