Hi Everyone - I'm new here

Hi!

I'm new here. I've been looking for a good sewing forum, and I like how nice everyone is here, and how quickly you respond to posts.

I'm a new sewer, but determined. My pile of mistakes is still growing, but I am ever the optimist. I recently chunked my old clunker of a machine and bought a really nice one. Wow, it is so much fun to sew on a machine that works! Right now I am making eye pillows. I'm still experimenting a bit - I'm not sure how much flax seed I should put in them, and if I want to top stitch them or not. If I top stitch them, then I don't have any hand sewing, which makes me batty. Yesterday I bought some cheap material to try. It looks like nylon, and when it was washed, became a huge frayed mess. I've never sewn on nylon before, so it should be interesting to say the least. If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to pass them along.

I'm married and have 2 kids, one in kindergarden and one in 7th grade. I also like to garden, although my vegetable/herb garden this year was decimated by bugs, critters, and disease. My flower gardens are hanging in there, but not really that nice. But life goes on, and I'm not to worried about it.

Welcome to the board.Now tell me,what are eye bags?? Are they those things that you put over your eye to take away the puffiness?? If so i would suggest 100% cotton,especially if they have to be heated in the microwave. The nylon as you have found out shreds a lot and i don't think it would hold up to heating it all the time.

I'm also an avid gardener,not a lot of veggies anymore as there are just the 2 of us now,so not really worth all that work.But flowers,i've got tons.

I also sew,quilt,tole paint,and am an avid cross stitcher.

If you wash your fabric before sewing, always finish the raw ends first. Zig zag or serge is best but a row of short straight stitching is better than nothing.

Thanks for the warm welcome Karen and Sal, I'll check out the Robolady site for sure. And yes, I know how to post pics having posted many over on the kitchen side. I'm also a whiz at Photoshop so I love to do funky things with pictures, too. I'll post some WIP pics of my birdhouses and maybe a few others later. Quick question, would doing a mosaic on a concrete bird bath make it easier to clean? I love watching the birds play in the water so I don't want to turn it into a planter or anything, but what a pain to keep that thing from looking like pond scum! I'm wondering if smooth porcelain tiles or glass marbles or something would make it a lot easier to wipe out. Or would the grout be just as problematic as the concrete? Any particular type of grout work best for something like that? TIA Robin

It's important to control the new stuff coming in as well so the clutter isn't growing. I often just declutter on the fly now, e.g. if I open a closet I sometimes end up just scanning through it for things to get rid of. I think we can get so used to looking at the same stuff that we don't really *see it* and question whether it serves a purpose anymore or not. I never really strive for perfection in my organizing because it would just bog me down with indecision, so I try to focus on doing anything that will help the situation, even if that means getting rid of just a few things at a time, tidying up a shelf or closet here and there, going through a box of things. when I'm working on a project I do end up with a lot of clutter around it that I don't put away because I want things at hand, but I also do a bit of an inventory from time to time and pick out materials, tools, bits and pieces that I know I'm finished with and put them away to reduce the clutter, and one of the things that motivates me to keep going with a project is just being able to gather up all the materials at the end and put them back where they belong (tools back in the garage etc). Garages are hard though because we don't spend a lot of time in them. I've made some strides with ours to get it more organized by putting up tool/shadow boards and that has made it much easier to find the most used tools in there. But we do hold onto a lot of materials for future projects too, pieces of wood, metal left over from other projects and they do come in handy but also take up a lot of space. Thanks for the welcome, Kathi, joansews4u, and Mary. The eye pillows were suggested by a friend. I saw some on the internet, and they were quite pricey. I put my first one in the freezer for a few minutes, then put it over my eyes. It felt wonderful. I'm sure you could also nuke them, but only for a few seconds, as you wouldn't want to burn your eyes.

I did check out the quilting forum, but as I don't quilt, I didn't really stay long - but I loved the post about introductions. I sat there and read the whole thing. I felt welcome and I don't even quilt!

Joansews4u, I actually thought about running a stitch around the nylon before I washed it. Too bad I didn't think about it longer. I was shocked at how much material I lost to shredding.

I just wanted to say WELCOME. I too am new to sewing apparel. However, I've been sewing home decor for many years.

I also love flower gardening. The strangest thing happened, my dogwood has a pink bloom on it and it is full of flower buds. It's strange to see a pink flower on a dogwood in late September next to a red berry. I thought dogwoods ONLY bloomed in the spring time.

Well I hope you stay encouraged about sewing. I absolutely love sewing with a passion!

Thanks, flowermum. I think your dogwood blooming in September is pretty cool. I saw that you are in zone 7, so maybe they will open their buds before you get a freeze. I'm in zone 8, also in the south.
