Bought AS Chalk Paint (Old Ochre) and Wax

I bought a quart of Old Ochre and container of clear wax.

If anyone has any words of wisdom to share about using these products, now would be a good time to do so! :)

Of course, I'm seconding guessing myself on whether or not I should have gotten the dark wax for a more aged look.

Since you use the dark wax only after you've coated with clear, you have time to decide.

The waxing is really simple too. Just brush it on, I think it would be pretty hard to mess up too. The clear wax just makes the color a little richer and the colored wax just adds another depth of dimension. If I had one tip, it would be to apply the clear wax liberally (the paint seems to suck it up), and the colored wax sparingly. A little goes a loooong way! Nanny, Were you thinking of doing any waxing, or just a straight chalk paint finish? I remember when you painted the kitchen. Your colors are very clean and don't have any aging or muddy effect to them. Is that something you would want to introduce through a wax? I always wax pieces that I do in chalk paint. I'd be tempted to use two colors on your hutch. A lighter one for the inside behind the glass doors, and use that same color in the back of the open area where you have the three plates lined up. Not that you are limited to Annie Sloan chalk paints, but I have linked their color chart below. Here is a link to some furniture painted in her chalk paint, which may give you ideas. In the 5th row down, the center bombe' chest which retains its stained top might be a nice color for you, with a creamy white inside. hi Tina, yes, I'm familiar with regular milk paint; I used it for a number of projects a few years back. Love the stuff! Love that matte chalky tactile finish, too. If one can apply this Sloan chalk paint on top of other finishes, sounds like it's different from milk paint in that it has some kind of latex or acrylic additives. I know they market an acrylic binder that can be added to regular ole milk paint to achieve the same kind of coverage. But that must make it a bit more like a regular paint, and I have to say I'm rather fond of the unique way milk paint can be thinned as desired for that slightly see-through washed wood effect. Great tip on the ammonia as remover, cyn47, thanks! We tried just about everything to get 100-year-old milk paint off our kitchen woodwork in former house; can't recall if we tried ammonia. We finally resorted to a commercial preparation that I thought was more pricey than it was worth. At least we have established a definitive connection between felines and chalk/milk paint. As my contribution towards minimizing general grumpiness, here's a shot of my kitty on one of my old milk-paint projects. Well, at least his ears:

Am finding this interesting as to ease of use and process. May be off topic, but I have always painted old furniture and even did the FP surround with acrylic craft paint. Buy the big bottles on sale, sometimes mix for a specific color wanted. The chalk paint almost looks/reads to be close to acrylic craft paint. Acrylic goes on beautifully and in one coat and goes a long way. I age items with regular stain (Minwax,etc). They have all held up well. I'd love to get the formula for chalk and acrylic craft paint to see a comparison. Enjoying the pics, love to see more of the great results. Amazing how good your projects turn out.

I used the dark AFTER the clear.. and just a tiny bit of the dark.. it goes A LONG WAYS! Post pictures!

I painted a pair of antique nightstands with AS chalk paint. I used Duck Egg Blue and Old White. Then, I waxed with the clear first, followed by just a bit of the dark. As someone else mentioned, a little goes a long way with the dark. I wanted an aged look, though.

The great thing about AS chalk paint is that it covers so well. I didn't have to prime or anything, although, I did put on a couple coats. The paint does thicken quickly when exposed to air, so you can add a little water to achieve the desired consistency, if needed. I used the round AS brushes for the wax, and I really liked them. If after applying the clear wax, you choose to go ahead with some dark wax, you may need to apply more clear wax first, so that the dark goes on more sparingly. Also, a rag with some clear wax on it will help remove excess dark wax, if you go in that direction. When all is said and done, you really can't mess up anything so much that you wouldn't be able to fix it.

Here are a couple of pieces painted in old ochre. I am loving this color. I think it's a great light neutral without being white.

Bird - yes, it is full strength Duck Egg Blue. I LOVE the Old Ochre too, as I typically prefer creamy to stark whites.

I can't wait to start painting, but it will have to wait for a while. One of my daughters just had a beautiful baby girl yesterday!

I almost bought the old white, but then took a sample of old ochre outside and away from the awful store lighting, and I immediately fell in love with this color.

I think I'm going to eventually paint several pieces in this color, with a couple of other pieces in accent colors. I'm going for a french influenced cottage look.
