Jazzing up my boring Island...what to do and purchase

Hi all..LMAO..what a process picking a white..

Iam going for marscapone by Benjamin Moore..no more am I going to think of the white..no more..no more..LOL did I say no more?

White cabinets-

Okay now the island

Remember all my cabinets are that light honey oak - so goal revamp this 90's kitchen

Where do I purchase those things to run down the side of my island cabinet. What are they called. Will breadboard the sides but want to add something down the corner under the granite- granite only has a 1 inch over hang or so maybe 2 inches so can't do corbels..etc

If the granite is already on the island, then you don't have room for decorative posts, even split ones, or plinths and columns. It would require redoing the island top to be larger or cut to the exact fit of the posts. You could do a butcher block top to keep it low cost, and it would be a great warm detail to add to your kitchen since you are painting over the wood that is existing.

See how the fluted columns and plinth blocks here are take up room against the cabinets. If you added them after the island was done, the island top would need to be 6" larger.

Just a gorgeous paint color can really jazz up an existing island without having to go overboard on decorative details. (And see how the warm butcher block really works here.)

Again thank you for hopping in and helping me..
The photo with the purple island.. What are those things called running down the side of the island? Couldn't I just attach something like that to the side of the cabinet? If it were a cut in half thing? LOL..another words thinner piece?

I have ugly Dakota granite and oak cabinets- painting them white and want a different colored and distressed island. I will add photo..oh and changing the kitchen wall paint and adding backsplash to jazz and date up my kitchen...

Just thought I could add some kind of decorative pieces to the side of the island too..and sides with bead board? Maybe?

Hi, I'm a Realtor, been going into other people's houses for a number of years, did a bit of property management, & here's what I've learned: Warm tones go with warm tones, & cool with cool. Bright white goes through periods when everybody wants it, & then after they've cleaned it for a year or so, nobody wants it! Plus, if a white is too "clean", it'll make furnishings look dingy. It's a cool-to-cold color, not inviting at all. (Think laboratories.) Warm colors are more inviting & they'll harmonize with the warm golden & brown wood floors. The medium-light warm neutrals will go with most people's stuff, & they'll go with the floors. The kitchen has the potential to be very charming. You might get some ideas by searching for images of kitchens in the 1900's or the 1940's... but there again, warm neutrals will probably be better for a rental. If the budget will stretch to new kitchen flooring, you might get rid of that cold-looking gray & replace it with a good grade of vinyl (Congoleum used to have a product that will outlast us all) in a warm color & a "vintage" pattern, or even install those linoleum squares like you see in school cafeterias. They would look appropriate for the age of the building, you can move the fridge without tearing the flooring, & that stuff lasts forever.

Thank you tnfarmhousefixin! I agree the gallery wall looks off. If I do keep the family photos, it needs to be completely redone. And yes to bringing the pics closer together! We do not enter/exit through the front door. Like ever. We come in and out though out garage Front door if pretty much only for visitors/guests. Are you suggesting a table on one of the walls that flanks the dining room? I just don't think that will work bc it's a main walkway. However, I am interested in replacing the entry way table I already have. That one is just a little small. (It's "original Thomasville, lol, from my parents! Easily 40 years old:)

About accent color, I say, pick a favorite color of yours. Don't ask other people what color you should pick. It has to be something you like. I have read, " take a look, in your clothes closet. Whatever colors are dominant, that is what you will most likely want in your home. Of course, not blacks or Browns, but you get the idea. And yes, do something about that awful overhuang, it's a real distraction from the rest of the kitchen. I can't not focus on it.

Definitely in need of some lighting that is much larger and more grand, but not gaudy flanking the entry vs. the smaller lights on this large home. New landscape with uplighting of trees and home after you get a professional landscaper(s) out to work on your landscape with you and their thoughts. Then proper uplighting of your trees and home will make it lovely. Larger longer outdoor wall sconces.... The photo of the above home is in an area such as Florida or other which yours is obviously not by the surroundings and plantings... However, just an example of the right landscape and the uplighting of the home.

Here's my kitchen I would love to update with paint, backsplash...

What would you do with some buckets of paint and a backsplash?

Your kitchen is actually pretty nice. The biggest sin it suffers from is lack of proper lighting. I'd focus on adding under cabinet lighting, an actual hood over the island as a focal point, and additional recessed lights before doing anything else. It will make a HUGE difference. HUGE. You might even enjoy the warmth that the wood cabinets bring to the space then!

The next suggestion that I would make would be to purge your kitchen of everything that you haven't used in over a year and get those cupboards cleaned out so that 90% of everything that you have on the counters has a home behind doors. Take down all of those too busy decor items everywhere, but especially on the end wall and above the cabinets.

And then before doing any long and involved labor job painting those cabinets or spending the 5K to have it done professionally, I'd just focus on changing the island a bit. I think that painting it the red of the wall and topping it with butcher block would work well whether you kept the cabinets as is or painted them. Start the cabinet changes there, and then stop and judge the difference made and then adjust any plans.

BTW, the purple island looks like they used newel posts from a hardware store and then painted them and the cabinet to match. Even split newel posts will be about 1 1/2" thick for the small ones. With only 1" of overhang on your island, and you wanting to add things to it, I'd really recommend changing the countertop. I think butcherblock is a great suggestion for that.
