30' Sink in 30' base?

I'm wondering if I cut the top-sides of the sink cabinet if I can fit a 30" undermount sink into a 30" sink base?

I wouldn't...you'd be destroying the integrity of the cabinet that is designed to support the sink and all the weight of dishes and water it needs to carry....

You will be much better off with a 27 or 28 inch sink.

The cabinet will need to be modified, but it's doable. Make sure you have a seasoned cabinet installer, and most important a countertop fabricator that can do precision work.

Thanks. Our new KD sent me to a home across town with the exact cooktop (KA) and 30" drawer base. Wow!!! Yep it fits with a haircut. The KD designated STDW (scooped, or cut down) option for the top drawer, and the sides of the cab got a trim, but the top drawer holds (as mentioned) potholders, tools and about five lids - great use of space and very cook friendly.

It all depends on the cabinet. The 30" is the exterior dimensions of the cabinet - you have to deduct the width of the sides of the cabinet in order to get the interior dimensions of the cabinet. Depending on how the sink is attached, you still could need more than just enough room for the sink to fit. From your photo, it looks like you would be cutting it a bit close and I would be concerned that cutting so close would compromise the integrity of the cabinets. I would feel safer going with a smaller sink so that there is less of a chance for my cabinet to get damaged. Others have done this, perhaps they will chime in with what they did. I had to send to the installers the dimensions and pdf's of my sinks before they came out to template my countertops. Did they ask you to do this?

I plan on doing just that, but only with the Kohler Whitehaven cast-iron undermount. Kohler's Web site says it will "fits minimum 30-inch apron sink base cabinet." I stayed away from the handmade fireclay sinks because I was worried about the fit. Good luck!

I was a kitchen designer for 20 years and found that the recommended sizes can be altered. Often a 30' sink will fit without cutting the cabinet. The flanges will sit on the top of the cabinet sides and will act as support. The sides will have to be routed down the thickness of the sink material. Here is a link that will illustrate.

You will NEVER be able to change out the sink if there's a problem without completely destroying the sink base. If you go the conventional route of having a sink be smaller than the sink base it sits it, then if there is a problem in the future, the sink can be swapped out, or even possibly changed to another profile and the granite recut. If you think that nothing like that could ever happen to you, just ask Live_wire_oak about her client who shot a hole in a brand new kitchen sink.
