Please help to decorate odd shaped walls..pics...

My daughter just moved into her apartment and is trying to decorate it. However, it has these odd stair-step walls/shelves (?) and neither of us have any idea how to decorate them. I lurk on this board almost everyday and LOVE all the great ideas and have learned so much. But I still have no idea what to tell her to do with them. I am hoping someone can help with this dilemma.

(The Bud neon sign is going to go and is just there until its put in storage. Also, please ignore the wires for the surround sound ect. Thats going to be fixed.)

Gosh, that wall does present a challenge, huh? I would try books.. probably books and plants. The scale is probably too big for lining up books-- I'd probably try strategically stacked hardbacks to look "artfully haphazard". I'd also hang artwork on the back wall.

Yes....what was the problem with the trees? This room would look great filled with well-chosen, i.e. tall and stately and glamorous, plants. The light available would let them thrive and they can't hurt the porcelain floor. The space looks to be at least 12 feet high, so you need to be careful of scale for anything you put there....normally scaled furniture, tables etc. may look really off. Is there any particular function you need here? Do you already have storage for shoes, coats, umbrellas near this entrance? What is your climate, how hot or cold will this space get seasonally, is there a risk of mud being tracked in? One obvious item....those little ceiling lights in no way match the size and glamour of this space, they will need to be changed out, but only as part of an overall redesign.

Yes @Sabrina Alfin I was thinking about something like that. My dad has some more of the cherry, and I thought about having him make some shelves for either above the toilet or as triangles in the corner. How deep do you think they should be? Should they go from wall to wall? How many?

Don't know what the heck those numbers mean on the floor plan. You'll probably have to "float" the seating arrangement in the middle of the room. A couch will be in the middle, with the back of it hugging the straight dash line. To either side of it (allowing of course for room to get around), will be an upholstered chair. Add curtains, side tables, art, rug etc. See if you can get local art. Art is a very personal thing. Take your time and get pieces you love. Carefully consider the amount of space you have to move around. I personally like more space than stuff, but that's me. How many people do you usually have sitting in this room? If you entertain a lot, consider additional seating with poofs and/or mini ottomans that people can sit on. Another option for extra seating is putting slightly upholstered straight back chairs in the corner for company. I'm personally not keen on Bobs furniture - I'm just giving you a general idea. thank you @Jennifer K We don't have a door to the basement stairs now, so I suspect it's not code. That hall closet you see jutting into the laundry room is actually a "drop zone." I'm thinking something along the lines of the photo below. That's more valuable to me than a laundry sink. I have a slop sink in the basement, so while a laundry sink is a nice-to-have, I'm willing to sacrifice it, I think. I was worried about the lack of any kind of drop zone in the previous iterations. I do wonder if there's a more efficient laundry room layout, especially if we get rid of the window. I was having similar thoughts about the small walls against what's marked as the playroom and will look at that again. I agree with your point that the playroom is unlikely to stay that way. I give it another two years before it becomes an "adult" space. (Fingers crossed!) We'll never use it as a dining room because it's too small, though that's what it was when we bought the house. The fireplace can't be killed because our ancient steam heat uses the chimney. To your point on the foyer closet under the stairs: The floorplan is deceiving! It's actually a large, really useful closet with lots of coat hanging space on the right and shelves for winter gear. So that will stay as-is. Thank you!

Thanks so much for both ideas!! Since she is a law student, she has tons of books. I also like the idea of baskets because storage in an apartment is so limited. Thanks again!

I'd also move the pictures from the mantel and include them in the wall-step decoration.

Yes -- start with using the shelves/steps as her Law Library!

Mix in dark baskets for storage!

And then hang black-and-white photos or items from the mantel on the walls themselves!

I can see a tall, bushy plant/flowers, either real or silk, on each ledge in a pretty copper vase or something similar. I would get something with color.

She could put her books in front of them and have the plants as a backdrop.

The bottom ledge where the printer is would be really cute decorated as a desk. I'm sure she's doing a ton of writing and it would be a nice place to sit and study.

All good suggestions! I would create a separate vignette on each shelf, including books, baskets, etc. with a painting at the back of each shelf. If she has lots of law books, I wonder how it would look to line both walls of the shelves with books, so that the books come together at a right angle.

I would build 12" bookshelves to fit along the front edge, fill them with books, and use the area behind the books for storage.

Or, because it looks like a tansu, paint a fake one on there and decorate as if it were a tansu.

Can you tell us how wide each of the 'steps' are, and how deep?

I am wondering if she wants to make that a focal point, or make it disappear? That might change what you do with the area.

Also would help to see some pix of the rest of the space, rather than so tightly focused on that area. Can you get us some wider shots, from the other angles of the open space?

I cant measure the steps or get better pics for another week or so because my daughter is on vacation right now. However, she will definitely get that when she gets back. Thanks for the help!
