I like the rectangle island much better too. It may be a bit more expensive than keeping the current footprint, but if you're going to be spending anything you may as well get something really functional. You can see about reusing things like cabinet doors, drawer fronts and end panels even if you need some new base cabinet boxes. I also like where GreenD shows the fridge (near the dining area). As mentioned above, you can use a laptop anywhere so I'd also skip the desk (they tend to be clutter magnets) and just make sure you have some outlets in your island. Regarding the floor: if you like the current tile but can't find an exact match to fill in any new spaces, you could consider doing a nicely coordinating pattern just in the space between your island and the permimeter cabinets. (And around the far side of the island if necessary but it doesn't look like you would need any new tile and that side.) I know tiles can get expensive even for a small area, but if you shop around and get creative you create something you like for a great price. lascatx You have hit the nail on the head. It is the fridge location that is irking me. I have thought of locating it on the sink wall where you suggest, but I want to store my dishes in those drawers and glasses and mugs in that upper. I want to put my fabulous coffee machines on the counter there. I have been toying with locating the fridge opposite the island and cutting my clearances down to 38" either side of the island. I can't move the fridge any further back because there is a strucural post there. It is the rectangle with the x through it. If I get the fridge off the range wall, I can center the range and move the micro to the range wall.Then I can set up a more pleasing cabinet arrangement. Whaddya think?

I'm confused by your questions -- why would you lose counter space on either side of the cooktop? -- which probably means you were confused by my suggestion, so here goes another try. (1) Keep the DO and hutch on the same wall. (2) Drywall the corner 2'X2' space and make a closet opening into the hallway (who doesn't need an extra closet?) (3) Put the double ovens next to the drywalled closet on the same wall as the hutch. You can either enclose the ovens in a cabinet or in drywall (check the FKB -- I've seen a couple of examples of this). (4) Put the hutch next to the DO cabinet or wall space. Take a look at mnhockeymom's finished kitchen. She has a snack center hutch that will give you design ideas. Also, google hoosier cabinets. I would give the hutch a beadboard back instead of backsplash and use corbels and different type of countertop material, to give it a finished/separate hutch appearance. Have two glass cabs that are longer than the center bookcase area (or glass cabs in the center and longer bookcase areas on either side of that) so that there would be a 12" longer cab, a 36" center and a 12" longer cab for the top part of the hutch. Finish out with decorative trim pieces along the bottom and sides of the three wall/upper pieces of the hutch. You would still have 36" runs of counter and wall cabs next to your range on both sides (have the closet built a tad deeper than normal so that you don't lose the symmetry of that wall; you can always use shelves in that closet that are shallower than the closet depth for functionality -- or make it a coats & brooms closet with only the one shelf above the rod plus hooks on the sides for your vaccuums/mops/etc. Personally, I think having the hutch on the end instead of the double oven will draw attention to the hutch. Having it sandwiched between a double oven and a wall will make it appear to be part and parcel to the rest of the fitted kitchen.

Microwave Placement: How about expanding the row of cabinets (pantry cabinets?) on the chimney side to 18" deep and putting the MW in one of the cabinets in that run? If necessary, the refrigerator could be moved to the left another couple of inches. If the majority of your MWing is reheating, then putting the MW near the refrigerator and the pantry makes the most sense anyway. Note: I just looked at several GE Spacemaker MWs and they all said you need a 30" cabinet. (I looked at JVM1850SH, JVM1440LK, JVM1650SH, plus a few others) Other Comments: What are the cabinets on the far right wall? Pantry? Dish hutches? Combination? Where are you keeping your "utility" items (broom, mop, etc.)? Sink/Prep Sink: How do you feel about a prep sink on the island? Right now, the work flow is not ideal. Work moves from the refrigerator/pantry to the sink and prep space to the cooking area. Your current work flow has you crossing the entire length of the kitchen to get to the sink. If you plan to prep on the island, you then backtrack to the island; if you plan to prep b/w the range and the sink then that step is fine. Note, however, that prepping on the perimeter counter b/w the sink and range potentially overlaps the cleanup area. If someone is cleaning up while you're prepping you may be bumping elbows (or butts!). If you prep on the island, all zones are separate and there is no "elbow or butt bumping!" If you have a prep sink, you only have to walk across a portion of the kitchen (exact amount depends on where you put the prep sink) and the range is immediately behind you. Refrigerator: Ideally, the refrigerator should be closer into the kitchen work area, but on the outskirts so that people coming in from the rest of the house for a snack do not interfere with prep/cook/cleanup. However, it appears you're going for a "look" on the range wall, so moving the refrigerator over to that wall won't work. The sink wall, with the DW and trash, doesn't have enough room for the refrigerator, so it cannot go there. Moving the DW to the left of the sink would put it in the way of the range's oven door and loading/unloading the DW could interfere with cooking on the range. Range Hood: It's strongly recommended that your vent hood be at least 6" wider than your range/cooktop. With a 30" range, you should have a minimum of a 36" vent hood. You have the space for it and it would only take 3" off of the upper cabinets on each side of the vent hood. FWIW, I agree with your cabinet maker about detracting from the range...if you are you getting a particularly attractive/striking range. Aisles: Your 39" clearance b/w the sink/DW and the island is a little tight. While it will work, I would feel more comfortable with another 3 to 6 inches (42 to 45 inches) HTH!
