how to grow veggies in the hot hot hot weather
Comments (12)My "early" garden was a bust, even with shadecloth on parts of it, though I may have waited too long before shading. I grew 4 kinds of corn, all supposed to be heat & drought tolerant & got nary an ear, but it bloomed. On the other hand, my fall garden did well & I managed to get at least some tomatoes. My winter garden is peculiar--lettuce & some greens bolting, broccoli making loose heads, etc. In January. Just enough cold weather for my cabbage to start heading finally. I have planted a couple of cool weather tomatoes in hopes they will survive, but the others stay in for now. Most of the black tomatoes will continue to produce in heat & a few others. I find myself freezing more now so I know I will have it. Last year was a sure cure for complacency!...See MoreWhat's blooming in wet and cool fall weather?
Comments (12)Thank you, Kate, for posting those gorgeous pics - I love them, esp. Elle. Your garden looks like paradise with healthy plants. It has been raining here since Sunday, I haven't seen the sun yet. Thanks for posting those pics. which brighten up my day. Canadian_rose: What's the secret to having 43 blooms on L.D. Braithwaite? I love to see your soil test report. I visited Cantigny rose garden in all seasons, and saw a handful of blooms on mostly leaves Austins. Chicago area doesn't have much sun like other places I had lived (MI, CA, CT). Thanks, Seil, Jim, and TNY for reports on loaded bushes. I'm always glad to hear from Predfern - you are right about Bolero having a great fragrance. The public garden has many loaded Bolero bushes - these can jazz up a small area with tons of blooms. Both Queen Elizabeth and Bolero are elegant, compact, with more flowers than leaves. I spent 10 minutes at the rose park looking for Double Delight blooms, but could not find them. With hubby's help, I found spotted Double Delight blooms buried in a jungle of leaves. The Austins are also messy in the fall, like a few blooms buried in a jungle of shooting canes and leaves. At the park the floribundas and grandifloras really shine in the fall - still loaded with 3/4 flowers, and 1/4 leaves. I planted Austins since my garden is mostly shade, but if I have more sun - I would go for other types with more blooms....See MoreNeed cool dinner ideas for hot weather
Comments (45)Oooh, gazpacho! If ony I had fresh tomatoes on hand. And a mufuletta is definitely a meal in sandwich form. I've made the exact recipe that Lars links to as dinner for our family of 3. 1 sandwich. 14" in diameter. Heaven on a plate. When the weather starts to scorch my brain I turn to thoughts of Southeast Asian cuisine. Rice paper wrapped spring rolls & green papaya salad, things like that. But one of my favorite things to make quick & easy is larb. This recipe is from epicurious & is very tasty. I substitute ground turkey for the chicken and will use red leaf lettuce for wrapping. I also drain the meat after it's cooked, prior to adding the "marinade".: larb chicken salad Bon Appétit : September 1998 Fragrant lemongrass, chilies and a sweet and tangy sauce flavor this classic Thai appetizer. Comments (21)Rough Linen Forever! No Bamboo for us since it's rayon and a hot chemical mess. The Federal Trade Commission, the nation’s consumer protection agency, wants you to know that the soft “bamboo” fabrics on the market today are rayon. They are made using toxic chemicals in a process that releases pollutants into the air. Extracting bamboo fibers is expensive and time-consuming, and textiles made just from bamboo fiber don’t feel silky smooth. There’s also no evidence that rayon made from bamboo retains the antimicrobial properties of the bamboo plant, as some sellers and manufacturers claim. Even when bamboo is the “plant source” used to create rayon, no traits of the original plant are left in the finished product. FTC on Bamboo Fabrics...See Morerovo
