Help me decorate my Kitchen countertops. Pictures
Comments (35)I have viewed that blog before - can't remember where I linked to it from. Maybe Nesting Place. I LOVE the color of her cabinets, but that is just too much *stuff* on the countertops (and elsewhere in the room). IMO. Clutter. One thing she does and I have one too - but forgot to mention - is a lamp. I love a lamp somewhere on the kitchen counters. Oakley - re: utensils in drawers - I have different drawer organizers and dividers. It works GREAT. The knife block thingy (piece of wood with grooves for knives) is another great item. It lays in the drawer. I have a big crock with utensils on one counter, but most are antique pieces that I've collected and not so many pieces I actually use. The items are easy to get to, but they also get dusty. tina...See MoreCounter Top Installation Help for IKEA Sektion 15" Base Cabinets
Comments (7)I am not any further on the counter :) But I am still planning on using the ply as an underlay. Unless I don't, lol. The soapstone that I have on hold has a small ding in the surface. I can repair it by using epoxy and ground soapstone "crumbs". Then when dry it sands nicely and you really don't see it. I haven't actually bought the stone I have on hold, but its not going anywhere. They might have other remnants soon. I think I will drive there tomorrow and reassess the "ding" and maybe just go with it instead of waiting for something else to turn up. Just got the under cabinet LED lights installed today. I am still working on the crown at the top. I have one length in and have to cut a piece to finish it up. The space is to tight for me to fasten the crown as instructed. I am using extra strong velcro, that will hold 1lb/sqin. It has been working well for the top crown. I used velcro to attach the filler strips to the 2x4 backing at the ends of the cabinets too. It was great. The instructions for my style of crown have you attach the crown at the bottom of the uppers in a way that is not a good method. They have you directly screw through the bottom of the crown and up into the cabinet box. There is a narrow foam strip that gets applied between the crown and box which looks like it is used to block the gap between, so under cabinet lights don't show through. The foam works, but the screws don't finish flush. The screw heads are so obvious. I am going to back each screw out, one at a time, and counter sink the hole so the screw head will be recessed. Then I can cover the holes with a plug or wood filler. I would post a picture of my under cabinet lights but I haven't been able to post pictures for several days now. I don't know what gives....See MoreFilling holes in mineral oiled kitchen countertop
Comments (18)Sarah, glad you're (hopefully) not going to have to deal with a hole from a biscuit joint. I just wanted to chime in about having a wood counter with a sink in it as my island is long boards of walnut and I have an undermount sink in the island. Because I knew it was going to get wet on a regular basis I opted for the Waterlox finish and I'm well pleased with it. I've had it over a year. Now, I did refinish it once, but it was because against my better judgment, my hubby had asked that I do the original finish (we've done all the work ourselves) when the temperatures were very low. I knew it wasn't going to cure properly, but he was certain it would be fine. Long story short, I was right, he was wrong, and I made him sand the whole thing down again some 8 months later because it was leaving huge scratch looking marks in the finish (not all the way down to the wood) everytime something accidentally got dragged across it. The second time I used the Waterlox finish the temps were just fine and I was able to leave my house open for the top to cure properly. (He wasn't going to uninstall it for me to refinish it... ours has a waterfall edge so I understand why he didn't want to remove it) Even when it wasn't cured properly though, water beaded right up the way it's supposed to. I also have two different bathroom countertops done in walnut with a Waterlox finish. One is our powder room, the other is the bathroom in our basement that our three teen boys share everyday. Those have been perfectly fine for several years now. Except you don't want to use bleach on a Waterlox finish, it's the one thing I've found doesn't react well, not that you lose the water proof finish, it just makes it look cloudy....See MoreHelp: quartz counter tops not fitted correctly?
Comments (8)@joseph_corlett interesting about the sink install. I don't think there's a strap, which shows (again) my lack of experience with this. We have a tricky situation as the counter installer & the cabinet maker have been engaged separately from our GC - both are recommendations from our designer. I thing that the cabinet maker's on-site carpenter fitted the the ply for the counter and put the sink in place. The cabinet crew were gone when the counter guy was here. If I were doing this again (which I'm not going to do) I'd make sure I had much better understanding of who was responsible for what....See Moreroulie
