Mom's Kitchen Has Harvest Gold Countertops and Backsplash

Mom wants to freshen up her kitchen but she has Harvest Gold countertops and backsplash. Dad won't change this so we need to work with it. Right now there is wallpaper which is coming down and I want to paint. Problem is, what color for the walls? I have sampled several golds and latte and they all seem to fight with the harvest gold. Any ideas for a paint color? Do I go with a real light yellow or is there a brown that is not to dark that works with the bold. Hope there is some help out there. Here cabinets are dark brown and her flooring is a travertine beigey color which we replaced last year.

What about a tan/taupe that has a golden hue to it?

I saw this on an HGTV website (edited because it was geared towards a harvest gold bathroom) :
The goal is to make the gold look like it belongs there. By staying on the same side of the color wheel as the golds and yellows, you will get the gold to blend in with walls.

Walls can be painted a lighter gold to keep the counters from popping. It could be combined with black, a red, chocolate, or yellow based green like olive or sage, or even a blue.

When harvest gold was popular, it was used with avocado green, and burnt orange. Paired with one of the current popular yellow greens and orange reds is another option for an updated look with the gold.

Or, pair the gold with a color that has a golden undertone, as with the yellow greens or yellowish tans. Accent with a yellow red like russet or orange if looking for a bold stroke.

You can turn to Nature for inspiration. Think sunflowers or black-eyed susans with brown or reddish brown centers and yellow green leaves. Think fall foliage and how well the golds, rusty reds, and browns work together. Tigers are golden, black, and orange!

Tuscan decor is hot! Earthy tones are used. Terracotta, olive green, deep browns as well as blues and gold.

THANKS!! OK...not quite two years...I'm mistaken!! We were 90% finished at the end of November 2007. Still not in the FKB because we have three things left--trim, backsplash, and toe-kick! Uggh!! Although I think a 5, 3 & 1 year-old, plus a husband with a full-time job, and limited budget might have something to do with it ;) Luckily, we have everything we need to finish the kitchen--but those finishing touches are taking a back seat to getting our second bathroom done. Family of five with one TINY bathroom is tough--doable, but tough! Can't WAIT to have our new bath done! And thanks to all for the suggestions!! I found two good tile shops down by my parents (they're about 50 miles north of NYC), so hopefully they'll go this weekend and at least get some ideas. :) Sarah

@ raehelen, Thank you, and YES, I am soooo happy that the granite/BS search is behind me!! LOL @ jancy, the cabinet color that I chose was Coffee Clutch. The code for the color is D1-7. I have read of many others using Bittersweet Chocolate by BM and Black Bean by SW. But, the Coffee Clutch looked great to me at Ace, so I chose it. I did have to sand the cabinets to rough them up, and I primed them with a tinted primer first. I think I used Zinser 123. The cabinet and trim paint goes on really nice. I just brushed it on and it went on nice and smooth. Almost smooths itself out. Just use long strokes and plan on 2 coats. It dries hard and shiny. I did not have to poly over it. I painted them over a year ago and they've held up beautifully! The other nice thing was that the wood grain still shows through. It came out really well. Don't be afraid... go for it!! :)

Hi. We installed out kitchen in 2012. We still haven't chosen or decided on a backslpash - it's the painted wall. I have a creamy Egyptian marble, - don't remember the name. I like unstructured European vintage-y kitchens. Many of them don't have backsplashes either. My stainless range has a stainless backsplash directly behind it. I had picked out some mini-clear glass subway tile for the backsplash that coincidentally matches my Prescott Green paint color perfectly but what if I decide to change wall color one day? Just this week I started thinking maybe I made my backsplash tile decision three years ago which was to have none. Our marble installers tried very hard to discourage us from marble in the kitchen but I have not regretted it. All those kitchens in southern Europe can't be wrong. FYI - If you are considering glass backsplash look at a product call 3-Form it comes in an amazing variety of colors,textures and imbedded items, two good friends used it in their kitchens. http://www.3-form.com/ Do what speaks to you in your home. Travertine can range in price a lot. I loved how neutral and natural it was. Mine is ivory - they have light to dark colors available. I have seen some very budget friendly sales at the big box stores. Any natural stone will need to be sealed. I do that on my floors and counters 2x a year. Please know that sealing takes exactly the same amount of time and effort that cleaning your counter or floors takes. You wipe it on, let it sit a minute, then thoroughly wipe it off. That's it. I have had absolutely NO staining with my marble. We eat at the island every day for most meals. I have 5 teenagers and they frequently have many friends over. There is some etching, but honestly, you have to turn your head to the side and lay it flat on the surface to find them. On the perimeter we put Cambrian Black Antique Granite. LOVE IT!!

If you take a look at these color combinations, many of them use a deep golden yellow that works beautifully with steely blues, sagey greens, darker browns and tans, rusts, etc, as described above. Have fun!
