Dark rich intense colored roses, zone 5's best?

All the roses in my garden are light to light mid range in color intensity. There is very little space left in the garden and before it is all eaten up I would like one rose that is a dark rich color with good fragrance. No Hybrid Teas, gallicas or monsters. A shrub, a climber or mini would fit nicely. Repeat bloom would be great. I don't trust the colors in catalogs or online. I trust in the field reports from the growers here. Thanks!

Hope for Humanity is an awesome dark red. Winnipeg parks is an awesome, well, it's always in the red sections, but I think it's hot pink- this is my FAVORITE rose of all of mine! They are both Parklands, repeat well. Winnipeg Parks has a fairly good fragrance - the Hope for Humanity can get tallish, but still a shrub!

For minis, I have santa claus and ruby ruby - both beautiful dark reds. And the staying power of the blooms is amazing! These are in pots, so I haul in and out.

Do you have any preference in color? I was just curious what you meant by a "dark" color or if you are referring to a "deep" color. Some of the austins like william shakespeare 2000 opens as a very rich, deep colored magenta. It definitely pops out at first, but then it "fades" off into a rich deep, purplish crimson. It has a wonderful old rose fragrance for me. People report it as disease resistant and mine has done fine, and is well mannered in growth as it doesn't get overly tall. It stays a mannerly 3x3 or 4x4. Right now mine is on the north side of my house and in part shade and it's doing great.

I'm from the Pacific Northwest too, and I've found that some varieties that promise the world but don't produce in our area (or have many problems). I've tried many of the varieties mentioned, and I'll list the ones that I've seen do well for the Northwest EVERY TIME. 1. Easy Going - Yellow - I can't believe I haven't seen this mentioned before! It transformed me from a so-so yellow rose lover to adoring, singing it's praises, rose lover. The fragrance is stop in your tracks worthy. And production...unbelievable, at least for our area! I actually had my husband cut off 1/3 of the bush (the bush had become HUGH), and gave that third to my neighbor. Now, 6 months later, I can't even tell it's been divided. My bush at this time has about 80 or so fuss-free blooms. My neighbor's has about 30 roses (she doesn't dead head, and generally ignores it). I see it constantly winning at rose shows, where it's identity is unknown till I check the hidden tag. The only caveat is that with thorns easy going it's not. But being in the Northwest, that might be of benefit, as the deer might stay away. It's reason I invested in a Waterford vase, roses like that deserve the best. Double Delight - Bi-colored red and white - I'll add my vote for this rose of beauty and aroma. Sheila's Perfume - Bi-colored red and yellow - Another beautiful, yet fragrant example. It's not as prolific as Easy Going, but maybe I expect too much? Ebb Tide - Purple - The most vibrant purple, I've seen. Fragrant, but short duration of bloom. I special ordered this, only to have it languish in the post office when I was called out of town when a family member was ill. By all rights it should have been dead, but it revived and is alive and well, it's that hardy. I have, or have had most of the others mentioned, Zephadrin Dauphin (pretty sure I spelled that wrong, sorry) I'd only recommend if you have a spot with a shade, and hate thorns. Angel Face, I found to be super color lavendar, and fragrant, but not too hardy. I'll add Lady Banks, as a scentimental favorite: I don't own it but my mother-in-law, who passed, did (a remarkable lady of great taste). The world's largest rose bush in Tombstone, AZ, is a Lady Banks. If you visit the bush in Tombstone, you'll be amazed, and the rose in your garden will bring back happy memories (I believe you can buy one right there, and have it mailed to your home). I wish I'd had one sent. My best advice for the Pacific Northwest rose lovers is to visit Portland's International Rose Test Garden during it's peak during July or August, if you can. It's truly a delight, but the garden will show you both new varieties and old favorities. You can see what exactly what you'd want in your garden and what will do well. Happy gardening!

I cut my teeth on the high maintenance, exhibition type roses of the 50's to 90's era and in the early 90's made a complete about face with going over to predominantly hybrid rugosas. Cardinal rule #1 - NO MORE SPRAYING! Although the hyb. rugosas are very iron clad, I am spreading my wings, incorporating more "showy" classes of roses, but maintaining my 'prime directive' of: no-spray (except for midge fly...a necessary evil if I want any flowers all season), continuous blooming, fragrant, and winter hardy roses. Here is my current in-bed list, most have multiple, 2-5, representatives in the rose bed, essentially an oblong island bed, a rather large one, about 3 roses deep across its narrower width. Quietness (5) Carefree Beauty (4) Marie Pavie (2) Marie Daly (3) Jacques Cartier (1) Schneekoppe* (2) *the only two surviving hy. rugosas after Henry Hudson* (1) the hybrid r. purge. Golden Unicorn (2) Innocensia (Kordes - 1) The bed has room for about 25 bushes if their spread is 2-3' each. The colors I prefer in roses are in the light range: pink, cream, white, pale orange, apricot, peach and yellow. I spend a lot of time after sunset often as late as in the early AM hours, weather permitting, praying, contemplating and relaxing outside near the rose bed. The light colored flowers stand out like beacons at night. I guess you can say I am one of the few persons who enjoys his roses in the dark almost as much as in broad daylight. Khalid: Your Michelangelo is stunning & gorgeous color-blend. LOVE THAT !! Port Sunlight (deep orange) and Molineux (yellow/orange) are known to be LOW in thorns & smaller & compact bush with little scent. Golden Celebration is wider-spaced large thorns. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.225184 If it has very large thorns but wider-spaced apart, and vigorous & big bush, it could be Crown Princess Mag. (medium fruity scent large climber with thick stem). Below is cluster of Crown Princess Mag. in June, I used sulfate of potash, resulting in cluster-blooming. Crown Princess starts deep orange-yellow, but fades to lighter yellow. But when I compare my CPM leaves to your "Golden Celebration", My CPM' leaf is bigger & darker & more elongated, versus roundish & smaller Golden Celebration or Teasing Georgia leaves. Bloom color changes, with high-phosphorus fertilizer or compost, blooms shift to the red-zone, resulting in apricot/orange, rather than yellow. Since I used sulfate of potash (high potassium) my CPM is yellowish, rather than deep orange. CAUTION: sulfate of potash, anything high in potassium tend to BLEACH blooms. One fall I put too much sulfate of potash on W.S. 2000 and the blooms became whitish, rather than deep red/purple. UP the potassium, you'll lower phosphorus (needed to shift bloom to red-zone). Thanks so much, Judy and Lisa. I was under the impression that Palatine would have the new listing of roses and photos that they will be selling next year, and will begin taking orders at that time (Sept 12). I have read here that it's possible some new Tantau roses will be for sale. I think it was Cynthia (Nippstress) that mentioned this because she had talked with the owners of Palatine. I checked Palatine's site a few days ago, and the old listings were still up. Last year they sold AL for a brief time, and then her photo disappeared from the listings. I don't know what that was all about. I wouldn't mind having another Augusta myself. I tried Hortico several days ago, too, and the whole site was down as far as I could tell. Hortico is where I bought my Augusta several years ago. We'll just have to keep looking, I guess. Diane

We should probably add that red is hard to photograph correctly. Those Shakespeare 2000 pics at photobucket are much too "pink"--my Shakespeare 2000 is a much deeper, richer red. As it ages and turns kinda purplish, it picks up some dark magenta tones, but mine definitely do not have that hot pink color shown in some of those pics.

I love my WS 2000--it would be a good choice.

That's true. I immediately noticed I forgot to mention it after I posted. My WS2000 is similar...such a unique vibrantly deep striking color that stands out amongst others, yet it still isn't what would call "bright". Such an odd array of shades of color from him. With such an color tone as WS2000 has, it is bound to make camera's weep and cry by the amount of trouble they have trying to capture it.

I remember Patrick posting these pictures. These pictures are with a much higher quality camera and do an excellent job of capturing WS2000's shades of color. You can scroll to the next and previous photos up top to view the bloom and various shades.

Lavaglut is the perfect solution. It is intensely deep red, small so it wouldn't take a lot of room. It seems to be in bloom constantly partly because the flowers last a long time. It is also called Intrigue.

I should have mentioned that there are two roses called Intrigue. One by Warriner and Lavaglut which also goes by that name. Lavaglut is more a very dark, deep red. Apparently the other Intrigue is more toward the purple. I've never seeen that one.

My list is well started. I may have to squeeze another space in for more then one. Jeffcat, thank you, the WS 2000 is beautiful. I bookmarked the site from Patrick for later drooling. Now to run and check out the other suggestions. I'll be back.
