Need info on linoleum tiles over linoleum, please..
Comments (5)The plasticizers in the existing sheet vinyl(not linoleum, much different) will bond but only for a short time, and the plasticizer migration emulsifies the peel & stick adhesive. You need to clean the vinyl, and then skimcoat emboss the surface, which may take two coats, then use the peel & stick primer and lay your tiles. Some undercut, some net fit. It is faster for me to undercut, then to heat a tile and freehand cut the sometime intricate trim on the doorjambs....See MoreKiki's Bungalow -- need some opinions please
Comments (28)Here's an update. I've decided to keep the configuration the same for now because I don't really know what I want, I don't want to spend too much to remodel until I've lived in the house. So I am going to replace the countertops and the floor (vinyl flooring), and paint the cabinets. I think I agree with you all that a nice cream would like nice vs. a white. I've picked out a countertop. It's Formica laminate, but it's very pretty, I think. Also Emagineer -- I really love the refrigerator. I think a counter-depth refrigerator will be perfect and will not overpower the kitchen like a regular refrigerator would. And I'll have my old refrigerator in the garage if I need extra storage space. Also, I see what you guys mean about making the countertop all one level, instead of the bar behind the sink. I'm just not sure the cabinets under the bar will allow for that -- but I'm going to look into it. What do you think of the counter-top?...See MorePlease help with some kitchen decisions...
Comments (11)I like the Himalayan Slate and Labrador because they seem to tie everything together. Have you seen cate1337's kitchen? She used a Formica soapstone (laminate) -- cannot now recall which one, but before I saw your proposed samples that was my first thought. It's similar to the Slate but not as busy. I have a highly figured countertop (Calacatta marble) and I'll tell you, having too much pattern can make it harder to keep clean -- it's hard to see everything! At least, this is my husband's excuse .... But it is also true. This can be a good or a bad thing -- I think my countertop and the most beautiful one ever (!), so on the one hand it's a good thing. On the other, I really like having a clean countertop, and the fact that I can't so easily see the crumbs is a bummer. You have already done a beautiful job on your kitchen. Congratulations!...See MoreWould love some thoughts re: countertops
Comments (52)Now that I see pic, I realize I was picturing your wood edge differently. Don't let dh read this, but I actually think they are nice. I just think the pure plain white counter is a little jarring against that. If you did the one you described that had some "movement" in it, I'd bet it would look so much nicer. Anything that is not so stark white will help. I also imagine that they show everything as I have old pale peach ones now and they drive me nuts. Of course I want clean counters, but mid-cooking, it bothers me how I have to keep stopping to wipe, lol. Having a multi tone, even a very light one, will not make every crumb stand out from a mile away. I think I'd go with new formica on the tops if I did not like stone. Since you already have wood cabs and a wood floor, I don't think I'd go with a wood counter. If it is not too presumptuous, I think a new backsplash to go with the new counters would refresh the whole look. It need not be pricey either, just a little less plain. If you have access to a Habitat for Humanity Restore or similar, or try ebay, you can pick up tile very reasonably and then use your creativity to add some zing. HD & Lowes have some nice choices these days too. Btw- I love a nice all-white backsplash, just not the 4 x 4s laid upright with no accent pieces or liners. I adore tile and the options to make it special and unique. It really sets the tone for the kitchen due to nature of how one sees it right away from a distance. You can't be as creative with other elements to the same extent....See Moreroadtrash
