scrapbooking help needed

Hi,

I want to make scrapbooks for my sisters, and would like to make the actual book too. What would you experts suggest for the cover?? Any ideas would be great. What kind of paper?? or cardboard?

I've never covered any of my books, but i know my local SB store sells material for covers. Such as a leopard skin and some furs.I would think you could cover it with any kind of material. A nice lavender satin would be pretty for a sister maybe pearls or beads glued on....... Just a idea

Here is one website that had a photo album covered with fabric that of course you could also use to cover a scrapbook.

I would suggest that everyone try to find a scrapbooking group in your area. I'm a visual person, and it helps me to see what everyone else is doing. It's nice to see that you aren't the only one out there with the hobby and provides some motivation for getting stuff done. We have a local store that offers a crop night each week and various classes throughout the year. Last night was my second time there. If you need ides or get stuck on something, you always have someone to ask for advice. The people who run the crop are helpful also. They often have ideas on things like cleaning up messes on a page, useful coverups, and they know the best places to look for ideas. In addition to this crop night, I'm starting to get together with friends to scrapbook also. It's nice to be able to set aside time to scrapbook without the kids and have a little adult time.

I'm no expert, I'm just starting too...but I think I've read that you should get rid of the construction paper if at all possible. Use some acid-free, lignin-free, archival card stock instead.

Dear Mary, First I would go to your local Dollar Tree and see if they have any of the more regular supplies you need. (See earlier posting about Dollar Tree.) Second, I would see if you could find a friend or a couple of friends to buy, and share supplies with until you have the cash for your own. That way if each of you bought half then you would have twice the amount of the things you need quicker. If this is not possible, then try and find a crop class in your area where they bring some of the supplies to the crop and let you use them free. This allows you to use different items, to see if you even like them before spending the cash on them. Don't let this company or that one, try and tell you their product is better than the others. Acid free is just that acid free, no matter what the price tag. The extra money involved in the pricer suppliers pays their salary and commissions, not necessarily for a better or safer product. I have in my supplies brands from ALL different kinds of suppliers and I like different tools from each. Get what you like, and find easy to use, not what someone else does. It sounds like such a neat project. I have found when I cut out my pictures(like around their heads,etc.) that I am never happy with them and wish that I hadn't done it. I see cute layouts with them cut out but it doesn't work with me. I don't have a scanner but I don't know if you scanned the photo if you could lighten anything up. Do you have negatives that you could take in to a photo shop and just ask for advice. I had my daughters graduation picture with her cap and gown and the dark gown just blended in to the background so I mounted it on white to try and lighten it up a little. Good luck.

Okay here is a cheaper suggestion:
Go buy a 3 ring binder with a plastic clear cover where you can insert paper into the spline, front and back. Then you can find SB paper ( you'll have to use 12 x 12 paper cut to size for the covers as 8.5 x 11 paper is too small) to match her favorite color, subject, etc... I have done this with SEVERAL cookbooks, and on the spline, I have used alphabet stickers to spell their name, (ie - David's cookbook)
on a matching piece of paper decorated with stickers, and then decorated the front and back cover just like a scrapbook page. It looks best if the same color paper is used as a background for all three sides. I have made several of these for cookbooks and albums and love them more each time I make one. Yours could perhaps say "Sisters are Forever Best Friends" on the front or back. The "D" ring style works best and if you have a large amount of pages get at least a 3 inch one. This will not work though if you scrap in a 12 x 12 size format. You will pay approx. $6.00 for the album which is a great saving compared to many overpriced albums, leaving you more dollars for scraping. Love Penny
