Honestly walkin, I was going to reply to your post 45 minutes ago and started 'browsing' the Ebay seller's other items and all his feedback including looking at what his buyers had bought from him. Yeesh!

I'm a fan of Art Deco and love burled wood. I much prefer the more expensive(of course)set. Love the lines and the differences between the two pieces. Don't much care for the waterfall design you see in most burled wood of that age and these don't have that.

Being a chicken when it comes to buying used furniture from Ebay myself, I marvel at what 'finds' other people end up with.

We also have a longer, narrow master bedroom and ran into your predicament with nightstands. They had to be somewhat narrow. Have you seen the Julia nightstands from Pottery Barn? I know it's Pottery Barn but they were nice and because they're round, they might soften the angular look of the bed with the longer look of your bedroom. Just a thought...

I knew I'd seen this nightstand somewhere else for less so I checked a couple places online and found the one below at Wal Mart. It's a bit smaller, but of solid beechwood. PBs is solid poplar and veneer over MDF. It's two and two thirds inches wider and five and a half inches taller, but also one hundred and thirty dollars more each. You do save thirty dollars if you buy the pair at PB. Still a hundred dollars more. If you need the height it could be worth it.

PS. I forgot to add that if you want a modern look than art deco is not that style to look at. I love it, but personally I don't think it would complement your bed. More like fight with it. Sorry. :(

What look do you want for the room overall? Do you need storage in the bedside tables, or is it more about the top surface as a place to put things?

I love the two sets you showed, but not with your bed. What about something like this? It has the vertical bars that echo the panels on the bed, and is 20" wide, and comes in lots of different finishes. The glass will help make it feel less crowded in the room, too.

Parma, Babs, Justgotabme, Les: thank you so much for responding. DH seems entirely unfazed by this issue, and I have felt vaguely nuts -- like I'm the only kook who's bothered by our lack of aesthetic unity. It's such a relief to talk about it with someone, and to get such good suggestions.

So. To answer some questions: yes, we need storage. A place to close away our stuff, out of sight, is always good. The look I'd like for the room: clean. I'd like to surround the bed, which I see as on the traditional side, with more streamlined/modern accessories and other furnishings.

For inspiration, I have a bedside lamp I really like, from the Thomas O'Brien line for Target, which isn't on their website anymore. It's sort of close to this, with a wider, rectangular base:

Thanks for taking the time to post links to other nightstands: really appreciated. I can see what you mean about the fabulous deco pieces fighting with the bed, rather than complementing it. And, although I'm not usually matchy-matchy, I'd like to find a dresser that works with both the bed and nightstands, and the Deco nightstands would probably make that impossible, no?

I like the Julia PB nightstand and the Walmart knockoff, but they're not contemporary in line, I don't think -- unless I'm missing something? Les, I love your suggestion: you're completely right about the bars and the glass. But it doesn't have storage, and I don't think it's quite the look I'm going for.

These are all from Wal Mart.com listed under living side/end tables. The first actually has a large file drawer so it would hold quite a bit. The next one I love since it could be easily made with a table saw and solid wood from Ho De. The is doable if you're good with math. None of these are made of wood. But even the first one could be made just from the discription, a table saw and the hardware. It has the best closed storage, but I added the other two just incase you didn't mind open storage.
