Coolest recycling cabinet I've seen

Found this on the Downsview cabinet website. Combines recycling, trash, and compost.

Why was I looking at a cabinet website, you might ask, when I just moved into my house 3 months ago? Well, I have been having problems with my cabinet doors. I have white shaker and where the stiles meet at the corners I am getting not only lines, but splits between the two pieces of wood. As this is just not acceptable after such a short time (it started in February) and the KD has been a PITA, my builder is just making him replace all my doors with those from Downsview (his high end line).

Rachel- Sorry to hear about your cabinets. Your kitchen is so beautiful and I am sad for you that you haven't been able to JUST enjoy it.

From someone who has been composting kitchen waste before it was fashionable... it can't be done in any sort of plastic. Plastic is porous and absorbs chemicals and odors that can't be cleaned.

I have a stainless steel container for this. A converted ice bucket for wine.

NORPRO has "stolen my idea" and is now selling a dedicated stainless steel counter compost container.

Hostagrams, is there anyway you can find another tri can spinner for your new home? I think I'd be tempted to take the old one with me. If you're home hasn't been sold yet take it out before you show it again and it's legally yours unless already stipulated in the sales contract. Thanks for the link too! Plow, sounds like you have a great system going for you. Along with your recycling service. I do say I miss it coming to our home like it did in the city, but it's nice to know here it helps support 4H. It's worth the drive into town. Cyn, now that you mention numbers one and two I should ask if they do more. I was only going by what the city took. Hubby just went up this past Saturday so it will be a few weeks before we go up there again, but maybe they have a website I should check. I'm glad you mentioned that. Thanks! Seasyde, thanks for the link. I'll check that out. I'm so tired of having to cruch them by stepping on them. Hubby has been doing it lately since I wear my Bass thongs all summer long and they and crushing just don't go together. I'd either twist my ankle or hurt the shoes, though they are sturdy (I replace them about once every decade) I don't want to take the chance. Mommabird, you don't mean Columbus, Nebraska, by any chance, do you? Jak 1 sounds like you have a great system too. We have bins just out side the door to the garage, but we were lucky and found a drawer type unit that works great. Never thought of adding shelves right out side the door for purchased bins. At the time we bought ours we were having trouble finding anything aimed at recycling. I'm guessing it's easier now. We found the bin storage at Home Depot for only $19.99 about five years ago. I wish I'd seen those before we built. Merillat didn't have that option but we could have installed it ourselves. We have the double trash pullout for recyclables, but I forgot that CT has bottle deposit so instead of newspapers one gets used for soda cans. Trash is under the sink. But I may change out the 18" double trash pullout to pullout drawers and replace the LS in the corner with a 3-4 bin trash/recycle when we get new countertops in a few years! Does anybody know if you have to pull the countertop off to get these in, or is there a telescoping rod with a cotter pin that can just be pulled out? Also, the inside of my corner cabinet is curved - is that a problem for the bins?

Gaaa, another decision to make! I'm glad you posted for help, aek9y, because otherwise this detail might have slipped by me. Is the Double Electric Assist Waste Containers that Rev-a-Shelf charges a ridiculous amount of money the same thing? Does anyone know if we accomplish the same thing with the Double Bottom Mount Rev-A-MotionÃ¢ÂÂ¢ Wood Waste Containers with the IKEA Utrusta added to it? It might save us a little money but what it will gain us is a 1 1/4" of height, which will help since we're putting a pull-out garbage unit in our sink base beneath an undermount Silgranite sink (on the left side of a right drain sink). We're fine with 35 qt cans. We currently only have a 20 qt can under our sink. We won't have height issues with our other garbage pull-out in the island. We need 4 bins for garbage, mixed recycling, glass recycling and returnables and putting one beneath our sink was the only way to get 2 pull-outs in without giving up other much-needed storage. Would someone please measure the distance from the top of the can to the cab frame for the drawer above for me? I keep looking at the photos but I can't tell how much room there is between can and cab top to know what is possible for my situation. Thank you!

I love them!! I have always wanted to use these in a kitchen. I don't think I'd like them on every drawer though. I have always thought that they would look best in a kitchen that's designed to look "unfitted," combining different furniture pieces and cabinet styles. Someone on the forum had an old general store counter or something that she used as an island, and I think it had the cute little label holders on the drawers. Does anyone else remember that? It was a pretty little green breakfast room, the island was black, she had soapstone and a white shelf unit on the wall, with copper pots and things here and there. I wish I could remember who that was. I'll try and find it in the FKB for you. Meanwhile, I say go for it, but maybe not on all your drawers.

The idea of compost materials sitting in a cabinet grosses me out. I've been composting for 25 years. I used a Rubbermaid container for years, but now keep a decorative ceramic bowl on the counter to collect stuff through the day. It gets emptied at least once a day. Have a copper compost pail under the sink for those times when the weather is too inclement, but I keep it topside when in use.

That is a Hafele product. If you go to Hafele catalog, under waste management, they have that as a product that you can buy.

You can actually take out the compost bin from this bin and put it topside when in use.

Regarding compost, I know that there are folks that don't like to have it in their cabinet bins but I have it inside the cabinet in a bin with odor filter. I am okay with it. I line it with biodegradable compostable liner (sold for such use) and toss the entire thing into the city compost. I do agree that it absorbs odor over time. YMMV.

Blum and Ikea have this too. The Ikea version is $, the Blum version is $$$.

I do think that is a really cool recycling set up.

As far as compost, after trying different methods for 30 years, I like this pivot out waste container the best. I used an old stainless stockpot on our counter for years and years then graduated to Norpro with filter (I loved the filter) and then to this. The lid lifts off when the door is swung open so there is no lid to deal with and to put down on the counter (my lids got pretty yucky at times.) I can usually get the door open with my pinky when my hands are gunky or are full of scraps. The weight of the pail is not on the door--the pail is supported by a bracket screwed into the cabinet itself. This one if made by Rev a Shelf. I don't find any problem with the plastic liner pail--no odor is retained as far as I can tell. There is no filter but the lid seems to keep the odors contained.

I wouldn't want an in-counter system. It's too permanent. What if you decide to switch to something else (i.e. worms or whatever else is coming down the road)? A business friend put this type of system in 25 years ago and stopped using it after a couple of years (not because she stopped composting--she was an avid composter and gardener) and was stuck with the hole in her counter.
