HELP - Kitchen counter hole cut 'wrong' for faucet

Hi,

I recently had a quartz counter top put in and yesterday I went to install the faucet. Well it turns out the fabricator cut the hole at a slight angle, so the faucet neck won't go through!

Instead of calling the contractor to come out to fix it (I have a difficult time getting ahold of them, it's not been a good experience), is there something I can do to make the neck fit? My friend said to get a round file and file the hole at the edges.

Please let me know what I can do...thank you.

Not what you want to hear but, rather than risk breaking the counter top at a fragile spot, I would call the fabricator and get them to fix their goofup.

Why take the chance on ruining your beautiful countertop.
Suck it up and call them, nag them, then watch them fix it.

Bummer.

Hahah Hollysprings - Oh goodness no! I didn't bend it or make it. Sorry if I was misleading (new to posting here). I bought the rectangle pre-fab'd and am hoping to put a drop in prep sink. It was a "bone yard" piece at a manufacturer near me. There's damage on one corner, but not significant. I don't have to put a sink in it, but a little prep sink would be nice, and I can make it work in my existing kitchen, so figured I'd do as much of it myself as possible. Okay. Update on removing countertop(s). We took the first (of 2) countertops off. Abbisgram, you were correct, and there were only a few screws attaching the top. All came out easily except one which was impossible to get to without disassembling the whole cabinet, so we got out the sawzall and took care of that one. Decided for several reasons not to special order countertops. We bought a sheet of 3/4" plywood (4x8), had it cut in half lengthwise, and that will do all the new countertops. Got the first one on and will need to put the tiles and edging on. Regarding the comment from the guy at Lowes: He was correct in the sense that the cabinet was very flimsy; however, it didn't 'fall apart'. The front (where the doors are attached) is pretty standard, however the sides of the cabinet are 1/8" (at most) luan, and there is no back piece at all, just a 1x2 strip fastened to the bottom of the (old) countertop, then screwed to the wall. Thankfully, the shelf inside the cabinet seemed to help keep it all together til we got the new top on it. Once the new plywood was on though, it is as sturdy as it was before ... lol. Not sure if I mentioned that this is not our full-time home, it's a mobile home that we purchased in a resort town, so we are not there to work on it every day. Hoping to go back next week and remove/replace the 2nd countertop, then cover them. Bottom line is that it wasn't nearly as scary as the Lowe's guy made it sound. And thanks, abbisgram, for the encouragement. :) As a side note, the finished countertops will end up costing under $100 for approx. 13-14 feet of countertops. Worse---- too big. I guess the guy wrote down reveal, but I didn't want reveal and head kitchen guy was standing there for the whole conversation and sided with me. Basically it is a reveal except for corners, which line up withy the edges of the sink. I didn't get a picture but should have. Anyway, we made sure they took the actual sink this time and not just the template because I will be super bummed if it happens twice!

Hmmmm, I thought I replied a couple days ago but must have forgotten to confirm it. Sorry about that. Anyway, there was nowhere near two inches to work with the last two times I did this, and that's pushing the sink toward the front edge as far as I could go. I ended up using my jigsaw (Skil) with the scroll feature, where I steer/turn the blade (only) sideways to give clearance for the saw near the basksplash. But that's still time-consuming for making the corner turns, so a large hole saw for the radius corners is a great idea. I'll use the one for cutting lock holes, and then might be able to cut the straight portion (near the backsplash) with a reciprocating saw if necessary. Thanks for the replies.

I agree with Ci & CE - you have everything to gain by having the contractor fix it and potentially a lot to lose if you try to do something that you are not experienced with and it doesn't go as well as you hoped.

I am having a hard time imagining the situation. How would cutting the hole at an angle prevent the faucet base (I assume) from going through? Wouldn't it just make the faucet want to sit at an angle?

He needs to bring over a diamond imbedded sanding roll a little smaller than the correct diameter and a cup for water to lube it as he reems the hole. His hole drill may be another tool for the job.

Ditto to all of the above. Do you really want to incur the risk of breaking the stone yourself? Around faucet holes is a fragile area, even for a professional. Sometimes, despite the best installer's technique, the stone will crack. At that point, you need a professional to fix it or replace it. If you do it yourself, you'll be paying any of those charges. Plus, I would imagine it would be more likely to break if you're not experienced at this.

I know it's not what you want to hear since you don't like this company, but I'd definitely suck it up and call.

Agree - they did it wrong, they need to fix!!
I will say that our counter install went perfectly and they did a great job!!

If the error was made by the fabricator, it seems you'd need them to fix it. Their error may qualify you to use your warranty if the countertop needs to be replaced. But if someone else messes with it, it might nullify your warranty.

Can you tell I've read the fine print of my quartz warranty? :-)

Hope you get it fixed just right!

Thanks for the replies.

Rather than messing further with the hole, I ended up just getting another faucet that had a smaller neck and installed it last night, works perfectly. Appreciate the responses though and informing me about the delicateness of that area...
