Display Garden--Final update before the pictures
Comments (10)These last minute changes seem to be nature of the beast :-) Although my garden show entry is only a container display rather than a fantasy garden, it still suffers from the same 11th hour alterations. Just moments before the truck was to be loaded with this and the materials for two other vignette displays, we had to make a plant substitution. A mature Corokia cotoneaster (wire bush) that was the focal point of one container because of its very stark, architectural presence was deemed to look a little too "dead". If one is at all familiar with this shrub, that's pretty much its normal winter appearance but it was felt that the general gardening public may not realize this and wonder why we would include a dead plant as part of our competition display! And we elected to use Irish moss for the carpet that grounded the 5 various sized containers. The 20 flats were grown on for us by a local wholesaler with heat to encourage some rich, lush growth in winter. They got just a little too "hairy" with this process and we had to mow them all with scissors to get the right look. The good news is the Edgeworthia that anchors one of the other containers is at just the perfect bloom stage and the fragrance is enchanting! The show opens here this Wednesday....See MoreHelp me with Party Ideas for Senior Citizen's B'day party
Comments (4)When my mother turned 70, we gave her a surprise party and wrote and performed a little musical of her life. She definitely loved that! But our family is into stuff like that. Yours may be more into art, writing, etc. For my 50th birthday, my husband contacted everyone he could think of and asked them to contribute a little anecdote for an album. He put photos in the back. I adore it. I recently did a "this is your life" slide show for a party honoring someone. Her family gave me photos. But in addition to the real photos from her life, we put in lots of downloaded photos with her face photoshopped in (always the same photo of her face, and always just a little too large). For example, when the narration was about her meeting and marrying her husband, there were a few of the two of them together, and then her with Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Homer Simpson, King Kong ... etc. It was really funny to think of things; she is a VERY refined and elegant lady, and we had her getting a tattoo, pole dancing, in a motorcycle gang, on a Tabloid cover, in the Sopranos -- like that. What made it funny was that we kept the narration perfectly straight and played very formal music behind it. It was very well received, and the guest of honor loved it. Do you think your mom might like something like one of these ideas? I, too, think I would prefer something like that to making the guests play games. I think it is so nice of you to make a party for your mother. You don't need to "program" every minute with games, though -- your mom's friends will enjoy socializing with each other....See MoreRally Sign: Seniors + Seniors For Gun Control
Comments (40)Many innocent lives have been lost because of an irrational fear that if you give an inch on safe gun laws, the government will take a mile and come for your guns. This is why we do nothing. It's irrational when people buy guns and more guns to protect themselves from government. Try protecting yourself with a gun from a government intent on taking your guns. Have you ever watched the NRA ads featuring Dana Loesch? It's pure irrational fear-mongering. The NRA has identified their enemies and they are liberals, journalists, public school teachers, and Hollywood. Oh, and Obama, of course. This ad is delivering a very dangerous and frightening message: Dana Loesch NRA Ad The fear that guns will ever be outlawed is an extremist view, as is the belief that we will ever outlaw guns....See MoreGift ideas for senior care staff?
Comments (22)Dee, I agree with you about the CNA’s. They are the ones who have the most direct contact with the patients - bathing, bed changes , diaper changes, feeding, etc. My mom was extremely sick during the last three months of her life and I spent a lot of time in her room at the wonderful skilled nursing home and was so impressed with the care she was given by the CNA’s. They are low paid and appreciated the gift cards. I knew they were struggling with their own family shopping so I gave Amazon gift cards and Walmart cards because I knew that was where they did the bulk of their Christmas shopping. This is not about gifts, but I always had to stay with her when she was in the hospital as she was deaf and could not use the call button. I never called for help if it was something I could do for her. One time she was hospitalized and I was sitting in her room on a Sunday morning, reading the paper. A nurse or aid (don’t remember exactly) came in to give her her bath and asked me to leave the room, almost with an attitude. She was shocked when I told her I would be happy to give her bath since I was not doing anything useful. I had to keep reassuring her that I did not mind doing this and I know she was grateful as they seemed to be short staffed that morning....See Moreroarah
