Dining room advice: pics

You girls were a huge help to me w/ in choosing my breakfast nook curtains and I would appreciate your input (positive or negative) on my DR.

I bought a silk flower and I love it but think it's too tall. (you can see it in my pics) What do you girls think? they make a smaller one about half that height. Would that be more appropriate? Whatever I end up w/ I think I'll need a table runner. If I got the smaller one I could do two pretty chunky candle holders w/ candles on each side I guess.

Also I am thinking to order some curtains from JC Pennys but thought I'd run them past you girls first. Let me know what you all think. I also have no clue where they should be hung- above the arch? or between the arch and bottom window? The drapes will always be open and pushed to the side if that factors into anyone's decision.

I was attracted to your topic line- I've been a fan of pink ever since I had a nice rich retro- pink kitchen once. Y'know there is yucky bubblegum or pepto bismal pink, there is the girly pastel pink - and then there is the grown-up sophisticated pink, also known as coral, flamingo, tropical pink. Or the retro 1930s/1950s Lu-Ray pastels pink! There is a certain kind of Victorian rusty faded red that I am after for my kitchen - could also be classified as a pink I think... Sorry, can't think of what direction you might want to go, just felt like sharing my observations about PINK. It is a misunderstood, under appreciated color. You might try the decorating forum - they're very helpful there about choosing colors.

I think your design is a great starting point. Love all the plants you have going on. That ottoman doesn't fit the style very well, but I think a different ottoman could. Something more like the one in hollybar's first pic. An ikat patterned fabric would be great. Also, you'll notice that every inspo pic has bright white walls. Yours are very neutral, so they'll likely work, but your room might feel a bit different because of the color. I would avoid using lots of different colors, since boho tends to be very neutral. The pop of color on the ottoman is all you need. Try to keep the art fairly subdued, or very natural feeling. Love the white frames and mats in your design. Botanical prints could work well. Or maybe use more structural art pieces instead of prints. Look through all those inspo pics for ideas. Texture is super important to make boho work, especially since there's not a lot of color. The interest comes from the texture. Wood, leather, metal, knit are all great textures to introduce. Subtle patterns are good too. Get a very textural rug as a good base. Maybe sisal or more shaggy.

Once you have furniture in your space the chair rail will not be noticed on that side. It will not be the focal point. Your furnishings and artwork will be what people will see. Also, spaces that are completely balanced are not nearly as interesting as having a little asymmetry here and there imo.

That table is far too large for the room, sorry - I know you just bought it. Your room would lend itself better to a 54" to 60" round table. Suggest you put that table back on Facebook Marketplace and go that direction. Over-crowded dining rooms never look good.

Thanks for the link Loribee! I'll have to go check those out. The price certainly sounds great. :)

Would you do them above or below the arch. I googled and I see that people do them both ways, but I didn't know which way would be more visually appealing or if one method or the other is the decorating "norm".

What a pretty room! Love your ceiling. I think the floral arrangement is fine. You could still use candles on either side but I like the simplicity of the arrangement.

I like the arch showing so I would hang the drapes below it. Do you really need drapes? I think the window is so pretty as is.

I think the size of the flower arrangment is fine.
If you hung the drapes the height of the window it would be a more dramatic look than hanging them where the curved window starts. I think it would look nice if the room is large enough to handle that look.
How large is the room and how high is the ceiling?

A clear thin vase doesn't have enough presence to fill a dining table. If the table were set with dishes a thin vase would be fine - but too tall.

I would rather see the flowers coming out of a wide pot, maybe one with feet.

Thanks Lori. I was leaning towards hanging them at that height. It just seems "right" to me.

The floral arrangement is just lovely and I like the height. Your DR is beautiful! I love your ceiling.

I like the way Loribee hung her drapes with the arched window. I don't care for them hung over the top of arched windows with a straight rod. It just looks... wrong. If you want to hang them all the way to the top of the window, you can either do it with a curving rod like this...

... or you can do it on nails (and something covering them), hooks (and something covering them), or decorative knobs like this...

Something is bothering me, but it could just be the picture and how it translates on the computer. The sconces you have to either side of the china cabinet look to me to be much more informal than the china cabinet, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, I would like to see some more breaking up of that big expanse of red, with some pretty plates in a lighter color (I could see three vertical on each side of your pretty cabinet), and with some artwork with different colors in it. I'm just not crazy about the dark things on your dark wall. eBay has original paintings by artists at very reasonable prices, if you're interested in that. Gorgeous oils and watercolors.

Have you visited the Dining Rooms thread in our Gallery? You will find hundreds of beautiful dining room pix in there. I think you'd get a lot of wonderful ideas on how to accessorize your room. I have a thread about the gallery at the top of the list of threads, I think.

Hey...do you have a Big Lots, Tuesday Morning or Christmas Tree Shop nearby? Sometimes you can find nice drapes at GREAT prices there~

I guess our whole house is just an odd mix of formal and almost rustic pieces. I tend to like traditional furnishings but we've traveled a lot and that influences our choices as well. I think maybe you're right about something light looking better. Maybe I'll come across a pair of matching prints or other artwork I like. I really can see a bowl of fruit in there somewhere, but I'm not sure where. I like the plates idea, maybe I'll check into that.

We do have a Tuesday Morning and Big Lots. I go to BL pretty often just to snoop around. I haven't checked out TM though, I'll try to get around to that this week.

I ended up taking back the silk flowers. Something about them bothered my though I never really figured out exactly what it was. I guess I'll know the right thing when I see it- but buying things just take them back gets old after a while. I guess since I'm so new to this process trial and error is really the only way to go~ ;)
