Fireplace and built-ins-- Second guessing my design
Comments (28)Thanks architect! Love that design. I considered a similar layout, but decided to go a different route. Mostly because moving the fireplace down the wall would result in 8-9' of cabinetry on one side. Maybe it would have looked ok, but I wasn't sold on that piece being so LONG. So unfortunately, at this point, fp stays. Womp, womp. Do you have thoughts on where the shelving should stop in relation to the mantel? Does just below seem odd to you? Will cutting the 10' tall wall exactly in half look off?...See MoreHelp me design my walk-in pantry
Comments (19)Karenseb, I knew what I wanted on the pantry shelves and measured for storage I have a fairly good idea of what I want to store in there, though it's been so long since we had a working kitchen, I may be mis-remembering. I made a list awhile ago: spices -- we have, and will always have, a zillion. I'm thinking I'll hang these on the back of the door, or on the wall to the left as you enter. I do have a drawer across from the cooktop that could possibly work (and would be more convenient), but right now I have that filled with placemats, paper napkins, kitchen linens. I suppose I could move those into the pantry instead. chip bags / snacks canned goods pasta sauce jars peanut butter & jelly jars cereal boxes (not many) oils & vinegars spice packets nuts & dried fruit bags (in basket or in a container) bags of dried beans (in basket or in a container) condiments pasta & other grains cracker boxes coffee station bev fridge diet coke cases bottled water case large bag of rice paper towels napkins coffee, filters extra tin foil extra plastic bags extra trash bags small appliances including: crockpot, rice cooker, food processor, toaster, hand mixer mops & brooms apron -- hanging from hook on wall step ladder (could be tucked away next to the furnace-- there's space.) I don't bake very often so I figure I'll keep flour in the freezer....See MoreHelp me design our new open Living & Dining room with built-ins!
Comments (2)Thanks Patricia for taking the time to read my post! I agree with the built-in banquette seating. My finance is pretty convinced that it's a great idea for big family dinners (which is funny since most meals we eat out OR eat in front of the TV since we live in a condo and it's only the 3 of us). As for the pictures, I took these with a wide angle lens, which unfortunately distorts the edges of the pictures (ie like a fisheye lens, but less severe). I took them like this to fit more of the room into a single snap shot. While the drawing isn't 100% to scale, it, for the most part it shows the correct scaling of the walls, nooks and crannies. We're mostly hoping to have general furniture layout suggestions to keep the room looking not awkward, with clean sight lines from walking up the stairs, out the patio and from the kitchen (far screen left in the diagram; it's cut off, but will be a full kitchen that has a pony-wall overlooking the stairs)....See MoreHelp with built-in design for a wall that is not the same depth
Comments (4)Here are alternatives for cabinets with tapered ends. The first has a corner unit on both ends, which may give you less storage space than you want. I've drawn 2 36" wide units, 18 inches deep, with two 18" corner units on each end. The second has 3 36" wide units with the 18" deep corner unit on the end near the doorway. The third has 3 36" wide x 18" deep units units with a fourth 36" wide tapering on a curve....See Morewi-sailorgirl
