Garden Chair Lesson Learned

After seeing rchovey's chair, it made me think of one I did several years ago. I worked an entire winter on this attaching over 800 pcs to it. Grouting was quite a chore. Finished, I planted it and it sat on my deck for about three years. But I thought it was too much work bringing inside during the winter (weighed about 80 pounds). BIG mistake. The chair was old, wood, and I live in Iowa....little by little the glass fell off in chunks until there was nothing left but this little picture.

I have another chair....I hope to do another someday.

Sorry to hear that, Becky. I can understand your pain, with all of that work. It's an adorable chair. I recently read a mosaic artist made the comment, she just accepted that her mosacis might not live 100 years and that was okay with her. Guess we need to accept that nothing is permanent even though it has our heart and soul in them.

How sad. That's the prettiest little chair. You did such a fabulous job, doesn't appear you need inspiration. Just start gluing on another one and it'll come to you as you work.

Jon, I can cut back and bareroot three of them if you're interested. Weigela florida 'Variegata Nana'. I want to convert to a shrub with fall color in their current spot. I cut them back to keep them more globe like so they are pretty robust. Just pick up shipping which is dirt cheap with my connections. PM, I have a feeling your arid climate is more of factor along with the heat. Could be completely unrelated but variegated conifers get better color in more humid climates. At the end of the day I had Fine Wine in a south exposure for a foundation planting and they never had a nice color with the exception of spring.

Hi, I still have company. Will be here until Friday. I had my grandson for 3 days, then he was still here yesterday and our company came yesterday, too, a day early ! Just as we were going out the door to make the hours drive up to take our grandson home. So, my daughter had to come down and get him. I had to cook dinner for everyone. At least my dh cooked the chicken on the grill for me, bless his heart ! So, I am exhausted ! Having a good visit, though. Anyway, part of the deal with the relish is also the density of it. Relish is normally denser than a salsa would be. Especially the ones that are water bath canned, you notice how much vinegar is in them ? A lot of people comment on how liquid they are, but that is part of the safety of the products. The size of the pieces of food is also a consideration in safe processing of foods. That and how much liquid is in something. That is why diced tomatoes packed in water takes less processing time than those packed without any added water. There are a lot of factors that go into a safe recipe for canning. Yes, that is true, too, what Carol said about bottled lemon juice being twice as acidic as vinegar, yet tastes less tart. That new book is nice, but it is the same as what is online. I saw the new copy of the book. You need to simmer the food for the time called for because it also "preshrinks" the vegetables. That, and you want the food really hot as it goes into the jars when you are hotpacking foods. That can make a difference in processing times with some foods. If you check some recipes you will notice that raw pack and hot pack are not always the same processing times for the same ingredients. I agree, keep the vinegar amount to 4 cups in the recipe. I sure hope I am making sense, as tired as I am !!! If not, forgive me. Things may get better, but then again, it is the starting of canning season ! I won't make any promises... Another thing, if you made jelly with the liquid, it would need some added vinegar. Just like all pepper jellies do. It would not be high acid like fruits.

4. Planting 3 or 4 kinds of morning glories on the arbor look as lovely as you envisioned. But seed collecting - well, that's going to be problem....if you want to keep the seeds from the BLUE plant separate from the seeds from the PINK. And NOW you have to explain to garden visitors why there are little pieces of colored ribbon tied all over the vines.... Hear, hear. I use bread ties which are decidedly more "pokey" compared to ribbon. I'm sick of apologizing for everyone getting snagged. Now I suggest that they bypass the arbor and take the long way around. Which leads me to: 1. Stop ignoring the sizes listed on plant labels and seed packs. If something says it will grow to 10ft, assume that it will and only plant one. Nobody needs 50ft of Morning Glorys to fill an arbor "nicely". 2. When you give extra plants away they then belong to the recipient who can do with them what they want. They are allowed to plant them in unsuitable (and laughable) conditions, slowly kill them in any manner in which they are good at or even launch them into space if that's what they want to do. Until someone creates the RSPCP (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Plants) you cannot take legal action against them and you should just relax. 3. Cut as many bouquets as possible and give them to everyone you know (including the cats). 4. Your garden may not be picture perfect. You might have planted orange, blue and pinks together, caterpillars have eaten off half your flowers and there are yellow leaves and floppy plants everywhere, but you know what? All that mess is much more rewarding than having miles of perfectly green antiseptic grass with perfectly spaced cone shaped shrubs planted around an empty flagpole. This is a great topic btw. :)

My lessons this year: 1. Just because you have the seeds, you don't have to start them. I was lucky and found homes for my extra 300 plants but it was touch and go for a bit. I still planted 50 plants and as I can, for the third weekend in a row, am seeing the error of my ways 2. Those cute little plants become giant mangled monsters so - don't over plant in small raised beds. They will get bigger - keep up on the pruning unless you want a tomato jungle - use better and more supports to keep the giants from falling over - write down what's planted where because sharpie will wash off sticks and the plants will grow big enough to hide the name sticks 3. Hail is horrible! My beautiful plants have looked beat up for three weeks now. 4. Chickens do not belong in the garden once the tomatoes begin to ripen... Unless you want them pre- tasted Already saving seeds and thinking about next season!!!

yeah, wood should never be used for outdoors. No matter how well you seal it, it will absorb water and swell. It is afterall, what trees make wood for.

It's a horrible shame to hear of this, I'm sorry for all your hardwork wasted.

AW that is so sad. Was a pretty little chair. 80 POUNDS WOW That IS a lot of glass. So Sorry.

Beautiful chair I feel your pain too,gonna start rebuiling 2 pedestals done on fiberglass that I had on my front porch everything is falling off.I used liquid nails way back and should have smeared on thinset instead but did not know it at the time.

Awww, what a beautiful little chair too. I know it makes you sick; hopefully you saved some of the pieces to put on your next one. I'm sure you'll think of another great design..

I used indoor tiles on my birdbath and they are freezing and chipping, too lazy to haul inside cuz of weight(it&mine)....lesson learned

Too CUTE!!! I can imagine the kick-in-the-stomach feeling when you saw that first piece fall off....ouch!
Maybe you could make a pretty little picture frame in the same design for it? And thanks for sharing this story...think how many of us newbies you've saved from making the same mistake!

Yup..been there...done that...returned the shirt!!!! My bowling ball and a birdbath fell apart. I was so upset. Live and learn.

Your chair was very pretty. Im still in the throes of giving birth to mine so I will post a pic when its done. It will not be used outside for sure!!! Sorry about you losing it!

I guess if I want to make one for outside Im gonna have to make it out of cement..ha that shoud hold up huh???!!!

I feel your pain! I learned my lesson on using indoor tiles on an outside bench - they eventually all cracked and flaked off. I know your chair looked great - it still looks good!

I wonder if a mosaic can survive outside in the winter under a porch where it would be sheltered from the snow and water, but not the cold.

I just found this thread and now I'm worried. All my projects are for outside. What can we do to help them last?
