Annie's punch list
Comments (45)In the past couple of weeks, I have knocked a ton of stuff off my punch list. DS' ceiling was cracked and needed re-plastering, but knowing that he was going away to college this fall, we held off until he was gone. He also had really old wallpaper in his room. So we got the ceiling fixed, called the painter and had the wallpaper stripped and walls/trim repainted. Which of course led to a massive purge of stuff and a bit of redecorating but not too much -- I didn't want him to think I've turned his room into a guest room already! While the painter was here, I decided to have him paint the dining room, since it hadn't been painted in forever. More purging and redecorating. And a new rug. And a new lamp. The painting was done last week. I also bought new lighting for the kitchen. On Friday, the electrician came and installed new pendant lights and new wall sconces, and re-installed the ceiling fixture in DS' room. Yesterday, the landscapers came and replaced almost all of our front yard shrubs. Most of what was out there was an overgrown mess and/or had been dying. Today, I planted about 120 tulip bulbs in among the new shrubs. Also today the window cleaning company came for a long-overdue whole-house window washing. DD said "why are so many workers coming to our house, like, every day?" A couple of weeks ago, I cleaned out my bedroom closet. On Tuesday, one of the local charities is coming to pick up the stuff I have been purging. Tomorrow, cleaning guy is coming and as you can imagine, the house is pretty dusty from all of the above. Tomorrow afternoon I will rejoice that I have no "workers" coming for the foreseeable future!...See MoreInstalling shelf: How to nail (properly) into plaster?
Comments (6)DeirdreLousiville, You will need to predrill into the brick, then put a brick anchor into the hole. Then use a screw to screw into your brackets, then into the anchor you just put in. Drywall anchors are usually plastic with a rounded end. Brick/cement anchors are usually straight tubes of plastic. They can also be lead. As for the screw, use a wood screw. I use drywall screws if the load isn't too much. You might want to use a wood screw as they are thicker, draperies can get quite heavy if it's for a wide window and the drapes are made of a thick, heavy material....See MoreI now have 6 or so holes on the south wall of my closet!
Comments (10)thx for the thumbs up on it idie! I just gotta get to lowe's soon. planned on going last wk and didn't make it there. I'd sure better this wk! I did manage to get the 2 lower shelves up in my bdrm closet today. it was rough going tho. It took about 5 1 x 2's to finish it. 3 tossed to the wayside with a screw stuck in 'em. couldn't get them to back out. will leave that for the 'strong man' to deal with. When I looked closer at them it seems they are from a harder wood. why didn't I pay attention to that when I bought them? ugh. i thought they all came from the same stack. i did have 2 of softer wood that I could get up on the back wall. One side of each ended up with just a partial support underneath. I'll change that out when I get 2 longer pieces to put in. I could have had them today if I weren't chicken to run the saw. It looked really great to have those 2 shelves up in there. that gives me 16.5 ft of storage space (the floor and on each 5' plus shelf). I think I'll put a metal brace under both of them at about the middle point - just to be safe. Tomorrow I'll double check what I'll need to finish up the shelves and make a new list - including a stud finder....See Morescrappy25 renovation Part 4, final reveal, white inset/soapstone
Comments (99)OP here. My Julia soapstone from Stonemasters in Kennet Square, PA, which I picked for the hardness, has only one tiny chip on the flat counter that you can't see unless you look for it. I had the fabricators round over all the edges and there are no edge or corner dings. It has only had three applications of the oil wax mixture on it in over three years and is truly a no-maintenance counter. We put hot pots on it, have had lost of spilled juices and sauces, tomato and red wine, and continual coffeemaker drips, but all clean up without problems. Sorry to hear that dataw1127 did not have the same experience. Stonemasters had given me 2x2 inch samples of all their soapstones and I took them home and experimented before choosing the one with lowest maintenance. Maybe that is a key to selecting soapstone? PS I also had my overhanging counter corners rounded and did not realize what a difference that made until this past week when I stayed at my sister in law's home and banged my hips several times on her very sharp 90 degree granite counter corners. Apparently her 4 year old grandchild had a bad run in with them earlier also but with his head. Thankfully he is OK....See Moreroof35
