How do you make a fabric wall calendar?

I want to make one of those wall calendars you see in classrooms where the kids can change the dates each day. I've seen them made out of felt or paper with individual pieces for each day of the week, month of the year etc. Those pieces have velcro on the back to make it easy to stick them on. I want to do something like this for my boys' playroom. I want them to be able to change the day, week, month, year, season and weather. I've seen them where they just store the extra pieces and then post the ones that reflect today (like Saturday, July 9, 2005, summer, rainy) and I've seen them that look like a monthly calendar and they just mark which day is today (and maybe yesterday and tomorrow). I'd like to make mine all out of fabric (felt maybe) and use a lot of embroidery to personalize it. I guess I've got ideas on what I want, I'm just not sure how to put it together! I'd appreciate any suggestions y'all can give!

Just my 2 cents, as a mother who raised two boys.

I'd stay away from felt. I envision lost pieces, torn pieces, pieces covered in dog hair, pieces mangled in Hot Wheel tires, etc. At least, that's how it would go with MY two boys.

If you're going to all the trouble of adding embroidery and velcro, how about making the pieces like small padded potholders? They'd be more substantial, harder to lose, easier to toss in the washer if needed.

I'd put a drawstring bag or pocket handy to store the unused pieces. Be prepared for them to become frisbees or Chinese stars during play, though.

Hi Stephanie,

I agree with Dian. I never liked working with felt because I don't like the feel of it, and it does collect a lot of stuff.

I did a Google search for you several different ways, but I did not come up with anything. I will ask a teacher on Monday if they know how to make one and I will let you know.

I always make 12 collages from our year's photos and take them to Kinko's to be made into a calendar. It is an annual gift to DH, the family photograher and is a great way to save the best pictures, so they are easy to find! We hang it on the refrigerator with magnet clips, so we can enjoy the pictures on a daily basis. So much fun. Wish I had started the tradition when we first were married. I do try to get the animal calendars to distribute to my students-they love the World Wildlife and SPCA ones.

Karen, welcome to the group. jcs7, I'm a teacher, too and could always tell the kids who are indepdent at home. I still have 3 in elementary school, so all papers in the backpacks go on the kitchen table when they get home. Field trip/permission slips are put aside on my control journal so I deal with them after dinner. Everything else is either an "atta boy" and in the trash, something for our art corner or they can put it up in their room with a push pin. Homework is back in the backpack when finished. We have a funky hallway area and that has become where we post the artwork. It has a bookshelf that the top is reserved for those clay and papermache projects. My calendar is made by More Time for Moms. It is 16 month calendar so I can write an entire year's events as soon I get the calendar for school, scouts, etc. and then I don't have to keep the schedules. The boxes have enough room that I can put down "field trip/need sack lunch" and still have other events listed. There is a packet at the back if I really need to keep something. I also keep a hanging file for each kid in the same place I keep my medical, household type stuff. If it's something I think I may need in the future then I put it there and I purge that stuff every fall. Part of keeping this stuff in control is to learn that every paper is not a keeper. I put away beginning of the year examples and then another one at the end of the year because it's nice to see the growth. Otherwise, we really don't keep daily stuff. If they do want to keep it, their bedroom is a good spot and if it becomes too much, they have to decide what goes and what stays. I have to say that "out of view" doesn't work for our family. When we remodeled this house the contractor wanted to put up a wall next to the fridge so you wouldn't see the fridge. It was so ingrained in having our calendar on the side of that fridge there was no way I could have a wall there and no calendar. With the calendar out and easy to get to, all six of us check it constantly. We know now-if it's not on the calendar-it isn't going to happen. If you're wanting to make it all in the same fabric, you're going to need more. King coverlet runs 108" x 92". You need 3 yards (108") for the center panel (or a smidge over to allow for seam allowances and folding the edge). A second piece of 3 yards+ you would cut in half lengthwise to make the side pieces. Attach those to each side of the first piece to make your basic block/coverlet. Then you can add a border or trim or just fold under the edges. Hopefully the fabric store will have another 3 yards for you. They "might" let you exchange that 4 yard piece for a 6 yard piece. Might. Some stores won't take back cut fabric.

My garage door is right outside the kitchen doorway and it's metal. So my calendar hangs from a magnetic hook there. It's not as convenient as it used to be but I'm getting used to it. I stick things inside my cabinets with tape all the time, too. Mostly frequently used recipes and kid's lunch id numbers and things. But I have ADD and definitely need my calendar out and in my face! happyladi, which country store do you get your calendar from? Is it one of those dishtowel ones from The Vermont Country Store? I just did a Google image search and came up with this. I am sure that you can make it by just looking at the photo. If you have an embroidery machine, you can embroider the months and the days onto what ever you want to use and put the velcro dots on the back to stick to the felt. It seems pretty easy from the photo.

Forget the felt-no durability at all. Once again, from my teaching days-- I used a calendar very much like the one in the photo.They are able to be purchased at school supply places. However since I had large bulletin boards, I made the calendar from bristol board. The numbers were made from bristol board as well and I had a different set for each month, the reason being , they were made in a pattern with symbols appropriate for the month. Sept might have been something like school bus, pencil, school bus, pencil..... By the end of the year the patterns became more complicated. As well, we would put a symbol for whatever the weather was. At the bottom of the calendar I had a long narrow pocket the front of which was clear plastic. It was divided into 3 sections-yesterday was, today is and tomorrow will be.Each day the child put appropriate cards into the pockets.
December calendar was special. I baked sugar cookies ( with a hole in the top) and hung them on the calendar. Whoever did the calendar each day got the cookie and replaced it with the number. I hope this gives you a few ideas you can adapt for your own use. Kindergarden was such fun!!!
