Funny Story!

This week is Vacation Bible School at church (I need a vacation after 6 nights with 2 & 3 year olds, LOL. I made pillowcase dresses for our only 2 toddler girls in the church. One lives with a grandmother who's on disability and the other one has somebody who routinely sews for her(a family friend). The one who's use to handmade things loved her dress,(The frog one), so much that she slept in the first night and wore it the next. I'm also making her a new tote bag and she picked out the fabric from our stash and then asked was I bringing it the next night. I had to laugh, when they're that little they have no concept of time! VBS every night til 9pm and work all day long does not leave anytime for sewing this week!

I told her I'd make it sat. and I'm sure she'll be waiting on Sunday morning!

Not being judgemental,but i never heard of VBS at night.Every place i've ever lived it's always been in the daytime,thank goodness!!!
Good for you for sewing for the girls,all little girls love pretty dresses.At least til they're about 10.LOL

When your gifts are so wanted (she even slept in her new dress!) it just makes you want to do more, doesn't it.

Kathi, our VBS is at night too because I live in a small town and most everyone works in the day time. So to have enough workers, it has to be scheduled at night.

LOL, just saw this thread was popping up again. Buford, I also FREQUENTLY use the timer feature when I'm out using drip irrigation, soaker hoses, etc....I've got so many all over the place that it's impractical right now to buy timers for every single one. That's a great idea about the zippered or velcro pockets. I will only wear blue jean pants in the garden, even in hot weather just because I'm always on my knees so pants and sometimes knee pads protect from sharp objects. And I don't want to contend with bug bites either which they prevent. I'm pretty handy though, I bet I could sow on my own zippered pocket if I couldn't find any cheapo jeans that had it already. Herboil, that's an interesting theory about the cell phone waves. I had heard that idea before several years ago when people were starting to realize the honey bee populations were dropping. I hadn't heard much about it lately.

Leslie, my son was bitten by a tick last summer. It took them some time to figure it out. He was looked at by local doctors and of course this is Hicksville as far as healthcare. They finally sent him to one of the best hospitals in Missouri and he was diagnosed. By that time,the infection had eaten into the bones in his neck and he had to have surgery to clean that out,and they had to put plates in. He was very ill and nearly died. After he was sent home he was on an antibiotic drip twice a day for 6 weeks. It was a horrible time for all of us,and I still get shaky thinking how close to death he was. Those ticks can be dangerous!!!!

DH and I are in our mid-50s and have shared tables both at home and while we're travelling. In crowded cafes either we've asked if we could have the spare seats at someone already seated's table, or we've invited people who are obviously looking for a seat to make use of our spare seats. We've even changed our seats around to make room for others. We don't necessarily start up a conversation with the other people beyond a few remarks, but it wouldn't occur to us to refuse to share if the place was crowded. On a similar note, we were in a tiny indie cinema with three long (about 10 or 12 seats) row of seats across the space. Being so small, and the movie quite popular, it was pretty well full, in fact there were only two seats left, one at either end of the row DH and I were sitting in (I was next to one of the empty seats). In walked a couple, obviously nonplussed at the potential seating disaster. So I called to the rest of the people in the row, "Could everyone please move down one seat so these people can sit down?" Everyone seemed ready to do just that until the lady sitting at the opposite end announced she couldn't move down one because the seat next to her was (for some reason) higher than the others (by about 4") and if she sat in it her feet wouldn't touch the floor. So I said "Well then, everybody move up one, I'll sit in the wretched seat and DH can sit next to me and that will leave two seats at this end for these people." So we all moved, I got the high seat which, even though I have short legs, wasn't really that bad- I certainly didn't notice it. But the lady who didn't want to move would not shut up about it! All through the movie, she kept muttering to her friend things along the lines of "Well, I couldn't move, my feet just wouldn't have touched the floor!" etc. I felt like saying, for Pete's sake, give it a rest already! Problem solved! Everyone happy! (well, except her, I guess).

what was the reaction of the other little girl? You never mentioned it. I just bet the first little one will be wearing her froggie dress every church day from now on....you are doing a tote....how about a little hat? Even just one of those little triangle kerchiefs we used to wear as teens? Really make her a show stopper...all you'd need is a little triangle and some matching bias tape (between you and your mom you must have something!!)...OK I was just thinking what a slash little girl one would make with that get up!! I think you are very caring doing this sewing for others...bet they will remember you in their prayers. Budster

The other little girl really didn't have much to say. They're both 3 years old. The one who lives with her grandmother told her grandmother it was a "church dress". When she noticed Lauren wearing her's she said to me "you made me one of those". So she understands that it was made for her.
I think our VBS is at night because of the amount of people who work that volunteer. When I was a kid 100 years ago (OK 30 years ago), our church did it at night, we were in town. The rural church my mother grew up in, did it during the day and all of the ladies who helped had never worked outside of the home. I don't remember any men assisting at my grandmother's church and we have a fair amount of men helping at our church now. I bet 25% of the workers were men. I think that's good for these children to see positve male role models.
Well, I'm going to try to grill lunch before the rain (from hurricaine? Arlene) gets here in central AL, then I'm going to sew in the rain as long as the power holds out!

We have VBS at night and in the daytime (coming up week after next). I think we have around 700 kids registered.

That is so neat! I love it. She sounds like a sensitive appreciative child. I'd like to see what a pillowcase dress is too.

Every church we've been in since dd#2 was 2 or 3 has had evening Bible School. A sign of the times I guess. I didn't know anyone had morning Bible School any more, which was definitely my preference when the girls were young & I didn't want them eating sugar at night & then getting them to bed late. But oh well, it was just one week of the summer.

our VBS is at night, too. Bcs nearly everybody works, and parents have day camp or babysitters in the day. Daytime VBS is actually high-maintenance for moms, unless it's all-day VBS (and THAT is really hard to do for 5 days straight). Because you have to get them there (but not too early, so you have to go in to work late); then you have to pick them up, and get them over to whatever childcare you've arranged, and then get back to work.

Not to mention, as LoganHogan did, that those of us who VOLUNTEER at VBS usually have jobs.

Guess i've been out of the child care loop to long to realize that it(vbs) is held at night.We still have daytime ones around here and i never really paid any attention to night time activities.Live and learn!!!

We also have VBS in the evenings for our kids. I tell you, that was the longest week! It started immediately after school got out, and my kids are used to being in bed about 8ish or so. So when VBS is from 6-9, my son was so tuckered out & cranky by the end of the week. But he still had a great time!!!!
