Another thought I had might be that the there's too much green so maybe the drapes should be orange and then I place the ballard painting on the big wall.

I think you are on the right track--and I think the orange curtains will fit the style better. Love the idea of a spanish mirror.

Htnspz - I think you should go with a slightly larger rug. Your dining set is very attractive but it's chunky, so the little rug can't compete with the visual weight of it. Go bolder and bigger.

Also, the walls seem so cold and tall. (I like more casual, traditional things, so I'm just sayin'....) Could you put up a piece of chair rail or something that kind of echos a chair rail but is more modern-feeling? It would break up the huge expanse of tall wall. Perhaps when you hang the pictures, they'll take care of this issue, though.

I'd do something moody, painting the walls. Here are some ideas showing a sunny golden color with amber tones, similar to the ceiling color. It looks like you have a great view, but maybe the lowers are covered for a reason? How about some shutters. Here are a number of colors. Couldn't find your fixture so selected something else with a pillar candle look.

Not the right rug and it doesn't work with your prints, but you can see how good the colors look, multi-colored from reds and golds to blue. Did the ceiling in the wall color here.

Thank to everyone who responded! I am having trouble with the room because the ceilings are so tall. They make the room feel larger but also, slightly uncomfortable. I am stuck with the light colored laminate on the floors that I don't especially like and I would love to change the dining chairs but the budget doesn't permit:(

I never mentioned it, but my concept is Spanish, but a more modern interpretation.

Funkyart: I like the idea of a spanish mirror also. I'll be photoshopping orange drapes.

Folkvictorian: I agree, I need to address the tall walls. It's not proportional to the size of the room. I'll be exploring a chair rail, but would prefer not to add the expense until I know I need it.

Squirrelheaven: Thanks so much for photoshopping more options. I really like the color you added to the walls. I've been trying many different colors to no avail. I like the shutters but they will obscure a pretty (one day)backyard. I might be able to duplicate a similar look by doing a chair rail. You are really good with photoshop! Normally, I have to do the floor plan in autocad and then do a 3d of it and then render it. You're a real pro!

I can't see those bird prints in the decorating scheme you seem to be wanting to go to, to me they read soft and traditional; a large carved wood mirror on one wall, a larger and boldly patterned rug , those 2 things would be my starting point.

Htnspz, I agree with Mitch. The bird prints are not in keeping with look that is evolving in the photoshop presentations.

If you are going to go in the direction Squirrel has been suggesting (which I think is ideal) I agree that more dramatic art would really be in sync with that. Even if you keep things simple for a while as you gradually acquire things for the room, from your first bare-bones pic I still think different art would suit your space better. I love the birds, don't get me wrong. I even own the bird print you posted!

You have a great space & great ideas. I know it will come together beautifully & you'll have a really stunning dining room. Please keep us posted!

If the ceiling height is bothering you, you might try something dark like a red so it doesn't soar. Ceiling and walls, low contrast between the two, for a feeling of enclosure.

Here are the shutters open, lol. I really like the linear effect with the extra shutter sections in there, too. Not sure exactly how they would open and fall back, though.

Another more vibrant red in the last pic, though it's looking kind of dark. Don't have anything for the walls to brighten it up. A dramatic pattern on the panels is nice, imo.

Squirrel, you're a genius with the Photoshop! I like the Mediterranean-y dark wood shutters and I like the long, dramatic drapes even better! What a beautiful space you've made!

Wow, Squirrel, I just can't get over the transformations! Your design plan with the shutters is really amazing! Opened or closed, the shutters look fabulous! The drapes are great too.

You not only are a master at using photshop techniques, but your eye for design & your ability to come up with options for any space is outstanding. I'm sure Htsnpz is VERY grateful.

IRL someone would charge big bucks for this service & probably wouldn't produce results this stunning!

Was just looking at black rooms over on AtticMag. Trying something reallly deep, to make those walls disappear. This is still in the red family. Not sure how things tie in the adjacent areas, but the woodwork is also dark here.

Some colorful tiles around the mirror. That's supposed to be a candelabra on the right. Not cutting out well. Something more substantial and heavy would be better, I think.

Maybe some additional lighting. Or recover the chairs that you'd like to change (DIY).

I have that same window in my small dining room, which also has a high ceiling. (However, it's a high tray ceiling, not a vaulted ceiling.)

Anyway, I have drapes hung just like in the picture, and they really do help to bring the eyes up. I also added white blinds because the window faces west, and it gets very hot in the afternoon. All in all, I do like that look, and will use it again, although I'm getting ready to change out the entire color scheme.

Problems, problems. I painted the other room red! That could be difficult to transition gracefully.

Doodling around. I wonder if you could get a widening and balancing effect playing with the artwork like this, irl.

Definately the high hung drapes. The metal sculpture thingy was just fighting with the chandelier. Gorgeous no matter what colour you paint.

I think I like the more beigy colors because I have a huge room to do. I'm going to try and deepen it a little with maybe a more caramel color.

What do you mean you think you'll need them? How do they extend into the other room? Can you get a picture further back to see the whole ceiling in the dr and some of the ceiling area around it, if possible?

I was GOING to say I really like the original chandelier...that is until I saw all of Squirrel's photoshops with the double chandelier. Any one of those color combinations are beautiful - I especially like the first one posted by Squirrel at 11:55 today. Wow!

Here's my 2 cents

Definitely the longer drapes. Definitely the double tier chandy. I like the beigy walls. I would use a solid drape more in the tone of the walls. It's softer and makes the room flow cleaner. Try to find a very oversized modern picture for the larger wall. Home Goods has some of that poster art that resembles a painting. You can always add spanish type accessories to the room using the oranges and greens. If you keep all the lines clean, you can achieve the modern/spanich style more successfully. If you go for a rug that is not patterned make sure it has texture to add depth.

Trying for a caramel color, maybe this is somewhat one. I was thinking, since you want something more modern, how about reversing the dark beams and going with a light painted version. Also in line with your current trim.

Here are some solid panels, similar to the wall color. Going light on the side walls would keep it from feeling narrow.

Thinking along the lines of covering the chairs you don't like, I saw these great slipcovers, with tassels, that feel kind of Spanish. I've done the seats in something similar.

I'm thinking of adding them to the ceiling for architectural interest and to bring a little more Spanish to the space. They wouldn't be functional. I think I still like them dark. omg, I love my painting there and now I'm in a dilemma because I liked the idea of the mirror there and was thinking it might visually widen the narrow space.

I'm loving the photoshop with the beigy long drapes. The room has a casual elegance to it. Dark beams will work. Solid soft rug with texture. The green picture works great on the large wall. Keep it simple and have fun with the accessories.

I like where you put the bird prints. I was hoping to use them over the sofa in the adjoining room, but might consider another painting a little more dramatic and has all the colors of the room in green, orange, and blue over the sofa.
I think the picture is a little misleading but there's only a wall space of around 4 ft. Doesn't leave much room for much of anything. I'll explore one mirror but there's already another mirror further down the wall at the entrance to the room.
Seeing this is great though because it's really a jumping off point and now I can continue the adjoining living room.
