What you probably have is "Efflorescence". See the link below where we had a discussion about it on this forum. You should have lime all through your mix because portland cement is made from limestone. You do want to place your piece in a water bath to leach out the lime and no you don't need to use vinegar. Change the water every day and you should be set in about 3 days. But this has nothing to do with efflorescence. Billie Here is a link that might be useful: Efflorescence

A new version of the Bath Bomb from last year that look good enough to eat...doesn't seem to say anything in the recipe regarding what makes the "chip" look to the cookie(?) - if they fizz like a bath bomb does they are a fun novelty gift, we found the fizz died out in a pretty short time with the one's that were around last year, but everybody wanted them!

Right back at you Stacy. Cookie8 and Jim, thank you for the kudos. Jim, I'm a little jealous of you, but my hips are --somewhat-- relieved that I live much further away from the bakery than you. Although, these muffins are worth the extra half hour on a treadmill. I found this recipe in a book by Lora Brody. It is not her recipe, but, she fully credited the owner/baker of the Cottage Street Bakery, Joanna Keeley. Where the owner got it from? I couldn't care less. I love them. Glad you all do too. Jim, the Cottage Street Bakery uses whole milk in their recipe, but I don't see why you couldn't substitute skim milk. That said, I still highly recommend whole buttermilk because I'm a rebel.[grin] Sol

I don't know if it does or not. I know when I was orginally playing around with them I was ½ing the recipe, & of course not getting exactly ½ of 3/4C. didn't matter if it was over or under a bit as to how much they fizzed. I think the ones with cornstarch use less citric acid so that the recipe proportion (# made/batch) doesn't get out of hand to make before it stiffens up. I have also started making "plain" bombs, totally unscented, partly because I had some requests for unscented ones because of allergies-they wanted the fizz effect, not the smell and because I can keep a supply of the unscented ones on hand, & just scent them as needed. I have stuff in a shop, & some times of the year they sell better than others. In the slow seasons I just take out a few, but when it's busy I need more, with the unscented ones at home I just add the oil to the hardened bomb, let dry well, then put in a small zip top bag & add a topper. Plus if I need say more Rose, I can just scent a few as opposed to dragging everything out to make a few, or be forced to make a batch, which I may not need all of for a couple months. (disclaimer-this doesn't work well for the darker colored oils, because they stain the surface of the bomb. but on the clear oils, works great. Just make sure they are dry before bagging, otherwise the outgassing will make the package expand or pop open if you use zip top bags. Wanna guess how I found that out?? LOL) Hazel
