MOP backsplash in, walls painted, all done w/ real pics soon

Whew. It's over. Took way longer than it was supposed to, but after a massive paint fest on Memorial Day to get the crown caulked and touched up and the walls painted, we're all finished. I'll take "real" pictures this weekend, but here's a quick cell phone shot of my favorite thing in the kitchen: the mother of pearl backsplash. This is where it all started for me and every decision hinged from it. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

This is a pic I snapped while the grout was still drying. I can't wait to show you the rest.

I'm not seeing a current picture witht he sink -- just the one with the paper down on the wood which I understand to be before use. That wall looks like it has a raw end of drywall, not a side that is finished (paper or whatever) or maybe even no drywall. It looks like they tried to smooth joint compound in there, either by itself over your studs and built up or over something less than a full side of finished drywall. Joint compound will turn to mud (that's what they call it when it's wet -- hence the verb to "mud" the walls) and dissolve away if it gets wet. Paint will only seal the surface, and if water gets behind it -- well, I dare say it is probably worse than damp sheetrock, which is worse than damp green board. You say they had to sheer away your window sill. Did that sill come below the window too? I don't think you've got clean drywall there. I think you've got a really poor job of mudding and an even worse job of sealing the joint. That's my guess.

Ooooh, you have me a little worried. I am planning a white on white kitchen...but back to the topic at hand. No I definitely don't think a lip of a backsplash is at all unfinished. In fact, i think most houses just have a lip? I wonder if the wall of a BS is a new thing. In fact i just took a quick look at property listings (no I am not a realtor, haha) and the 3 houses I clicked on (close to a million$) all had a lip of a backsplash. I think it is personal preference. And your right it is a dust catcher=). but better to have dust than me rub off my wall every time I wipe my counters down. (good paint may well solve that dilemma) but I do think that it looks naked with nothing. We cook alot ( and I am messy) so I have to have something behind my stove...and personally i do like the full wall of backsplash. If you have soapstone, that may break up the white enough to not make it so stark. You could possibly consider the lip of soapstone and then tile above that....? Best of luck

Hi sstrazisar, I feel your pain when you have a less than standard cabinet layout it is very difficult to decide on a tile layout. Remember that the three dimensional space experience, and the ability to view every perspective of your space, is your and yours alone. What looks good in a flat photo and what looks and feels right in your home from every angle has to be your decision. I will cast the uncommon vote. If your kitchen was my kitchen I would possibly tile only behind the stove, nothing else on that wall at all. I would tile under the peninsula ledge too. I think that would look very nice. If there was a gap between the back of the counter and the wall on the stove wall I would do a very minimal treatment there. I like how the negative space of the painted wall makes it all pop. I also firmly believe in leaving room for art. Here is my thread about where to run the backsplash, it gets installed next week- so excited. I'm not sure how I came across this post, I think it was displayed on the right side and I clicked on it being intrigued by the tile making. I was at one time interested in working with papercrete and hypertufa. But after enlisting my brother, who wasn't as enthusiastic, and my niece, who poured cement down my laundry room sink, which original to the house had lasted 70 years, and ruining three blenders, my interest waned. True to form, if I come upon difficulty in a project, I think of it as a sign for me not to continue. And really, after all these years of trying various crafts that result in crap, I should know better. I also should have known better than to ask my brother, who always says it can't be done to any of my unique design ideas. And I should have known better than to ask my niece, who once stayed up all night before having to drive to LA for an art show, cutting mat after mat after measuring once, twice, sometimes ten times, but always coming out with the wrong size. I think we both have math dyslexia. I should video us trying anything crafty to see where we go wrong. I think both of us having ADHD might have something to do with it. Sorry for the backstory and run on sentences. So, I just wanted to see if you continued with your venture. And to say sorry for whatever tragedy occurred to cause you to have to move to Florida. Not that there is anything wrong with Florida, but it isn't Panama. Which is one of my favorite places in the western hemisphere. I hope no one is upset that I brought up a seven year old post.

*LOVE IT*. I picked out my MOP as the first element of my bathroom remodel. We just finished out bathroom up too.
Love your kitchen backsplash. I would be interested to hear your source, and how your tiler went about attaching it to the wall. Mine was not thrilled with the thickness (thin) of the tile... but we put ours in the shower. He did a fine job; as yours looks great too!

So gorgeous! And I'm so excited since I chose my MOP first and planned the rest of the kitchen around it too! I got the mini bricks and have a feature behind the stove that I'm excited about. It is wonderful to see it in a real kitchen instead of a box!

Can I say that this is my all time favorite backsplash? Even better than my own full glass BS ;)

Thanks for the nice comments, all. I hope to take pics tomorrow and get them up Monday.

@jam sf we actually ordered it through a tile store in Key West ( nowhere near us, long story) but I have seen similiar tile online, including at Amazon. I'm sure there are other patterns as I've seen some on this board, but I never looked into it because I knew I wanted the 1-inch mosiac.

@willemsen: we used Bright White. We did a sample of Alabaster but felt it made the tile look pinkish. I was worried that the bright white would be too white, but we're thrilled with the final look.

And yep, it does sparkle with the UCLs on. :) more to come, I promise.

Your backsplash looks fabulous! But of course I'm biased, since I also did a MOP backsplash with white cabinets. :)
