I immediately thought of Chromcraft when I saw you heading. My parents have owned Chromcraft since the 60's. They've had their current chairs for at least 30 years, and Chromcraft still makes them. They have casters and are incredibly comfortable. My dad is 91 and my mother is 85, and they don't have trouble getting out of the chairs, but they do have indoor/outdoor carpeting in their kitchen.

I wonder if they could customize the chair to make it stationary but still swivel?

Thanks, Dee, that's good to know. I was thinking about this, and the chair Mom sits in has a wall right behind it. She could push the chair against the wall to stabilize it. She's almost 94! Perhaps a large piece of rug under the chair would help, too.

My other thought is outdoor dining furniture, which has a round base. It would have to be padded, though.

Which style do your parents own?

We recently bought office desk chairs from an office supply store because we wanted some that swiveled and had castors for our kitchen table. You might check there because they have many styles and could possibly customize some chairs for you. I searched everywhere and couldn't find what we wanted in regular dining room chairs

They have the one in the link below. It's not my particular taste, but they like it. They often sit in them for 5-6 hours a day in their kitchen since my mother has Alzheimer's and seems to do better there. They've never changed the upholstery, which seems to clean up great. (But, again, the chairs are 30 years old)

If all you find are rolling swivel chairs, could you take the rolling casters off the chairs and place some other "foot" to each leg of the chair?

Thanks for the link, Dee. That does look comfy, if not exactly the latest style. My mom is beyond caring about that -- well, mostly. She is very, very sharp. She sits in her kitchen chair more than anywhere. It's where she watches tv, reads the paper and the mail.

Kees, I thought of that and I guess it just depends on how the caster is attached. The rolling chair I'm sitting in at the moment could not be changed.

What about outdoor furniture? I was worried that she wouldn't also want it to tilt, but maybe that won't be a problem? There are some really good looking chairs...the bases are different, but would she care?

Another idea would be to look for swivel bar stools with arms that could have the legs cut down to table height.

Those are really nice and could work. Outdoor furniture (good quality) tends to be expensive, though. Do you know what the brands are? Thanks!

We have Summer Classics outdoor swivel rockers. The rocker part makes it a more loose seating ... probably not the best solution for your mom. Keep that in mind if you go that route.

I just googled swivel patio chairs. I am not familiar with any of these, but thought maybe you could look at an outdoor furniture to see if anything is suitable. Just seemed like a possible option - but I didn't look at price. If outdoor swivel chairs are always looser as Natal says hers are, then they might not be a good choice.

I think you have to be really careful with outdoor chairs since many of those shown are metal. Unless the cushions are extremely soft and thick, that metal is too hard on old bones for extended period of time.

I have Braxton Culler chairs in my kitchen because they were the most comfortable I found on my trip to NC. Even the high end dining chairs like Baker were uncomfortable to me to sit in for a long period.

The chair in the link below is Braxton Culler, which, I'll admit, is not cheap (I'm not sure of the cost but their products are generally not inexpensive), but since she'll need only one, it may be doable. I can see her sitting in it all day.

That chair looks so comfy! I think it's too big to work in her space, though. She'd begetting four of them, too, to replace the four she has now. I'll check out their site to see if there is anything similar in comfort but smaller.

Thanks for thinking of me, Lukki. At least those don't have casters, but they don't have arms either. I sat and went through the entire Chromcraft site with Mom and she had something bad to say about each one. LOL. She is really out of touch with the cost of things these days and was stunned that an average chair costs more than $200.

Your welcome sorry it didn't work out. My mom can be the same way, very decisive about what she wants, likes or needs. We went shopping for purses a year or so ago and I was amazed at how many tiny details of her potentially new pocketbook were important to her.

I know this isn't for everyone, but I see swivel dining chairs at the consignment stores often. Have you considered checking some of the consignment stores in your area and going with something you can reupholster instead?

Lighter weight people can try the portable swivel cushion offered by medical supply stores, now sometimes stocked in larger drug stores. They are an inexpensive, temporary fix while you shop for a permanent solution. My mobility-challenged parent was able to use one with an armless, molded plastic dining chair. She used the table (on one side) as support when rising.
