I've never used them directly but the owner did, they provided glass & mirrors for cabinets: Capitol Glass. If I remember they are on Washington. More uptown is Broadway Glass and Mirror, I used them a couple of years ago when I needed mirrors for a couple of rooms and glass for cabinet doors. On BW and 84th or 85th. Get specific directions.

Tanem, that sounds like a great price. I just had a custom 29.25" square mirror cut, with just polished edges, and my price was about 2.5 times yours -- $11.25/square foot. (It was the last piece of this bathroom, and at $70, I didn't feel like shopping it around more to see if I could save $20 or $30.) I priced an in-stock mirror at Home Depot and I think it was just about, or slightly less than, what your glass store is quoting. So yes, it's a decent price! -- Eric

Use a brad point drill bit to prevent skating and drill away. Drills cut and remove material. Wood is drilled at relatively high RPM and actually pretty quickly to prevent heat buildup (the chips remove the heat). Splitting would occur if you pushed the drill to fast or used a dull bit. Smoke indicates a dull bit, to slow a drilling speed (RPM or penetration), or the bit not being held perpendicular and rubbing the sides of the hole.

We had the same size mirror in both our bathrooms. We (DH & I) remodeled the guest bath ourselves, and were terrified of dealing with the mirror! We got it off the wall in one piece and called several recycling and glass companies trying to get rid of it, and no one would deal with that large a piece of glass. So we bought a glass scoring tool with the intention of cutting it into smaller pieces for recycling. We were totally unable to score or cut the glass! We ended up putting it between layers of plastic drop cloths and hitting it with hammers to break it, and even then it was extremely hard to break. We asked our GC to do the same thing you are proposing in the master bath. They successfully removed the mirror and his glass and cabinet guys magically made it turn into two beautifully framed mirrors. I guess my point is that you may need professional, industrial-grade tools to cut the mirror. And if you decide to get rid of it I hope you have better luck finding someone who will haul it away.
