DIY Stainless Steel Countertop? Help with faucet hole!

I posted in the metalwork forum, but I think I may have chosen the wrong venue for the question in retrospect. Technically, it's a DIY countertop question even though the countertop is made from metal... I hope this isn't cheating. no one has written on a single post -mine or anyone elses- in there, so I'm hoping one of you knows.

I have a stainless steel countertop made up of stainless steel wrapped around 1-3/4" thick MDF (plywood?). I need to cut a faucet hole in it that is 1 1/4" in diameter.

Here is a photo of the underside

I have no idea how to acheive this. I googled a bit and I think I will need to mark out a center point and the circumference. I think I will need to use a center punch to nick the center before I start drilling with a bit that is OK to use on metal.... But I know I am missing things here.

Would anyone be willing to give me a step by step guide on how the heck to do it myself? Can anyone point me to a thread or website that might help?

Thanks for any advice you can give.
