Tin-look wallpaper in bathroom

In conversation with my sister in law, I mentioned how I wish I could cover the plain white non-descript tile around my tub in our master bath and she suggested the tin-look paintable wallpaper. I have it on the ceiling in my foyer and love it there but I've never seen it used around a tub. I keep visualizing it and think I may kinda like the idea. I know people use it as backsplashes in kitchens, so I think it would work ok. Plus we NEVER use the tub--wish I didn't even have it--and since the shower is separate and totally enclosed, moisture/steam are not concerns to me. What do you think? Tacky? Could look good? The thing I keep telling myself is that only my husband and I see/use that bath so the worst that could happen is that I do it and then take it down if it's a disaster. Thanks!

On kitchen backsplashes what you are seeing is a product called Facade. I think it is plastic. I have wallpaper in my bathroom, but not over tile. I do not think you should do anything to tile but leave it alone or remove it. All else will be a big mess down the road. I do have paintable on my kitchen walls and love it too. Maybe do somthing with the rest of the bathroom to jazz it up a bit? What are the walls like now?

Thanks, PTAmom. You're absolutely right--leave it alone. I got up early and went to Lowe's. The sales associate was kind enough to open a roll of the paper and cut off a sizable piece for my experiment although she looked at me like I had 3 heads when I told her what I was doing. Anyway, long story short...I came home, stuck the paper over the tile and immediately hated it. I think I got caught up in a quick fix on the cheap and that's what it was looking like. I will say this, though, I think it could look ok if the tile were removed and I had a more substantial product than paper. Oh well, nothing ventured-nothing gained.

Holly Kay you are too nice, as usual :-) I did have a ton of input but I chose from the selections he provided. Except he did veto me completely over the sofas.....I wanted green sofas and he actually REFUSED to work on the project further if I insisted on them. We had a very long conversation / argument over this, and the next day I deferred to his judgment. He had been right in the past about other things, so I went with his experience and he was absolutely right. My mother and SIL were not at all surprised, as we have a saying, "L___ is always right," and he proved it yet again in this instance. Luckily he doesn't "double dip" and charge for time on top of his markup when ordering furniture, so our arguments were at least free!

If the room isn't that big, what about a stencil? Some of them are quite amazing these days, and the pattern does not look that difficult? Then you can get the perfect color you want. Hi Sochi and Kristin, gorgeous wallpaper projects! I am in correspondence with several Italian fiber glass wallpaper suppliers now and all of them have different waterproofing methods. The main issue I am finding is that the substrate needs to be white in color and smooth. Sochi mentioned the contractor used Schluter KERDI-BOARD but it is orange, so how did you eventually get it white? Krisitin what did your contractor do for substrate? What products were used to waterproof the wall before the application of the glue, wallpaper and sealants? My other concern is that the drywall or cement board (depending on what to use) has to sit on top of my shower pan so I fear it will absorb water is not properly waterproofed. Any guidelines and suggestions will be highly appreciated. Alex

I love wallpaper in bathrooms but not this wallpaper. I say remove it. Most people have no imagination. So the wallpaper may just make them not see that is actually a nice bathroom. Sometimes removing it is a pain, sometimes it comes down easy. But people think it's hard so don't want to tackle it. Do it for them and paint it something that goes with the permanent fixtures of the room. If it is a vinyl as most bathroom, the top will come down in one piece. Then just spray with water to saturate the paper that's left over and remove. It will take time It needs to be wet. Beyond that remove the valance and your jewelry hooks. it will look so much better and appeal to more people. Since the glass is frosted you can remove the shutters or leave them for added privacy. They would be something a new owner could easily remove.

If you go that route you could use the plastic ceiling tiles that look like tin. They come in larger sheets than the backsplash type. Formica glue and caulk. Just a thought. It's always fun to conjure up design ideas.
