backsplash with Giallo Ornamental tips?

I have a traditional kitchen, with cherry nutmeg cabinets and Giallo Ornamental granite - the darker version. My floor is a light beige 13" ceramic tile. Any suggestions on a tile backsplash would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

(I've had no luck putting up a pic.)

Sorry to hear that posting pics hasn't worked--it would definitely help! I haven't tried yet, but I hope I can post some pics of my finished kitchen, which may have similar colors.

I have giallo ornamental, but I don't know if it would be considered the "darker" version. It has dark brown, a little black and russet colors along with the lighter cream colors. My cabinets are cherry stained sienna with an ebony glaze--they are a medium-to-light cherry. My floor is probably darker than yours with carmel, taupe and cream as the primary colors in a random variation 20" tile.

I put in a subway backsplash in matte biscuit, traditional running bond pattern. If I had more time, creative energy, and money I would have added a bit of glass tile as an accent. But the simple subway sits there quietly and works well for my needs. I just don't like bold backsplashes--they compete too much with granite.

I have the darker giallo, white cabinets, and I used Grazia Rixi subway in crema crackle. They are a machine made tile that looks handmade in that there is an uneveness to them when installed. The cracklemakes it more interesting. The tile matches the cream in the granite.

I really like the glass blocks, and think a 1x1 mosaic tile of glass or stone would look great. The squares of the 1x1 mosaic would repeat the squares of the glass blocks. I love Oceanside Glasstiles in the Geologie and Tessera series, they would look great in your kitchen. I don't think you're as limited as you think...I can visualize a lot of different styles in there. You might check out Stone & Pewter Accents Falling Water, Jeffrey Court Fire and Ice or Raindrops. Gorgeous cabinets, by the way...and Giallo Ornamental Granite will look wonderful.

Thanks Suzienj - The backsplash is mainly 3 x 6 tumbled marble (purchased at Lowes). I love it. I've been meaning to get an actual post of my kitchen done, but haven't gotten to it yet. I promise I will soon. We just moved in 2 weeks ago and I was hoping to get new pictures, but haven't yet. Feel free to ask if you have other questions about it. Here's a few pictures I posted in a previous thread. I tried to find the thread, but wonder if it didn't drop off. It was worded with a question like "what makes your kitchen pop," or something like that. It was a great thread, but I can't find it. Sorry, maybe someone else can find it.

Hey Techmom, Thanks for the input. From what I've read I think you're right. The tumbled marble is pretty holy and those will be filled with grout. The honed marbled that you speak of is the smooth travertine I mentioned above. I believe it's basically the same stone as the tumbled version except they polish it to give it the sharp edges and smooth surfaces then fill all the holes with epoxy. Nice thing about those is you can get really thin grout lines. A site I read said with the honed version you can use 1/16 grout while the tumbled version the grout will be more like 1/2.

Thanks for the info! No pics yet. I will have to see if I can find my camera. But the areas look much darker than the rest of the granite. It has the same splashes of black etc that the rest of the granite does, but the background color (for lack of a better word) is darker, so these areas look like a darker blotch. I do have to have someone come out to make a seam smoother, so I will add this to the list I guess. Encouraging to know that it may be an easy fix. Keeping my fingers crossed :) Abbey
