Acid Free construction paper?

Has anyone tried using acid free construction paper to scrapbook? Does it work as well as other acid free paper?

I have never seen acid free construction paper. What brand is it? Are you sure it's acid free? I would consider using it if in fact it was acid free and the cost was lower than the cost of the current card stock available. Let me know, Penny

I'm not sure what the brand name is, but I got it a Sam's Club. It's a huge pack (about 700 sheets). It has almost every color you would need to scrapbook. On the package it says "Great for memory books and Scrapbooks." The only problem I have with it is that it's a little bigger than 8 1/2 x 11" so I have to trim it a little to fit my pages. It's a different consistency than regular construction paper-

The reason I asked the question is that before I knew the importance of acid-free products, I tried using regular construction paper, and it faded and yellowed very fast! I wouldn't think these would since they are acid free. Does anyone know? I assume it is the acid that caused the reg. construction paper to fade.

Dear Anne, There are some items that are highly acidic, that I do not reccomend using in scrapbook albums. 1. Newspaper or Magazines, most of these have a LARGE acid content and even with a buffer (acid free paper in between them and the photos) these items put off so much acid that they can in a short time yellow or age everything on that page. Color copy these items and then place the copy in your scrapbook. Kids construction paper, this again is a definite no-no. However the birthday cards and ribbon should be tested with an acid free testing pen. (Price about $2.00) While I have found most ribbon to be acid free, I do not know enough about some types to give this a definite go ahead, the birthday cards are a mixed bag, I have found some really cheap cards that I thought for sure would test positive for acid and they did not, and on the other hand found some really expensive cards that you would have thought would be acid free and they tested positive, so the safest way is to go ahead and test them. If you really would like to add an item that tests positive for acid, then add it to a page that just has journaling on it (in both sides of your page protector), that way you can keep it away from your photos. As for the gel pens, I love them, for a better description of ink go back to an earlier forum question: Am I missing something, I believe that is where you will find the ink discussed, and a link that better explains ink use in scrapbooks. Most computer ink is acid free, the only problem with it is that it is dye based, meaning that the ink dyes the paper, so it can change slightly over time and is not always water or fade proof. As a whole those are the only drawbacks to computer ink, and it is basically safe for your scrapbooks unless you are planning on them getting wet or setting them in the sun for long periods of time. Hey Marie~~Do you have a Michaels or a Hobby Lobby nearby? Walmart even has a scrapbooking section. And there is a wide assortment of acidfree papers, including acid free black construction paper. And there are acid free pens, like gel pens. You can get silver gel pens to do the writing on the black construction paper. But if you don't wanna limit yourself to just black, there's a whole collection of acid free papers in an assortment of colors and prints. There are acid free stamps and everything. And don't forget the acid free binders to hold all your pages. I use regular school notebooks and acid free top-loading protector sheets. That way, I can make my album as big as I want (you can get 1", 2", and 3" notebooks) and they slide right into my book shelf nice and neat. And I can use 8 1/2 x 11 pages, which are just more convenient for me. Oh gosh, Marie, there is so much! Just go browse the scrapbook section and see what all is there. There are stickers and cutouts you can add too and embossing powder and tools and so much more. Go take a look and it's sure to get you addicted! Just holler if you have more questions. NancyAnn

I may be wrong on this, but I thought the lignin in paper made it yellow, not the acid. Any pros out there with a lesson on this?? :)

Lignin is part of the wood pulp in paper. It breaks down very quickly and becomes acidic and brittle and turns yellow (you know how quickly a newspaper will yellow in the sun??? That's the lignin). When looking for scrapbooking paper "acid free" is only one of the attributes to look for. "Lignin free" is another and so is "buffered", which means that any acid that might get on the page from other sources will not migrate through the buffered paper and attack your photographs.

I just recently noticed while going threw my school construction paper stack that they are acid free. I don,t know the brand right off but I will look tomorrow and then post again. I am curious if it safe to use in my scrapbooks? I would hate to use something that will ruin my books! I never realized there was such things as acid free construction paper. If anyone know about the safety of using these in memory books please let me know. Thanks!
