Serger threading

I have a new serger, a Bernina 1300. It's my first. I have threaded it several times, and I think I'm threading it correctly, but no chain forms. Each time, the thread wraps around a small horizontal bar behind the needles--in what I believe is called the throat plate.

Can anyone help?

even the tiniest variation in threading can cause problems. Make sure you have followed the exact order, that all the threads are engaged in the tension disks and that the threads cross in the right direction. Bernina's(my opinion) are particularly hard to thread. Since my bernina was my third serger I sold it and kept the elnas.

movingwewst is right make sure the thread is settled into the disk properly and threaded through the machine right. also, it is important the order that you thread it. if you are looking at the machine you have two needle threads #1 & #2 then the lower and upper loopers #3 & # 4. you need to thread in a certain order. First thread #3 then #4, then #1 & #2. As you thread each one pull the thread to the back of the foot.

I don't do a lot of hand quilting but I have done a wall hanging and a few minis. Obviously NOT a hand quilting expert, but I think you can use any thread you want as long as you like the way it looks. Finer thread will almost disappear into the fabric but if your batting has some loft the quilting pattern will show. Heavier thread will show up and the stitches become part of the pattern. Try it on a sample and see if you like it. If the quilt police show up at your house, tell them to go away and come back when they have a warrant! Kate

Can you by pass the "pump" and do it manually??/ I don't have one like that but i assume it's a self threader,by pushing a button or something and the air sucks it through.Is that correct?? Did you buy it from your local dealer,if so give them a phone call and maybe they can shed some light on why it's not working and talk you through it over the phone.HTH Kathi

I often use matching spool thread in the just the needle and serge as usual, but I often use four spools of thread when I want the inside of the garment to match and look good but don't want or can't find four cones of serger thread. A couple tricks: Use the discs provided with the serger; make sure the tiny slit that holds the thread securely on the spool faces down on the spindle; put the disc on the spindle on top of the spools so the thread goes on the outside of the disc. Finally, serge a little slower than you normally would. If your beautiful new Janome didn't come with discs, you can buy them at JoAnn. Bonnie is right that serger thread is lighter than spool thread, but if you go a little slower and make sure the slit is down you should have good luck with regular thread. Sherry

I just googled your machine and it looks like it's all color coded for the threading,so like the op said,make sure the threads are settled into the tension disks correctly.Good luck

Are your needles inserted all the way in? That is somethimes the culprit behind loops and chains that don't form correctly.

Just a suggestion. If you do get it threaded right - and I hope you do - take a digital photo of it and take several. I think If I had had the camera back when I had my serger I'd still have my serger.
