Lawn mower will not start after I empty the bag
Comments (2)What engine / model #s would be helpful. First guess is the ignition coil is on the way out- especially If you have a Tecumseh engine. Some Briggs have different issues that are more common to them.I like to cover my bases knowing the fuel is fresh, carb clean, fuel cap vents well, and has a new spark plug 1st. You could pop the air filter and give a shot of carb spray when it is in not starting mode and see if it wants to fire up when you pull it....See MoreDad's old lawn mower....or confessions of a mower abuser
Comments (27)I guess I'm the Dad in this case! I do remember having an el cheapo power mower (person propelled) when I was a kid (red and perhaps Western Auto) and using it for everything - a field at the rear of the house comes to mind... one day it was 3 feet high, the next it was "lawn". Anyway, everyone is always dumping on Craftsman tools and power equipment. I'm still using my Craftsman Eager One, 5HP, Tecumseh engine, that I purchased in 1984. I don't recall it ever failing to start except when the switch I installed to replace the dead-man handle died. It smokes, uses oil, but still cuts better than my $500 Troy-Bilt. At the beginning of the summer, I ran over a rock and bent the blade so that it was actually digging into the ground. Had to replace the blade plate and blade, but didn't faze the crankshaft or the upper crankshaft shear pins. The only maintenance I've ever done is occasionally replace the air filter, less occasionally replace the spark plug (do clean it annually), and change the oil. I think it is coming to the end of its long life and really hate the thought of getting rid of it. It really needs a total engine rebuild (chassis, etc. is still fine - no rust but lots of scrapes), but I just don't have the abilities. JimC...See MoreBest Bagging Mower w/Sprinkler System
Comments (5)Really, if you just wanna keep the ole Murray, if it otherwise works fine, you should be able to. Heavy and/or frequent watering should only be done on new lawns during an establishment process & that should be within as little as a couple weeks up to maybe 2 months at most, depending on if you sodded or started from seeds & the type of grass. Then watering should be reduced to no more than once per week. If mother nature helps that week, then don't run the sprinklers at all. Then as you head into fall, then winter, watering should be reduced further, maybe once a month, and again, if mother nature is dumping precipitation, don't turn on the sprinklers. As was mentioned above, you should do your mowing when the lawn is dry and then water afterwards. Additionally, you should strongly consider discontinuing bagging of the clippings & start mulching your clippings. There's a long list of reasons to mulch: 1) Grass clippings are 80% water and decompose quickly releasing nutrients into your soil. 2) Mulching provides up to 1/3rd of the lawnÂs yearly fertilizer needs providing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and trace amounts of micronutients. 3) Mulching reduces the amount of time you spend bagging and fertilizing. 4) Grass clippings donÂt cause thatch. (over watering and over fertilizing do) 5) Mulching reduces yard waste by 20-40%. 6) Mulching reduces the amount of water your lawn needs. Comments (10)We mow our Floratam as well, but have a bagger on the mower. I use the clippings in my veggie garden as mulch. After 14 years of doing this, the sand is now black soil with worms. :o) And no weeds in the veggie garden. I also cold compost lettuce and such. Just sprinkle it around and let rot. I don't like the clippings in the lawn as the dog and I track them in the house and pool area....See Morehald
