I saved $1,000s!

Instead of sending a Holiday card to each person who has posted money-saving ideas that have helped me, I decided to wish you all very happy holidays here on the forum and save 1,000s of dollars in cards and postage. So, have a Merry Christmas and a very happy and frugal New Year!

So in a sense is that article saying this is still somewhat a form of M. elongata? Kind of but.... In a nut shell the article tells us that your plant isn't a Mam. when under the plant ID microscope Meaning. .... it only looked like Elongata to me and as you said it may of been called a Sp.type of Elongata back in the earlier days of cacti naming could be reason why Rose also left a proper ID. The article explains more modern tools where used and who used them to properly ID and classify your named cacti and some others where found to have the same DNA as yours. It also explained the DNA structure of certain plants AND of your plant Sp. In DNA comparison to yours are to different for either M. elongata and yours to both be the same Sp of cacti. It is required to show/ explain the written proof amongst colleges but they dont need to show and tell ALL of us the DNA of any plant. Article also tells us that DNA is different enough to give any plant under the ID microscope warrants a true and then realistically ID or name. Then I go on at babbling about how many cacti get new names so fast it's hard to keep track of them all and they still continue to confuse us as fast as they can... Meaning I cant wait for ALL plants to have bar codding either. Until then.... Rose who still wears the GW cacti and succulent ID crown also shares some brief and IMO good information via another internet forum style webb site. No doubt we love yah at Arid Lands Tony but it is hard to be here and there. Mike M. drops in to say what may of happened to your now properly named cati more clearly.... And then.. just now is when the cat jumps off my lap... Budget or not. Thinks it's fair enough to use/loose a plant or two to let us use our own common scene. Not only would some learn more, they'd also learn it faster .. I'm not at all sure what a commercially massed produced water meter suggestion is for either.

Is my wisteria dead, can I save it, or do I need to start over?

Winter 2013/2014 was a brutal winter for Asian wisterias! Neither my Japanese or Chinese wisteria 'trees' bloomed last spring and the Chinese one, which usually has a smaller secondary summer bloom, produced only a couple of wimpy summer blooms. This winter has also been hard so I fear there may be no bloom this spring either - although it's to soon to tell yet.... Mine are much younger plants that yours. I've never had any dieback of the woody branches like you are describing - I wonder if that is due to the age more than winter kill...? They are known to be able to live for hundreds of years so I think it's likely to be able to survive a reasonable amount of damage! If the graft union a visible bulge? i.e can you tell for sure that some of the new growth came from below the graft? If so, I'd definitely get rid of the stems arising from below the union. The concrete patio would certainly be a limiting factor in trying to get rid of the vine if it is dead. I'd be inclined to wait to see what is alive or clearly dead this spring. Anything clearly dead I'd cut off as low down as possible. Anything living but of dubious origin in relation to the graft, I'd also remove. If that means the vast majority of it is gone, then I'd remove the rest as best I could - and probably replant with something else entirely - one or more of the vigorous and hardy clematis perhaps. If I still wanted a wisteria, I'd plant one (on a very sturdy upright support) as a free-standing tree. It is much easier to prune and control them when they are kept short in a tree form than it is to climb up on a pergola to prune IMO! I'll keep my fingers crossed for the survival of both our wisterias....:-)

Can I save this living room or do I need to return the sofas?

It has taken me awhile to take pictures of my living room since I made some changes. I did return the two sofas (painful—not only did they charge me a $450 shipping charge, they also charged a $250 cleaning fee, as our white dog rubbed against one of the sofas and there were strands of white fur on the back of one. Easily removed with a lint brush, but whatever, lesson learned). We bought two new sofas and had pillows made to coordinate the rest of the room. Took down the valance and made a cornice board as a replacement. Reupholstered the accent chair and bought a new rug. Took apart the entertainment center and painted each piece. Changed the wall color and the artwork. Very pleased with the results. Thanks again everyone for your suggestions!

Great idea! I was going to mail everyone a check for a new car, but in the frugal spirit of the season, I'll forgo the check too! Not only the cars, but think of the check fees saved too! Joyous savings abound!

Reminds me of a card I gave once. It said "This is more than just a birthday card.... It's your PRESENT!"

Hey - that's a good idea!

On the other hand ... now that you have all of that money on hand, lying around unused ...

... how about following the path that I did, several years ago, giving the money saved to several charitable agencies?

No doubt there are several agencies who need such help in your area - abused (mainly women), homeless, unemployed, mentally/physically challenged who can't handle/find work and a number of other agencies serving social needs locally.

And such programs in the wider community - within our land, and abroad. Millions in the world know not where the next meal for them and their kids is coming from ... and have a miserable home (if they are fortunate enough to have one at all). And that's apart from the ones displaced by war, civil unrest, official attempts to push out minorities, climate change, western trade policies that undercut the income of local farmers, artisans, etc.

Better educational and health services for many abroad.

Several agencies that conduct research related to various illnesses and offer information to the public and support to the sufferers.

Universities and other educational institutions.

Mosques, synagogues, churches and other religious agencies - along with encouragement to them to eschew bigotry (especially when disguised).

Many have found that such activities provide a warm feeling in one's heart.

And ... folks making such contributions get a receipt for their donation to a charitable agency ... which in many areas allows one to reduce his/her required payment to the Income Tax People substantially!

So - there's a good possibility that you may turn out not to have lost the full amount that it appeared that you had, in the first place.

I also offer my good wishes to everyone for the holidays.

May you have a blessed Christmas, if that observance is important to you.

May the New Year bring the fulfillment of several of your long cherished, worthwhile dreams ...and the envisioning of some new ones.

... maybe over on the Kitchen Table, this year (it was here and on "Household Finance" sometimes in earlier years - still here, if you know where to look, I think).

It'll disappear from the "Kitchen Table" in about three months.
