Suggestions for a rich dark brown paint color?

Some of you may remember my post about painting our brick house. For the time being we are just trying to landscape and make some minor changes like the color of our shutters. I tried a deep plum/burgundy color and although I really liked it, it seemed too similar to our neighbor's maroon shutter color (I may use if for the front door though!). I don't want to go with a chocolate brown because I just don't like that particular color with my brick, but I'm wondering if there is a dark rich brown, think brown/black with maybe a purple undertone, out there that I should try? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I used BM Bittersweet Chocolate for my bathroom cabinets. It's almost black and some say it has a purple undertone.

That's true. I immediately noticed I forgot to mention it after I posted. My WS2000 is similar...such a unique vibrantly deep striking color that stands out amongst others, yet it still isn't what would call "bright". Such an odd array of shades of color from him. With such an color tone as WS2000 has, it is bound to make camera's weep and cry by the amount of trouble they have trying to capture it. I remember Patrick posting these pictures. These pictures are with a much higher quality camera and do an excellent job of capturing WS2000's shades of color. recommend a rich medium brown stain color

Straight grain with fine even texture,Relatively free of voids and knots. There's a kitchen picture over on hgtv forum that looks very much like the above picture but the color is BM Toasted Pecan--a bit more brownish red than Flowerpot. I like the shade lighter than TP, it's called Tuscany. We have a cherry pool table too, but those walls are SW Svelte Sage. I really would've liked a rust / terra cotta, but my Razorback crimson red colored items would've clashed with that color.

I’m following this post because I have the same issue with my living room — dark brown couch and very dark floors — brown overkill! Can I ask for more specific advice, if possible? Should my rug be mostly ivory, with tan accents? Or will the tan color bring in more “brown?” Should I paint the brown wooden top on my fireplace white to eliminate some of the brown in the room? BELOW: View from my entry foyer looking at living room. What can I place behind couch? The couch reclines, so it can’t be a sofa table. BELOW: 1. What color sideboard can I place under TV? 2. Benjamin Moore 'Mink' is a great dark, chocolate colour with no purple undertones!

BM Willow is also very popular.(Has some gray, I think in it though)

Here's a pic with Mink..back wall between curtains. (It's been re-painted off-white since...)

Behr Espresso Bean. I just painted my basement bathroom cabinet with this yesterday. It was just what I was looking for! A rich dark brown with no purple.

Lisa_mocha, the mink looks beautiful in your room I will definitely get a sample of that. You screen name indicates you know a lot about the color brown! ;-)

Kmcg85, I'll have to see if we have a Behr dealer nearby. The closest HD is about 45 minutes away!

Funcolors, we do have a SW store close by so I'll check out black bean.

I don't mind if the brown has a purple undertone to it actually. The purple toned color I chose earlier looks great with my brick, it's just too similar to a neighbor's burgundy shutter color.

I'll keep you posted as to how these other browns look. Thanks again!

Hi Kat,

Well...don't know that much about brown, but I have a Choc. Lab named Mocha:) My family room and living room actually filled with white and cream furniture. (Everyone thinks I'm crazy with a big, brown fur-baby!)Oh well...

Note that Mink is very dark ...a 'lighter' brown is Branchport Brown (not sure if there's purple undertones though!) I've also heard good things about Bittersweet Choc. as already mentioned-might be even darker than Mink.

BM Aura Wenge is a brown/black with a purple undertone.

Black Tea by Kilz at WalMart is a good very dark brown color. I just recommended it to a friend to paint a bookcase and it came out great.

I officially have 6 different colors on *parts* of shutters now! :) They range from purple/plum to olive green and other than the plum color none of them look good, in my opinion. I will look at all of these brown options tonight when I run out. I really love the look of BM wenge, and can't wait to see the others.

I'll post pictures to see what everyone thinks once I'm done with my sampling madness! When I sent my husband to the paint store yesterday to get some more samples, the guy who works there said, "oh I think I know who your wife is...she's still trying to pick a color?!" That's when you know you've gone over the edge! hehe
