your favorite sewing machine & serger??

We are planning to invest in a good machine within the next 6 months so my dh has asked me to do research on brands, features, etc.

Can you please share your recommendations?

I will also be purchasing a serger. Thanks in advance,

I just purchased a Husqvarna Viking Designer I and am totally in love....and it is quite an investment, so check it out!!! $5900.00

I have an old pre-WWII model singer treadle which I use when I feel nostalgic. When I was in HS I made petticoats to go under poodle skirts with it..and made pretty good money. Also made most of my own clothes. I also have a Necchi Elna which is about 40 years old. It works beaufully, but does not handle heavy fabrics well. Tension problems..it won't climb over the seams. I don't do much sewing anymore, but the maintenance man told me to keep it..it's all metal and made to last.

And how nice a machine is that! You did a great job researching and deciding what would work best for you and your sewing needs. Your dealer sounds like a perfect match and will be a great resource for you. Ah I should warn you once you awake your creative side a monster will appear and there will be nothing stopping you! You will have some problems and things won't always turn out PERFECT but with everything you make you will be adding to your store of sewing knowledge. I can't believe how few said the finished product! I love fabric and I like to see how it "Looks" when it all comes together. As far as sounds go I too enjoy the sound of the machine motor as I fell asleep to the sound the first 22 years of my life. I also like the way the heavy duty scissors (ie. weiss & gingher) sound when you lay them back down on the sewing machine cabinet. I know, it's crazy, but I like that sound the best. Maybe as a kid that's what I associated with Mother(Joansews) and MaMa getting close to being done with something new for me! Susan in Bama

I got one with my Brother machine, too. It was really difficult to figure out how to use it, and the one skirt I sewed using had the seams come apart (the fabric unravelled). So now I have a $200 serger and it works great! Donna

It might be a good idea to set a budget. There are good quality basic machines for under $1000. If you want to spend under $500, you are probably looking at a reconditioned trade in. If you want an electronic machine, you will be spending over $1000, on up to the price level ngmnewlywed listed. But it is not necessary to spend that much to get a decent sewing machine unless you want all the bells and whistles including advanced embroidery capability. I am a part time student at a fashion design program, and very few people in my classes have a machine like that.

There is also the issue of getting an industrial machine.
They sew much faster -- but do cost more.

You might look online at Allbrands to see what is available. On the other hand, having a local dealer is a distict advantage when you have questions or want support.

Juki 9010, needle-feed industrial with automatic backtack and undertrimmers. I LOVE it! Fast, quiet, and completely contained, no need to oil anything, ever.

I have a Willcox&Gibbs 5 thread overlock, model#500-4, type 515. (I bought it as a 4 thread, and had the spreader replaced with another looper). This is an older model (20-25 years?), but it's fast and easy to operate.

I have a Babylock Ellageo Sewing and Embroidery Machine. I absolutely love it. It may not be a commercial machine but I have a home business and have put it through it's paces. So far no problems and I've had it for almost a year. I also have a Babylock imagine SergerI don't use it all that much yet but when I have it has done a wonderful job. ( I want to take a serger class soon).
