Cerama Bryte which I bought at Home Depot did a great job cleaning the black glass cooktop that was here when we bought the house. I thought I'd never be able to get it clean (the previous owners didn't have the word "clean" in their vocabulary) but the Cerama Bryte got the cooktop looking like new after about six cleanings. Now I use it weekly, or more often, and am very pleased. I got it at Home Depot, 28oz. for about $7, but have used it for a year and still have about 2/3 of a bottle left.

I've had an induction cooktop for almost four years. I love, love, love it. I wouldn't cook on anything else. Had a gas one before. Induction is instant (like gas) and twice as efficient as gas. And, a cinch to keep clean. Nothing burns on it. Plus, it's easier to control the heat on it than any gas or electric cooktop. I can melt chocolate on it. Don't need a double boiler. The heat can be so low (not possible with gas or electric) that eggs don't curdle in a custard sauce. Mine also has individual timers on each "burner" (it's a European brand). No more burned vegetables or overcooked asparagus. I just set the timer and go on to prepping or cooking something else. And, it makes perfect boiled eggs. Heat up the eggs in water to boiling on No. 11 heat, turn down to No. 4, set the timer for 4 minutes and voila! perfect medium boiled eggs. But the ease in cleaning makes getting it a no-brainer, that is, if you don't like taking apart an electric coil or gas range to clean it. In a few years I predict induction will be the major source of cooking. Prices are already coming down to compare to some higher-priced gas cooktops. Once you cook on one, you'll never look back.

Here is what I do when something burns on the cooktop. This might sound like a Cerama Bryte commercial, but I find this stuff really works. I put a little Cerama Bryte cleaner on the spill first and let it sit; this usually softens things up a bit. Next, I use the Cerama Bryte scraper (which is just a razor blade in a plastic holder ... you could just buy a cheap razor blade holder instead) to scrape off what has burnt on. Finally I use the yellow scrubpad to scrub any remaining residue off. I've always worried about etching the cooktop with burnt sugar, but I have boiled over sugary stuff that has burnt on and I've been able to get it off without a problem. The razor blade with cleaner seems to do the trick.

Having a glasstop stove is new for me, and I find it to be a PITA to keep clean, but I do like the way it looks. So I will be wary of aluminum foil on it, in the future.
