2 questions - clearance near hood and whether to panel

Hi,

I have 2 questions about the cabinets by a stainless hood.

I will have a 36" hood and 30" adjacent cabinets, currently with 1" clearance between the hood and cabinet.

The cabinetmaker is asking whether to add a half inch clearance on either side.

1. Any reason to make this change? Adjacent cabs would become 29.5". Seems like it should be ok as is??

2. I think he originally had the adjacent cabs without panels, and I indicated I wanted panels. I've been looking at some pics and see some are not paneled. What would be the normal thing to do here? Cabinets to start very soon, so in my world, this is when I start questioning things! :)

Our cabs butt right up to the hood.
Here's a shot.

I'm not sure why you'd leave just 1".
How would you get in there to clean?

The hood I'm using is a chimney hood (I think that's what it's called) --- with the tapered look - no cabinetry above. I will have backsplash up to the 9' ceiling, behind the hood.

To be honest, I'm not worried about cleaning it, so I'm ok with the 1", as long as that works. This is the way he has had it from the start, but now that we are finalizing, he's bringing up some final questions. I'm not sure why he was suggesting another half inch - but maybe because I asked for finished panels!!

I know a sheet of metal roofing would hold the water away from the roof. I guess if I was careful I might be able to just use the metal and one piece of glazing. But wouldn't another piece of insulation under the metal make it more efficient? Bending the edges up just a bit might make me less paranoid about leaks. Another option as apposed to screws is to use construction adhesive. It is really tough stuff. You folks are making me itchy to get out in my shop. After X-mas maybe. I think I should probably build a very small experimental trickle through collector just to try it out and see how I do with leakage. about the "sky cooling" . . . It all makes sense for the most part. Though biology is more my thing than physics. If you wouldn't mind explaining a bit more I would appreciate it. I am having trouble connecting the cooling of the panel with your explanation karen. So lets say you have a panel that is circulating warmish water in it that you want to cool down. You put it on the shady side of the house on a day when the air temperature is greater than the temperature of the water you want to cool off. So the water molecules release IR radiation into the panel and the panel passes that IR on to the air. The air is made up of all sorts of stuff, oxygen, nitrogen, CO2, water vapor & then a bunch of trace stuff. So here comes our IR wave and it runs into a gas molecule. With sunlight the gas molecules would absorb some energy and start bouncing around faster. We would measure this as a higher air temperature with a thermometer. I would imagine that the with the air being warmer than the water in the panel it would do the same thing in terms of energy transfer and warm up the water. Does IR work differently? Do some gases reflect the IR or not interact with it at all? This seems to be the key paragraph that is confusing me. "Now, not only are things on the surface radiating, but things above you are as well. However, the atmosphere isn't a nearby solid (ARE YOU IMPLYING THAT THE ATMOSPHERE RADIATES DIFFERENTLY BECAUSE IT IS A GAS INSTEAD OF A SOLID?). You're getting radiation from a broad range of particles, from ones radiating right above you, further, further, and further away, all the way out to the frigid edge of the atmosphere and beyond. It is the net radiation of these particles that matters in determining how much incoming infrared is absorbed by something that faces skyward (SO YOU ARE SAYING THAT THE NET INCOMING RADIATION FROM THE ATMOSPHERE IS LEss THAN THE OUTGOING RADIATION FROM THE PANEL?)." I am still a bit lost. Sorry for needing so much explanation. If you ever have frog questions feel free to ask and maybe I can reciprocate a bit.

My answer is yes, there are too many lookalikes. I was all set to blame the hosta registrar for all the duplicates. As I understand it, a hosta is supposed to be unique to be registered. However, I did not find where it said that on the registrar's website. It looks like you just send in your completed form, $5.00 and a photo of a mature clump and you're in business. But, registration isn't necessary to sell you product commercially. Neither Dream Queen or Thunderbolt is registered. I bought Dream Queen at a local nursery. Also, Paula bought Sun Hosta at Walmart. It is not registered, but is patented. It's supposed to be a sport of So Sweet. It looks exactly like So Sweet to me. It does really well in the heat, though, as does So Sweet. Looks like free enterprise to me. After looking around, it doesn't appear that things won't change. They're going to keep finding sports in tissue culture. Most of the TC people have access to the growers or are the growers, so they'll keep pushing the new ones out there, even if they are not as good as the oldies. The hybridizers will keep dabbing pollen, looking for the perfect hosta. The casual hosta grower like me will find a new sport once in a while. We will keep getting new hosta and the old ones will continue to go away. I used to grow African Violets. One of the really popular ones at the time was Tommie Lou. It was a plain dark green leaf with white speckles and white double flowers, if I remember correctly. You can't buy it anymore. We're people. We're fickle. We crave recognition. We enjoy achievement. Thanks for bringing this to my attention - I just bought a new (but discontinued model) Dacor 27" integrated warming drawer for $188! Also re Amex warranty...Visa Signature cards also extends warranty by 1 year on most purchases...but they do have an exclusion for "Real estate and items which are intended to become part of real estate including, but not limited to, items that are hard-wired or hard-plumbed, garage doors, garage door openers, and ceiling fans." So, appliances that you plug in should be covered, but ones you hardwire (like range hoods and most wall ovens) are not. Amex is clearly the better benefit, if you have an Amex card already.

If you cook a lot that spatters or use spray on vegetable oils you are setting yourself up for misery with the window. I would move the fridge to the right of the double ovens (losing that cabinet and put the stove where the fridge is. That would work better with a sink on the island. I like the idea of the island sink provided you get one big enough to be usable. You can get a cutting board to cover it-to look flush when not in use. (There is even a push down faucet if you really want everything flush but you have to devote more space to the sink area, not woth it in my opinion.) Are there two cooks or just one? If two a corner sink would give both a landing area, if one, then there should be a landing area on both sides. How big is the island? Are there other cabinets in this room on another wall?

If you're doing a chimney as a feature piece, I prefer to havea minimum of 3" of clearance between it and the adjacent cabinets. 6" is better and allows it the backsplash tile and hood to actually be seen and appreciated.

1" is way too small. You WILL need to clean the grease off of the cabinet side, and you will cuss every single time you try to do that with that little space.

I don't know..... I just don't see myself getting upset about not being able to clean something....

I was debating about a half inch -- to go even more and lose more cabinet space..... hmm..... not sure about that.

The hood is also pretty low profile I think - "Zephyr 36" Savona Wall Mount Stainless Steel Chimney Hood - ZSAM90BS".

Will have to think about that.... need to decide soon. Thanks

We have a 36" wide chimney hood over a 30" wide range. In the original plan I had specified that I wanted at least 3" between the adjacent cabinet and the hood. I wanted the hood to look like it was floating in the space.

As it turned out, I have only a 2" gap between the cabinet and the chimney hood. 2 inches is fine and I can slip by hand between the chimney and the cabinet to clean. So, the extra space would be nice. But... I would hate to lose the cabinet space. How is that for inconclusive advice?

slightly off topic, please excuse me seosmp:

willtv, do your cabinet doors hit your vent hood? How do they turn on their hinge? I've heard of using door bumper pads to keep doors from hitting the sides also. thanks.

SparklingWater, Yes the doors do hit the hood.
Up until this point I've been very careful to not do that, but the other member of my household, DW, isn't so diligent so I'm installing some cable restraints to prevent the doors from opening more than 90 degrees.

I agree that you will need to clean there, and I'm NOT one for excessive cleaning. ;-) We are going with 3 inches on each side of the hood so I can get my hand in there. 6 would have been even better, but I didn't think of it!

Due to limited space, I went with 0.5" between chimney hood and flanking cabinets.
I didn't want to be flushed just because what if my walls aren't plumb or something, so that 0.5" gave me the relief I may/may not need.

Anything you choose will work: flushed, 0.5", 1", 3" + is all good.

#2: i chose flat panel = easier to clean.
Thought about raised panels, to match the doors, but then I don't want to clean around the edge/bevels, etc.
