If you want to do garment sewing, you don't need the top of the line machine, but a machine with a nice assortment of about a dozen stitches will allow you sew just about anything. Although this list may be out of date (new models have come on the market), it gives you a good idea of the types of features that you might want to look for. A machine with straight stitch, zig-zag, 3-stitch zig-zag, hem stitches, triple strength knit stitches (straight and overlock) and a button hole stitch will give you a lot of versatility. Some other features to consider are: adjustable needle position (left, middle, right) and automatic needle down, which this particular Janome does not seem to have; it's very basic. Testing the machine yourself is a good idea, to find out if there are features that you don't like. For instance, do you have to hold down the reverse button to lock stitches? You sound similar to me. I have sewn for forty some years but still am a beginner in many senses. Over the years I have done a lot of what I call 'mundane sewing'. Mending, sheets, pillowcases, pjamas, curtains, things for the house and kids. Just now am I working on stuff for myself. I also absolutely hate a machine that jams. It usually is the fault of choosing the wrong needle or lately the wrong thread or tension. For many years i used a NewHome 444 which got me through everything very well. Lately I traded it in for a Janome 4618, probably their simplest machine. I think you might not want to go to a machine with a computer component, which I did not want , but with a few decorative stitches. That is my 4618. Enough to play around with but no big deal look at the Value machines at Janome.com and you might find what you want. I especially like the new machine for its overedge foot, which finished off the seas similar to a serger, but much easier for me.

There are a number of machines on the market that have wider throats. I use a Juki for quilting on my frame. It has a 9' throat. It only does straight stitch, but it does it very well and very fast! Other brands have larger machines (Brother, Baby Lock, etc.) but they tend to have lots of bells and whistles and a $$$ price tag. Other brands out there include Janome, Bernina, Viking and Elna. You may also be able to find a used one at a local shop or on Craigslist. You'd be looking for a "mid arm sewing machine". Donna

I'm familiar with the Husqvarna Viking line which should be accommodate much of your wishes. The latest issue of the HV Epic or its sister Pfaff machine (don't know the model name) both have larger throats, but they won't be taller. They're large and aren't the kind you put away each time you use it. Also,be prepared for sticker shock. Best idea is to visit local major sewing machine brand dealers to test drive machines and sometimes they have good promotions or decent prices on 2nd hand machines. I would stay out of Walmart if you want a sturdy, dependable machine.
