Sorry, that should have been 1/2" not 1/4" seams. You're right, this may just have been the pattern - hard to tell how baggy the pants were supposed to be with the model wearing a longer top over them. The drawings didn't look that full. Pattern just says "use flame retardant fabrics" so not specifically for knits - how do you adjust a "woven" pattern for a knit? Stretch the knit as you cut? I measured crotch depth on some of DD's (fleece) pants and the size 5 pattern was only 1" more, those pants were getting a little small so I figured it would be OK for loose sweats. Didn't know how to measure crotch length, but took her pants, folded them in half with center back seam sticking out and it seemed to match the curve of the size 5 pretty well, she needs the room in the bum. The finished product just seemed to have too much fabric in the small of the back so I took it in with a dart. Same thing with the front. I have Simplicity Simply the Best book and looked at crotch depth and length adjustments, so I can measure DD and the pattern for next time (using flannel or fleece). But would you allow the 1.5" - 2" ease for a child? or less? And how would I measure the front? I can get overall crotch length, but DD needs that mainly in the bum, not the front or the lower back. So even if I made more than half the measurement in the back rather than splitting it evenly, how do I account for her booty/sway back? Thanks.

This is very hard to do, because you would have excess fabric on the folded back part of the cuff in the back, especially if you use a 1 inch hem. In addition the front would be short of fabric. Your only option would be to put in a narrow hem and ease in the excess fabric, and have the seams on an angle. If these are dress pants I suggest you take them to a seamstress to hem. Have you thought what shoes you are limited to with such a hem. Pants hemmed like that could only be worn with heels or the back would trail on the ground. For myself I would hem them like regular pants.

If you can find a set of the old attachments which came with some of the vintage sewing machines there were several different hemming attachments in the sets. I have a hemming attachment which can turn under a 1/8" rolled hem and sew it down in one procedure about as fast as fabric can be fed into the machine. There are different widths available from the really narrow 1/8" hem up to about an inch and a half hem. Saves tons of pinning! One set of these attachments is from my Singer treadle sewing machine and the other more complete set is from my White Rotary Treadle so if you can't find these attachments at a sewing center, perhaps an antique store would have them, they are worth looking for. Occasionally they will show up at garage sales or rummage sales and many times folks don't know what they do so they will let you have the whole set for fifty cents or so.

I have read about putting in a new hem and then distressing the new hem. I haven’t tried it, but I’m posting it below if you want to try. Fortunately, I’ve found a brand of jeans that are the correct length on me, Talbot’s Slim Ankle Jeans. From Reddit: You can mimic the wear on the hem of jeans by washing them, then going at the folds that occur with sandpaper or nail files. For more distressing, try a microplane cheese grater. The folds are from the way the denim shrinks, it's a twill so it goes a bit diagonal when the weft shrinks. While I don’t mind the look of a raw hem, I tried to DIY a pair of jeans. I thought it looked like I had cut off a pair of jeans and failed to hem them.
