Bernina 334D Serger

I'm new to using a serger and I have a friend who is wanting to sell but but it's 20 yrs. old...a Bernina 334D. Does anyone have experience with this perticular model and would $150 be a good price for it? I'm confident she took good care of it, but just curious if it'd be a good beginner machine or is it too old and outdated with the newer ones being easier to use. Any tidbits would be great!

Lynn, I don't know anything about that serger, but I had my MIL's old New Home serger for a while (probably about the same age). The dang thing was sooooo hugely frustrating to thread that one day my DH was listening to me complain and told me to just go buy a new one! I got a decent White serger at Hancock's for $200.

So...my recommendation would be to spend the extra $50 and get a new one...they are much easier to thread now, and the White has features the old New Home didn't.

I have a Bernette (Bernina) 334DS. I do enjoy this serger. I enjoy the smaller size of the presser foot (as compared to some), the way it handles and feeds the fabric, and the swing away presser foot.

A couple of years before I purchased the 334DS, I had rented a 334D. In my opinion the 334D did a more consistent stitch and would have been better for decorative stitching because of this. When I complained about this, a dealer mentioned that Bernina had changed the design of the tension disks when they brought out the 334DS; from flat to convex. I cannot verify if this is true. Does anyone here know?

The only obvious differences between the two models are the exterior color and the easier to thread lower looper on the 334DS.

Will your friend let you try threading and adjusting the tensions on her machine before you decide. There is a lot to learn about using a serger, so most likely it will be frustrating at first. If you are comfortable about learning to thread and adjust tensions, I would definitely advise you to purchase it at $150, especially if it is in good shape.

I would not consider it out of date. It does everything a standard serger does, as well as 2-thread stitching. There are larger sergers that have a third chain stitch looper which make it possible to offer a straight chain stitch, a 5-thread stitch, and on some machines a cover stitch.

What type of sewing do you plan to do? Clothing? Home dec? Decorative? I know it is hard when you haven't used one yet, but can you tell us more about what you are be looking for in a serger?

If the tension adjustments and threading are particularly troublesome for you, and you feel you could never get comfortable doing those things, I would recommend that you find a Babylock Imagine. It does not have tensions (it has a fantastic thread delivery system) and it has jet air threading. The Imagine is very easy to use, has a perfect stitch, and is also great for decorative stitching with decorative threads, but you will pay more.

The sergers I have are Bernette 334DS, Elna 925DCX and Babylock Evolve.

I got a 440 in early Jan. I am just taking the classes now. So far we did a half day on where all the basic controls are. I'm quite amazed at how much is automated like balancing the tension and how smooth the operation of the machine is. Changing feet is also a snap. There's another class next Sat on all the stitches and gizmos and then an afternoon on using the BSR. It might be worth seeing what kind of deal you can strike. I called everyone in my area who sold Berninas and asked who was going to give me the best deal. When I got the best one I thought I could, I took it back to the store nearest to me and they matched it which was interesting because I started with them and they said they couldn't do any better than the MSR price. I will probably still piece with my Husquvarna 545 because I just had a counter built for it in my laundry room and because it's still a wonderful machine too but I'm thinking about sewing more clothes now that I have the Bernina. I have to set it up on my kitchen table but I need that additional space around the sewing machine to machine quilt anyway. Learning to machine quilt and the BSR was why I bought the 440. I considered the embroidery unit for about 5 minutes but I doubt I'd use it much if at all and my computer is a Mac so I passed on it. If I were to spend additional $$$ I'd go for a serger rather than embroidery. I did get the felting foot/plate. I haven't played with it yet.

I noticed a used BSR on C/L a while ago and it was 400 dollars so I can't imagine what they cost new, but I have so many other things to explore before I even think about that! We're still bonding and I played with the embroidery function to see how it worked... used regular thread though, I need to get some embroidery thread for sure, but it was so nice to play with all the editing options and watch it stitch out my name right before my eyes! I used sticky stabilizer so I didn't have to use the top (inside) part of the hoop and it worked perfectly... the towel was too thick to have allowed for the top part of the hoop to be used anyway. I know I'll get better results with embroidery thread and someone suggested using top stabilizer on towels, so I'll do that next time, but still I'm impressed. I noticed one thing it lacks which surprises me. It doesn't have a stop/start button for regular sewing like some of the cheapest Brother and Singers do (even my Brother had that)... you use the reverse button to stop/start for embroidery, but there isn't a way to sew without the foot pedal. I never used that feature anyway because I like to stay in control, but it would be nice to have.

movingwewst is right make sure the thread is settled into the disk properly and threaded through the machine right. also, it is important the order that you thread it. if you are looking at the machine you have two needle threads #1 & #2 then the lower and upper loopers #3 & # 4. you need to thread in a certain order. First thread #3 then #4, then #1 & #2. As you thread each one pull the thread to the back of the foot. hope this helps Bonnie
