Hi,
Good morning..I hope you are all having a lovely sunday morning.
I have been in a relationship with my partner for the past 7 months. She has 3 kids and i also have two kids. My kids live with me, and are not in touch with their Mom (due to abuse issues..).
My daughter is very close to me, and demands my attention a lot. My partner noticed this early in the relationship, and has been trying to be accomodating. However, my daughter (11 years) can be rude (sometimes to me, also). When she was with her Mom - she was allowed to talk openly and express herself - to any adult in any manner - so I am not sure she knows the boundaries between appropriate questions or comments to ask adults. She often "pokes her mouth" into whatever adults are doing, and this can be embarrassing. That is how her Mom also talks.
For example, last Saturday, my partner and I went into the park with the kids and we had to take some pictures...we gave a peck on the lips to each other while we took the picture. My daughter saw us do this from afar ....she suddenly began nagging us, screaming "this is disgusting" "you guys are nasty". I told her to stop and she finally did, but my partner was very angry. Another example, we went shopping and my partner and I bought some clothes -- my daughter would just turn around and pass negative comments on the clothes, sometimes to my partner's hearings. I told her such comments are highly inappropriate. Again, the same saturday, my partner had a new weave on her hair...immediately my daughter saw her, she just indicated (to me) "what did she have on her hair..it doesn't look good" -- I had to rebuke her privately, and told her not to talk about any adult in such a manner. Besides, she is very hyperactive, and likes to pull pranks.
Her Mom's means of discipline was very harsh including screaming, beatings, etc. Since they abuse, they have been with me for the past 1 year - I don't hit and very rarely scream at them. So I talk to them constantly and try to correct their behaviors -- and then if not effective, take away rights and privileges - this seems to work, albeit slowly.
Obviously, my partner is aware of her disrespectful behavior, and occasionally she tries to correct it and rebuke her. But I think she concerned about it and it is "getting to her" When my partner rebukes or chides her kids - she does it really harshly (screaming, argumentative, and a body language that tells that she seems to indicate that she is fighting with an adult). She does it with her own children (so this is not isolated with my kids alone). And she told me about this when we met - that she screams when she is stressed out by something..I can understand that. She rebukes and talks to my daughter as if they are rivals and are fighting -- and my daughter is getting afraid of and having difficulty bonding with her. One friend of mine also noticed the way she talked to both her son and my daughter and commented on the fact that it seems she talks to kids as if they are adults.
My daughter is also mourning the loss of her Mom, and indicated to me that my partner wants to be her Mom and she resents it. I do not condone my daughter's behavior, and believe other adults have a right to discipline kids. But I also believe that during the early stages in a relationship where kids are trying to bond, one has to tread carefully.
I want to talk to my partner about this issue -- her manner of rebuking my daughter (and the other kids) -- but it is a touchy one. So how do I approach it? I don't to put her in a position to become defensive or for me to sound as if I am condoning my daughter's behavior. And I also don't want my daughter to feel that she can walk over my partner -- that is a recipe for disaster.
What would be the best way to handle this?
best regards, Ppppp
