beginner machine

I was going to get a 6000i but I really dont need most of those stitches. I go to Walmart and all they have is the 2500.

not the 2500i.

Is this thing for about 80 ok for basic stit including jeans??? If you go slow will it break?? I am good mechanically so I could fix basic things. I am not spending

300 bucks on a machine.Its depressing to see so much bad press on these cheap machines...is there an online place for used stuff that is quality..??

There's a reason there's so much bad press on cheap machines. They don't hold up as well & beginners have problems sewing on them, they get frustrated & quit sewing when their time & money are wasted over & over again due to junky machines. The main problem with denim is the hems where you have multiple layers of thick fabric, & the machine bogs down. There are some notions (I use the jeanamajig myself) that help with that problem.

The Brother XL2600I is reviewed pretty thoroughly on amazon.com, even good reviews note that it can't handle thick fabrics.

Machine repair is a fairly involved task, & a $300 machine may not last as long as a more expensive machine. I sewed home deco for several years on a 1950's singer with only straight stitch until I could afford a new machine, that old machine sewed better than a new singer ever could. If I were buying on a budget today, I'd seriously consider a used Pfaff, Bernina, etc, from a higher end sewing machine dealer. For your 300 bucks you'll be happier in the long run. Now if you aren't sure if you're going to take up sewing a lot, you may want to go with the $80 model & upgrade in a couple years, that way if you don't sew a lot, you haven't put a lot of money into your closet, the graveyard of sewing machines. You'll also appreciate the higher quality when you upgrade.

I agree you don't need lots of stitch functions, straight stitch & zigzag will serve you well. Good luck, & happy sewing!

I have sewn for years and years - first on my Mom's old Singer (straight stitch only); then DH #1 purchased a Montgomery Wards with cams for the decorative stitching (had just given birth to a daughter)in 1960.

Many years later I purchased a $250 Brother - I was NOT sewing denim on it; I ended up spending at least that much for repairs - finally gave it away and purchased a Viking.

You need to realize the less expensive machines WHICH ARE NOT COMPUTERIZED use plastic parts for the working parts (or at least for most of them) which is why the machines won't hold up to working with more than one layer of denim. You "might" be able to sew a patch on denim to cover a hole - I doubt you could do much in the way of making an actual garment, modifying hems, etc.

Save up $3-500 and go to a sewing machine shop (seller, not Walmart). Look at their year end markdowns, trade ins, etc. Right now my dealer has excellent prices on several brands. I am not in the market for a machine upgrade though.

Thanks for your replies, I have since bought pe design 6 on e bay got a really good price, and a Cd with designs on ( i like to jump in at the deep end!) and a really good book which has helped me a lot, just have to work out how to get the designs of the Cd and onto my machine now. The designs are in the pes format, but have only just mastered the basics of pe design so far.

In the past the Designer 1 used floppy disks right on the machine. You don't need a reader/writer. I'm not sure what the newest Designer 1 SE (Simply Excellence) uses. I think the d-cards are just for Designer 2 machines and Platinum Plus machines (Now called Platinum 950E) As far as the cost of the machine. It definately is a quality machine. If you can find a less expensive way to go than the Customizing Plus and reader/writer, I would. The software "Customizing Plus" cost me over $400.00!! I must have been crazy and I don't think I've used it enough yet. I have had my machine almost 3 years. I would like to use my machine more but I don't feel like paying big bucks each time I see a design I like. I've tried a few designs from a free site and they just don't look as crisp and nice as the Viking designs do. Does anyone have a good website for inexpensive designs? I'd also like to become comfortable with purchasing designs online.

Definitely go with a good machine. And like the others have mentioned, find a local reputable dealer. I live in SoCal (I don't know where you are in California) and there's this one dealer in Santa Ana called Wheeler. They were the only ones who were able to deal with my old Riccar (I'd had that machine for 25+ years before finally buying a new machine)Âthey overhauled it, etc. When I went to get a new machine, I went back. They offered all these used, refurbished machines and I knew that anything that was purchased there would come with a good service plan. I bought my New Home machine there and also my serger (speaking of sergersÂI have this great one and have only used it occasionally! Probably didn't need to get one after allÂ). My mom, who lives quite a distance away, got her serger at Wheeler as well (she loved mine). I took lessons on both the new sewing machine as well as the serger. I can go back as often as I need or want for more lessons. My girlfriend loved my machine but didn't want to spend the money so she shopped online. She had nothing but problems and had to send her machine back twice (computerized machines are a bit more sensitiveÂ) So, as far as getting the machine, go with a good dealer. You might get a 'better deal' online but you can't beat the service. And, get the best basic machine you can afford. As far as fabricsÂwhen you get the machine, try out these types of fabrics so you can get a feel for how they sew. My old Riccar was a Stretch machine (specifically designed to sew on stretchy fabrics) so denim and silk were awful to sew on although I did sew these fabrics (despite needle changes and all that). I love my New HomeÂin fact, I just hemmed some new jeans yesterday and was commenting on how wonderful it was that the machine just whipped right through the denim without any hesitation! Bernina 334D Serger

I have a Bernette (Bernina) 334DS. I do enjoy this serger. I enjoy the smaller size of the presser foot (as compared to some), the way it handles and feeds the fabric, and the swing away presser foot. A couple of years before I purchased the 334DS, I had rented a 334D. In my opinion the 334D did a more consistent stitch and would have been better for decorative stitching because of this. When I complained about this, a dealer mentioned that Bernina had changed the design of the tension disks when they brought out the 334DS; from flat to convex. I cannot verify if this is true. Does anyone here know? The only obvious differences between the two models are the exterior color and the easier to thread lower looper on the 334DS. Will your friend let you try threading and adjusting the tensions on her machine before you decide. There is a lot to learn about using a serger, so most likely it will be frustrating at first. If you are comfortable about learning to thread and adjust tensions, I would definitely advise you to purchase it at $150, especially if it is in good shape. I would not consider it out of date. It does everything a standard serger does, as well as 2-thread stitching. There are larger sergers that have a third chain stitch looper which make it possible to offer a straight chain stitch, a 5-thread stitch, and on some machines a cover stitch. What type of sewing do you plan to do? Clothing? Home dec? Decorative? I know it is hard when you haven't used one yet, but can you tell us more about what you are be looking for in a serger? If the tension adjustments and threading are particularly troublesome for you, and you feel you could never get comfortable doing those things, I would recommend that you find a Babylock Imagine. It does not have tensions (it has a fantastic thread delivery system) and it has jet air threading. The Imagine is very easy to use, has a perfect stitch, and is also great for decorative stitching with decorative threads, but you will pay more. The sergers I have are Bernette 334DS, Elna 925DCX and Babylock Evolve.
