Messy sewing room

Ok, I know my sewing room is a disaster, but I don't need a 6 1/2 yo telling me "it looks worse today than it did last time I was in here." So, I asked her, "would you like me to stop sewing and clean the room up, 'cause I can't do both?" Her answer, "SuSu it's really not THAT bad". Guess she grasped the concept that there would be no b'day for her or christmas outfits if I stopped to clean the room. Usually I take a week off following the holidays and and get it back in some sort of order, so by this time of year it's awful.

Aren't sewing room supposed to be messy???? LOL Mine seems to stay that way most of the time,it becomes the dumping ground for anything that anyone doesn't know where to put it.
Havn't you heard,a messy room is a sure sign of Creativity!!! That's my story and i'm stickin to it!!!

Sorry not able to post any good links, but I have seen (and ripped) a lot of nice magazine spreads on just such multipurpose rooms. Good features are multipurpose furnishings, furniture that can be moved around or re-oriented easily (lighter weight chairs, table that can move to be bedside or writing table) storage cubes, rolling files, using hidden storage (as you are using closet). The other thing that to me makes the rooms look fun and inviting is using nice furnishings and avoiding the mish-mash, castoff junk room look. That can mean investing $$, but maybe more to the point it means being intentional, and thinking about what would best fit the use, the space, and the decor scheme--keep your eye out for just the table or chair that would be right, editing until you have the look you want and not just tossing in all your spare stuff; painting items to match, using fabrics to coordinate, picking art or photo frames specifically for the space. These are all generic decor concepts as well but can take more effort to stay focused in the multi-purpose room. Another sort of operational concept is, make it easy to do a rapid clean up for guests. In my study-guest room that means several things--1) keep after it to not have too much stuff or random stuff drift into the room, also not let my project ADD get out of control and have too many things pulled out at once--a constant battle 2) I keep some dedicated EMPTY closet and shelf space with empty baskets or empty plastic bins, already labelled as "empty" (yep) or "stuff to sort and put away" for the specific purpose of being able to a whirlwind pickup when you just don't have time and energy to do a precise pickup and putaway.

Hi, all I have used Garden Web for years for remodeling, never thought to use it for quilting/sewing. I am widowed now, and have 2 bedrooms, one slightly larger than 11x15, serves as a sewing room/guest room. Currently, I have a duplex bed w/frame taking up lots of wall space. My family are all out-of-state and can't visit very often. Perhaps once a year single or couple friends visit. Bed is used only occasionally. I have inflatable queen and twin size mattresses (a couple of years ago, had the family down for Christmas). I'm trying to decide whether to a) lose the bed and rely on inflatables; b) trade the bed for a double or queen-size bed which would gain some wall space, or c) deal with what I have. The room will be repainted soon; there's a very pleasant view outside the window, so the sewing machine stays there. Opposite the window wall is a closet, and a small wicker vanity on a short wall. A wicker dresser (partly seen in pic) and the entry door is opposite the bed wall. I'm left handed, so it's cut, stitch, press; from left to right. I'm looking for a better table/cabinet solution for the area, but this works for now. I'd love room for a 36" cutting table.

I have been sewing like a bandit all weekend. I hate to have time constraints as it takes some of the fun out of things but I have to get this top finished and out to the long arm quilter in the morning. I'm making a Wizard of Oz themed quilt for a very good friends birthday and I'm flying out to TX next week to bring it to her!! I picked up a bunch of cute fat eighth bundles last summer and knew right away who I would be using the fabric for. Problem is after i opened the bundles last month I didnt like the way the fabrics looked together. Since the fabric is discontinued I hopped online to ebay and bought another 10 yards in 4 different colors!!! I also made 3 different blocks and changed the configuration twice!! I'm finally happy with the outcome and I'm sewing my rows together, in between reading here!! Its going to be a long night!!!

Mud room/ Laundry room/ Sewing room?

I wouldn't want my sewing area to be part of the laundry or the mudroom. I can't imagine that it would be all that enjoyable to spend time there. At least not for me. Once I get going on a project, I like to spread out. I also find I need lots of natural light to be comfortable when I'm working on a project. How much light would you really have? I think it would be easier to combine the mudroom and laundry area and then incorporate long term storage if you have extra room in that area. If you like to garden, it could also be space for a utility sink and grow lights or a potting area. I'd steal an extra bedroom and have my sewing area do double duty with a guest bedroom. I have a good sized laundry room and I'm always suprised when people ask why I didn't make the extra space into my sewing area. No one ever asks why I didn't stick the DH and his computer in there! Gotta give her credit for noticing both sides of the coin. She will also enter & say "Uhm! Looks like you've been cleaning since the last time I was here". Move a set of coasters or anything & she will notice. But ya'll know we love her to death.

Just wish I had a whole room to devote to sewing! Mine is also the guest bedroom & it's a scramble to find a place to cram the mess into before company comes.

I could put 12" risers under the bed legs & stash more there...or quit buying fabric, but that's not likely! LOL.

Today I tried to organize some things in the sewing room, it hasn't worked, read an article about cleaning out the scrap bags,boxes, and starting over, but I can't let go of a lot of little pieces, they are my friends, when I am "blue" they comfort me, when I'm cold I guess I could sew them together and make a quilt, oh well, orginization is not for me, just wish I could find some of the stuff I missplaced. LOL Rene

DH can't understand how I can just throw threads and trimmed pieces on the floor. Poor dear is just too anal! I figure it's clean-up time whenever the project is done, not DURING, for Pete's sake!

Oh but how to part with some of the bits....I always start out good but then go and rummage around in the toss out can when I suddenly think of an idea to use my "bits" in.....this just happened to me yesterday when I tossed out some rainbow colored yarn/lace.....then I came across a small fan ornament I'd crocheted and thought...I'll just weave my bit of lace through that ....added color....*sigh* went into the garbage and "rescued" the other tiny bits I'd tossed. Messy sewing room??? Messy every room when I sew more like! Budster

I wrote about how I stashed my stuff (when I was a neat person) Iwould put things in the boxes and make a list of what was in the box and give that box a number. then I put tha list in my computer. Now to find something I don't really have to open each box. Just look at the list and find that numbered BOX
If you look at the photo again you can see some of the numbered boxes on top of the shelves.

So Minnie when are you coming to my house??? I'm not good at computor stuff,havn't a clue how to do some of the stuff you do on it.I just know how to go to message boards,read and write posts. LOL

I cracked up about the fabric comforting you. Once my grandfather asked Mother why she had so much fabric and she told him she only bought it when she felt sad/bad. He said "Don't guess you've been well/happy in a long time".
