Negative event, silver lining with SD36

I posted last week that SD36' job was at risk due to contract problems with her firm and major client due to no fault of her own. I suggested and both agreed, that if SD loses her job today, this week that she goes to work with DH. They are both happy with this idea, he needs the help and she need the work so I'm happy.

The most positive part of this negative event is that since I listened without a whole lot of judgement to SD36's professional woes, mostly because I've experienced them myself and DH, self-employed for 25 years and BM, a nurse for one hospital almost as long, have never lived any of this, SD is sharing with me!!! I know you know how major this is! . They, DH and BM, couldn't stop talking about what she was losing on salary etc like it was her fault. They were very young parents so for SD to stumble after years of acheivement reflects on them they think. Durr, read a newspaper. So SD36 is relieved by little old Me who has been there. BY ME, the formerly evil SM. I'm not happy at all that her job is at risk but it looks like she's got something else lined up already, YAY. But that I was the ONLY one who didn't come at her judgementally including DH and BM and in fact, am the only one who has been in her position for real and listened without throwing in her face how much she was losing in salary, perks and so on since I have been there personally and it has been a good thing for our relationship. If her new job doesn't land, she'll work for DH, my idea, for a bit. If her new job through contacts does land, she's using my references to land it. I am glad to do it for her.

Is that an evil stepmom? Dad's kid vs. Mom's kid's? It just all depends on the individuals!!!!!!!

I'm happy that your SD confided in you. And I think she did so because you have a good heart, and she knows you genuinely care for her AND respect her as an individual.

It's a shame her parents had to view her job insecurity as something personal. In this economy, it seems almost no one is 100% safe.

Fingers crossed your SD's career goes in the direction she wants.

Thanks lovehadley. SD36 did lose her big job and DH has hired her to work for him part-time at his office.

I hope that now that she will be around a lot more that things can continue to grow between her, DS7 and me. DH had a pretty big injury last week, and SD kept DS overnight while we were at the hospital and took him to the school bus stop in the morning. In most families this would be no big deal but with my husband's family and our history I was thrilled!

Putz SS30 didn't even call his dad until almost a week later, actually his GF called, with a weak excuse about the cell phone was broken, they just heard from SD......uggg.

I must agree with Terrene as well on the lawn subject. Green lawns, pretty lawns are well overrated. There are not worth the effort to keep them green and the cost of water is absurd. If I'm spending money to water something, then it's going to be on my flower gardens, my shrubs, not moving a sprinkler to keep a pretty green lawn. Those yards around me that have that beautiful green lawn either have a front yard that's fully shaded with trees or the lawn companies are doing the work and pouring enough pesticide on the lawns to kill a horse. Thank goodness they are on the other end of the street. The next door neighbors moved thank goodness, (that's a whole other story) and they took their lawn company with them. Amazing, now that they are gone, my yard is full of all kinds of beneficial insects and bees of all kinds. The new neighbors use nothing but a lawn mower on their lawn. As for a silver lining, well, it's easier to dig up more of the lousy lawn I have to make new flower beds and even the weeds are doing well. Fran

One could only know what type of equipment would be required to correct the problems identified by comprehensive tests. ummm let us back up here. First, I did say that I hate the word stepmom or step whatever... but I DID NOT say that I told the kids that they couldnt call me step mom. FYI They call me L_. And, if you reread my post I am the one that told the kids not to call me mom and to respect BM's feelings. My point, obviously completely missed by you, was that I dislike the word because of how people view steps in general.... I thought the reference to Cinderella made that quite clear. BM and myself are from the same area... south but not THE south. The whole Ms. thing was just a way for her to create a seperation between myself and the kids... like when the kids were asking how my aunts and uncles became my aunts and uncles. I told them that they were brothers and sisters of my dad. They were confused because BM and DH had a family friend that the kids called Aunt and Uncle. I told them that they werent really their Aunt and Unlce that they were a really close family friend and so they called them Aunt and Uncle. Bm chose to tell the kids that I have no idea what I was talking about and knew nothing about her family. Not her family, infact friends with DH before he even met BM...but whatever... those were rocky years. She would get angry with the kids and demand that they say Ms._ It got to be ridiculous after a while... especially when she was making this demand the one or two times a month she was seeing the kids at the time. The kids would get confused and not know what to say. So, it was time to squash it. The Ms. before addressing an adult was always DH's rule for the kids when talking to someone outside of family, it was a way of her digging in a thorn.

6 1/2 DS excluded from bday party by SD

Hi All, thought I would give an update on the birthday party flaps. So, I extend invitations to SS29 and SGS 8 1/2 to DS7's (he's now 7 hurray!) birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese's last Saturday. DS7 chose the guests, short list including his 1/2 brother SS29 and SGS 8 1/2 and a few other kids friends. SS29's girlfriend, mother of his children, common law wife, calls and says they don't have bus/train fare to come! Nothing new but still a lot of nerve. As they have moved out to the desert, picking them up has become even more of an inconvinience. BUT, for the sake of DS7's birthday, DH does drive to pick up the crew from the desert. He gets there, then gf announces that the baby, SGS 2 1/2, is also coming to be cared for by DD36. Long story short, the crew shows up at Chuck E. Cheese courtesy of DH. Have not eaten, no gifts, dirty clothes it was unbelievable. SS29 spends the whole time playing with SGS 8 1/2, spends no time with my son, the one who invited him, DS7 whose feelings are hurt by this. SD 36 shows up with two more uninvited cousins from BM's side of the family but at least she pays for their play tokens. I won't continue the blow by tacky blow except, Because they live so far, we invited them all, SS29 included, to spend the night at our house, have a nice brunch and take them home. I get home with the balloons and gifts, SS29 has split, taken the bus for which he had supposedly no money to his mother's house to collect some items and basically dumped his kids on us to take care of over the weekend! No clothes, toiletries, no diapers or diaper stuff for the baby! I run down to Wal-Mart to buy pjs, Pull-Ups, diaper cream and a sippy cup. This time though, I let DH handle his people. I went on to church and brunch with my friends the next day after setting the kids up with some outdor games. Did not cook for them and put the Wal-Mart receipt on the counter. By the time I came back, he had insisted that his son, SS29 meet him at the train station to pick up his kids and take them back to the boondocks. If you want a nice LOL, SGS 8 1/2 left his library book at our house. SS29's gf called me and asked that I overnight it to her so it wouldn't be late. It took me a minute to collect myself from her gall. I told her I would pass it on to SD36 who could pass it on to BM, the grandmother, who could pass it on to them. Haven't heard from her since! Geez, they got a bag of new pj's, clothes, diapers, toiletries and fresh toothbrushes, I thought that was pretty good swag for some unexpected and not entirely welcome guests! Anyway, my son enjoyed his birthday admist all of the silly drama. The 2nd party planned at SD36 has been nixed.

I am so glad that she was able to lean on you and you were able to be there for her. This may be the beginning of a wonderful change in your relationship :)

So far so good. It's fun talking to SD36 every day now. We'll see how it goes.

Has it ever crossed your mind that your DH was afraid to employ your SD until you gave "permission"?

As much as you are so intend on giving yourself kudos, your DH built the business, not you.

well atleast he asked her about a decision that would/could effect both of them. Thats what good hubby's do consult not just make decision and let SM deal with the aftermath.

Hope he is feeling better LA :)

SD36 has worked for DH at his business a couple of times in the past. Also, in addition to her now gone job, she has a side business and DH throws work her way whenever he can. The idea of "Permission" from me is just plain loco, so no, it never occured to me.

This time around though, money at his business is tight like everywhere else, he was concerned about how much pay she would want/need coming off of her high paying job, the differences in their work styles (not good or bad but he's an entreprenuer and she's a corporate type) and some concerns about hiring her back again. In the past, when SD worked for DH, she told BM some confidential things about DH's business and it was a big deal. Some other things happened too as they will with any family member. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then.

Which is what I told him when I suggested he hire her again since she is out of work. I only gave an idea and some encouragement given the history, they talked, worked it out and now it's working out. He wasn't thinking about hiring her again to work directly for him, just to keep sending her referrals for her side business which is not enough right now.

So...Kudos...kudos...kudos...that is all.
